Bethesda Game Studio's latest RPG, , carries on the developer's long tradition of highly customizable character creation systems. As one of the main draws of Bethesda games, these systems are all but expected to include detailed face and body sliders, a decent variety of hair, beard, and accessory options, and variable background choices. certainly delivers in this area, and although some complaints have been aired regarding the quality of the character graphics in, there's no doubt that Bethesda has at least allowed players to create the character they really want, even if those characters may not look as stellar as some might hope.

While 's ship-building offers a great avenue for players to express creativity, the builder is missing one crucial feature that would streamline the process, especially when going into New Game Plus. As is an open-world, space-faring RPG, much of the game's traversal relies heavily upon piloting spaceships to visit different planets and other locations. However, while pre-built ships can be bought or provided as rewards for certain quests, also includes a versatile ship-building system that allows players to make unique creations, like iconic ships from other franchises or their own personal designs.

gives players the opportunity to do an overwhelming amount of things, including making the perfect spaceship decked out with all the trappings of those found in some of the most iconic science fiction games, television, and movies. Unfortunately, building the perfect ship doesn’t even matter in the end. It is a shame because it hinders the game’s ability to compete with other media in the genre. What’s more disappointing about this, though, is that it is evidence of how ’s massive scope holds back some of its features from becoming the truly unique things they have the potential to be.

Weapon mods are one of the most fun elements of , and one in particular has a devastating effect that's a joy to unleash. Gunplay in Bethesda games has come a long way since the clunkier implementation of shooting in, with building on the extensive weapon mod system utilized by to enable exciting variety and customization. Many offer generally subtle tweaks, but others transform the game by rethinking the nature of standard firearms altogether in surprising and creative ways.

Bethesda Softworks’ space-faring RPG Starfield continues to set new milestones with its player numbers. In the conference call for Microsoft’s Q1 fiscal year 2024 earnings, CEO Satya Nadella revealed that over 11 million have played the game till now. He also noted that “nearly half of the hours played” have been on PC.

is jam-packed with secret locations for players to find, but the means of discovering them is pretty disappointing. Fast travel is essentially the primary method of transportation to each of the game's central locations, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, it’s the smaller, more hidden locations that suffer. This is a shame because many of these areas have intriguing stories attached to them, but the wind is taken out of the sails a bit because of fast travel.

Since was originally released on September 6, 2023, people who have picked up the game have seriously pushed the limits of the game engine. As with many Bethesda games, the hobby of collecting and storing random items in the game world has been an appreciated staple in iconic Bethesda titles like and the series of games. While in a practical sense, it enables players to interior decorate their homes and ships or store extra items when out of space, in reality, it's often pushed to the limits intentionally, usually to hilarious effect.

There is one mechanic in that is considered broken, but the truth to the fact is that it may simply be misunderstood. The new open-world RPG by Bethesda is set in space, where players can travel across the galaxy and visit several planets while uncovering the mysteries of the universe. While doing so, players can approach the game in whatever manner they prefer. They can, for instance, train to become ace pilots, while their general survivability skills on land are suboptimal. Alternatively, they can become masters of combat with physical builds in , or perhaps become sweet-tongued diplomats capable of talking their way out of danger.

It's hard to say whether one of 's greatest missed opportunities is an oversight or an intentional exclusion. The gamedoes its best to ease players into its lore. They can learn all the basics of the wider galaxy, right up to the nature of the ancient mysteries only solved at the ending of , from the first time they set foot in New Atlantis. However, since most are likely to revisit this major city multiple times across the course of the campaign, players can decide to pace exposition more slowly if they so choose.

In , romance options can sometimes feel pretty slim. After all, while it's more than possible to unlock special missions and quest lines for the romanceable companions, these characters are limited to the four core members of Constellation. This leaves much to be desired regarding connection, as a lack of choice can sometimes feel underwhelming in the expansive space exploration game.

The GSD’s physical and digital sales data for the United Kingdom is now available for September. Bethesda’s Starfield is the second best-selling game of the month, pacing “narrowly” behind launch sales for Forza Horizon 5 (the current fastest-selling first-party Xbox game this generation).

Theoretically, life on some of 's most developed planets should be impossible. Planets in mostly fall into one of two categories: harsh wilderness with a smattering of alien lifeforms, and large central settlements surrounded by more of the same. isn't exactly known for its realism, but it clearly does take many factors into consideration in presenting a variety of different planets. Each of them has its own unique characteristics, extending beyond just flora and fauna, and much of the time these manifest as hazards in gameplay.

One of the best features in Bethesda's latest open-world game, Starfield, is the incredibly robust shipbuilder. One dedicated player decided to blend universes, bringing EVE Online's iconic Rifter into their game.

Throughout different New Game Plus runs, players can encounter different universes that change Constellation in significant ways. These new dimensions mainly change aspects of the characters at The Lodge, completely changing the story narrative, and sometimes in a very peculiar manner. Though it's necessary to complete the game to unlock these hidden universes, some online have figured out a way to view them all, which has enabled people to see the different variations of the world that can be unlocked upon the start of New Game Plus in .

If there’s one thing missing from Starfield that cranked up the immersion in previous Bethesda games, it’s probably the radio stations. Walking through the post-apocalyptic landscape in Fallout 4 surrounded by Death Claws and Super Mutants while blasting Big Band music on your Pip-Boy really elevated the gameplay experience for many. Unfortunately, Starfield came without a galaxy-wide space radio, to the disappointment of numerous fans who have been asking where Starfield’s radio is in multiple forums since its release. Many players were expecting it to be a given, but one player put matters into his own hands and created an all-around Starfield space radio that anyone can play for free while soaring the Great Unknown.

Circana’s September 2023 video game sales charts for the United States are now available, and Bethesda’s Starfield is on top. It was the best-selling game of the month and the seventh best-selling game of the year to date. The sci-fi RPG was also the best-selling game across Xbox and PC, with the majority of sales on the latter.

It's pretty noticeable when walking around any of 's major cities: players may hear chatter in a wide variety of global languages, coming from diverse groups of NPCs. In 's faction questlines, women and people of color frequently appear in positions of power.

Pete Hines isn’t the only major departure from Bethesda Softworks. Will Shen, lead quest designer and design director on Starfield, has also announced that he’s leaving the studio. He’ll join Something Weird Games, a studio of former talent from BioWare, Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment, to work on Wyrdsong, their debut RPG.

There's a personality problem among 's aliens, but a few of them try to make up the deficit. As a matter of fact, much of the game suffers from a pervasive sense of blandness. 's cities are pret barren, its space exploration somewhat pointless, and its NPCs just a little bit dead around the eyes. These issues extend to its many alien species too, which, despite existing on thousands of far-flung planets each light years away from their closest neighbors, all fall into a couple of dull, archetypal categories.

When launched back in September 2023, there were several different versions available for purchase. The standard edition was available on day one via the Xbox and PC Game Pass subscriptions, while other special editions and upgrades came with bonus content and early access to the game when pre-ordered.

From the ship-builder to the various homes that can be purchased in the Settled Systems, has many customization options to help immerse the player into the universe Bethesda has crafted. Unfortunately, the game is still not without its bugs, and some of these can cause a complete lack of immersion and some pretty serious frustration, especially when it comes to home decorating. While many will just utilize Outposts or their ships as their main home, others will painstakingly take hours to craft the intricate interior designs that rival even the most skilled decorators on HGTV.

is incredibly immersive, and its sheer size is almost mind-boggling, but there are still some aspects to its game world that don't make any sense. Bethesda Game Studios' interstellar RPG is incredibly ambitious, but it still builds upon a foundation established by 2006's. Nearly everything in can be interacted with, and hundreds of NPCs can be engaged in conversation. The game's breadth leads to a number of things that aren't quite as they should be, but other nonsensical features are symptoms of game design, world-building, or just incorrect science.

The universe that takes place in presents opportunities for players to immerse themselves in space travel and exploration, but DLC has the chance to rectify some of the game's more tedious aspects. There are engaging features such as random encounters with other spaceships, quests both for the main storyline or optional side missions that provide lore in addition to rewards, and plenty of NPC relationships to form. All of these blend together to create an exciting and immersive game, set against the massive backdrop of space with planets to explore and ships to customize.

Navigation in 's Starmap can be frustrating. Even for those who have invested hundreds of hours into the game, the base game for lacks proper labeling, which can make space navigation difficult. While astrological accuracy is undoubtedly something the game has achieved by correctly naming solar systems and planets after natural systems in the known galaxy, not everyone is an astronomer. This lack of decent labeling can make navigating to even the most well-known locations a hassle without the aid of auto-navigation on the mission screen.

Heavy weapons are one of ’s most deadly guns. They either fire single, precise, deadly shots or spray a barrage of bullets. However, they tend to weigh more and have drawbacks, like longer reload times or more expensive ammunition.

is full of secrets across its vast galaxy, with several bases and planets housing a plethora of resources. These range from organic materials sourced from alien fauna and flora, to inorganic components which can be extracted through mining, or items such as spacesuits, weapons, and food. Not all items are considered legal, however, with stolen goods being flagged, and some items marked as Contraband, such as harvested organs, mech components, Va'Ruun Heretic writings, and more are deemed illegal regardless of how they've been acquired.

Within the vast magnitude of space exploration in there are over 1,000 planets to discover and explore in a large open-world, or open-galaxy, adventure. Across the star systems, there are surprisingly few cities where groups of people have congregated, and much of civilization seems to have taken a bit of a step backward in some ways. Even the lack of good maps for the four major cities is a frustrating disappointment that can leave some wondering what happened to humanity's current reliance on navigation software and map programs, but even that is just a small part of a larger problem.

Like many previous Bethesda games, features a vast number of hidden details, secrets, and Easter eggs — it is not surprising that in a game with over 1000 planets and 100 star systems, although some are reasonably easy to locate or experience, others are exponentially harder to discover. These Easter eggs are, for the most part, wonderful references to pop culture, astronomy, history, and other Bethesda IPs; though being aware of one of the game's many references is rewarding, having to hunt for them and spend a great deal of time and effort in locating them only amplifies the reward.

One of the undeniable highlights of Bethesda's latest release, , is the incredible battles that take place on board a spacecraft while traversing through the vast reaches of space. Although these space battles are not uncommon, and the enemies the Spacefarer will face are at most only slightly challenging, there are some rare ships cruising in space that pose an enormous threat — if the player is unfortunate enough to encounter them. The most dangerous enemy ships are undoubtedly the three legendary ones, and although they are difficult to locate these incredibly powerful battleships are an ever-present threat; however, they are not equally deadly, some are far more dangerous than others.

As is often the case with role-playing games, grants players a variety of ways to play to create a more unique, tailor-made experience for each individual. Players can choose between dialogue options that can be diplomatic or confrontational, and combining this with other actions they make throughout the campaign can lead to great rewards or devastating consequences. However, one thing 's developers seem to want to prevent is playing the game as a bad guy.

Starfield players are reporting that the special game-themed watches that were included as part of the game’s collector’s edition have begun breaking down. Several players have taken to the game’s subReddit to complain about the quality of the watches.

While Starfield was released to a lot of expectations, it is safe to say that, contrary to some beliefs, it didn’t launch completely broken with game-breaking or even hilarious glitches. Personally, my experience was flawless once I installed it on my PC. However, stability and performance, as well as some quest glitches have needed some extra work. While some have deep and emotional storylines, others have funny personalities or are cool to have around. However, outside the core four Constellation members of Sam Coe, Sarah Morgan, Barrett, and Andreja, the game's other potential ship crew candidates don't get the love they deserve. So far, space adventurers have found a total of 27 different recruitable companions in .

It’s easy to get lost in the massive world of , but there are some important locations every player should know. Discovery is a significant aspect of the gameplay loop, which leads to some excellent moments. However, this means that some may not find particular locations that could have been of great value at an earlier point in their playthrough. It can also be overwhelming to keep track of the enormous number of points of interest in the game, which is further complicated by the lack of a legend and filter tool on the star map.

Starfield might be Bethesda’s most stable game to date, but that doesn’t mean that it’s completely free of any and all technical issues. Players have been encountering some nasty bugs in certain quests alongside performance issues, but thankfully the latest update is here to iron out those problems.

In , players will spend time with several members of Constellation — the society of spacefaring explorers — but one member stands out for all the wrong reasons, thanks to terrible parenting skills, which are possibly the worst in the multiverse. The cowboy hat-wearing Sam Coe is one of the most distinct companions in, thanks in part to his anachronistic appearance but more so due to his daughter, Cora Coe. Cora is the archetypal precocious youth, a 12-year-old girl with knowledge well beyond her years. Sam repeatedly endangers Cora throughout ’s story, making him an unfit parent, before committing the most profound act of child abandonment possible.

has an expansive universe filled with stories of intrigue and mystery with a ton of twists and unexpected plot points. While some of these hidden pieces of the lore are rather innocuous, others are huge and have major implications not only on the narrative of, but can also impact in-game aspects of the title. With all the varying factions, characters, and locations, it can be easy to get overly invested in side missions or Activities and miss out on some of the game's bigger plot twists and spoilers.

features some of the best faction questlines Bethesda has ever created, but some are better than others. Each questline has a distinct feel, creating a refreshing sense of variety from the main story as well as each other. They also have a lot of freedom, allowing players to role-play various characters within a somewhat fixed mission structure. However, some of ’s faction quests fall short of what the others deliver, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Yet, it’s clear that some questlines are far more engaging to play.

is the highly-anticipated DLC for the recently released Bethesda title. While 's 1000 planets already have a ton of content that most players have likely not explored fully, a DLC follow-up opens the door to many new possibilities in the game. A new DLC with expanded content will not only give veteran players who have completed the game something new to do, but it may even be enough to attract new players to the title.

A core component of Bethesda's latest RPG, , is the ability to create unique and powerful spacecraft. These custom ships are constructed of various parts that can be purchased, found, or gifted as a reward for completing missions. Though there are countless customization options, some parts are significantly better, rarer, and more expensive than others. Divided into three classes, the ultimate ship parts all come from the top tier of ship-building components, the C class.

Because there is no level cap in , making your character as OP as possible is merely a matter of maxing out all 82 skills. That being said, it will be long before you can reach that stature. Furthermore, there is an argument to be made about your background, traits, weapons, and armor, all of which play a role in making your character as OP as possible.

Using ’s best Physical skill builds can be an easy way of powering through opponents and getting through the game without major inconveniences – all while not excluding the challenge factor that outer space involves. Such builds are centered on grounded exploration and combat rather than using your spaceship and usually focus on survivability, combat power, and even stealth prowess. As is quite an open-ended RPG when it comes to skill trees, you can mix and match abilities to round out the perfect build. In fact, you are incentivized to do so, as most of the best Physical builds in the game stem from such combinations.

Some of 's many quests are exceptional, some are pretty terrible, but a number are notable for being particularly obscure, hard to find, or difficult to trigger. These little-known quests are of fluctuating quality, but some bring with them great rewards and entertaining experiences.

The Crimson fleet is one of the many factions in . They are a criminal organization operating out of the Kryx system. Joining them will require breaking the law, stealing, and other dubious actions.

Released last month, Starfield is the biggest game Bethesda Softworks ever made, featuring 120 star systems and almost 1,700 planets. While it was only a matter of time before someone explored them all, one ambitious Starfield player had already scanned all 1,695 worlds.

features a nearly endless supply of quests. Some are great, some should be avoided, and some are so challenging that even the most hardened veteran of intergalactic exploration will struggle to survive and succeed. These quests are made obnoxiously difficult by a number of factors — powerful bosses, seemingly continuous onslaughts of enemies, or simply challenging requirements. Although some of the hardest quests, missions, and activities in can be skipped, others must be overcome to complete the main story.

A key gameplay mechanic in is the customization of attributes and abilities, but as the player progresses through the game, they will be able to unlock a number of interesting powers for their character which can dramatically alter play style. There is a total of 24 Starborn Powers available in; although some are, for all intents and purposes, useless, there are some Starborn Powers that are game-changing and can completely revolutionize combat, enhance exploration, and expedite the process of resource collecting.

Arguably, the most important part of any ship's design in is the Reactor, with the best ones granting a balanced spread of power to all of a vessel's systems. Various important pieces are available for the three different ship classes you might obtain during your adventures. Ranging from your crew size to your ship's overall defenses, your Reactor could determine success or failure in the deeper regions of space.

has a ton of main faction quests, sidequests, and activities players can partake in over the game's 1,000-planet universe. While many of these will be clearly detailed in the mission log, others happen somewhat randomly in the game. One of the main places these random interactions occur is while in space. However, these scenarios are easy to miss, especially for those not accepting incoming transmissions. While some are rather innocuous jokes — like a ship that repeatedly requests whether the protagonist wants to extend the ship's warranty — others have a little more substance and even side missions associated with them.

The famous spot where Neil Armstrong took a small step for humankind at the original Moon Landing is a location your character can find in 's expansive map. A reward for your exploration makes this spot worth visiting, not just for the moment that made many dreams of becoming astronauts. A simple side mission that gives reverence to the past, it can be tricky to actually find the reason to travel to the moon of humanity's old home.

On paper the storyline of is the most compelling of any Bethesda RPG to date, but the game’s evident fear of any linear elements hurts the presentation, limiting players’ emotional investment. With any form of fiction, there is a difference between story and storytelling. The plot of is an ambitious space opera, full of twists and turns and emotional moments. Those narrative beats fail to land as well as they should, since eschews cinematic presentation to maintain player freedom. It contains a good story that is told poorly, leaving with wasted potential, which could have been improved on if the game had been more linear.

Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield launched last month and received praise from critics (check out our review) and players. However, with more than 1000 planets, extensive ship-building and several activities, the space-faring RPG’s journey is only beginning.

You may not have a billion dollars to work with in , but thanks to the games' shipbuilder which supports a myriad of custom-inspired designs, you can create and fly around in the Batwing for a reasonable sum of credits. Dark as the voyages of space itself, the Batwing is fast and strikes fear into the hearts of space pirates who don't know who they're dealing with. As a result, you'll either die a hero in the Batwing or fly it long enough to see yourself become the villain.

With most video games, a New Game Plus simply lets players spend more time with a game they enjoy, though it lacks story-based rationalization, but structured its entire main plot around making New Game Plus a part of its story. Most titles take the route of with a New Game Plus, where it might offer players a special weapon or ability, or a harder difficulty mode appropriate to higher level characters. Other titles have used the feature to provide alternate endings and additional story content, but few games have made it the centerpiece of the plot like .

Weapon mods are a great way to customize gear in . These can improve damage, higher accuracy, faster reloading, or other secondary effects. Mods belong to specific categories, like magazines, barrels, or grips, and cannot be doubled up.

, like other Bethesda games, features several customizable attributes and abilities. As one progresses through the expansive universe and campaign of, they will quickly realize that there are a number of powers their character can unlock. In total, there are 24 Starborn powers available in, and although some are game-changing and can enhance the experience of combat, exploration, and resource collecting, other powers are absolutely pointless and an enormous waste of time and effort to obtain.

While many quests in present choices, it can sometimes be hard to tell what the consequences of said choices will be, which is the case in deciding Marco Graziani's fate in "." This can be especially true of long-running quest chains, such as faction questlines, where a sequence of quests form a continuous story, and decisions made in earlier quests may come back to affect later ones, in some cases having the potential for interesting and unforeseen consequences. Other aspects of quests, such as the rewards gained from certain decisions, or companion approval/disapproval of certain choices, can also influence which options are best for a given playthrough of the game.

is full of many sci-fi elements, from blasting across star systems in seconds to unlocking gravity and time-bending powers. One thing the game doesn't let players do as much — a staple in other futuristic sci-fi games such as — is augment their character with cyberware to make themselves an android. However, there is one particular questline that comes close to achieving this.

While the political underpinnings of could be better at feeling interconnected at times, some key decisions actually matter in terms of gameplay and the story narrative. However, in a sea of decisions, quests, and activities, it can be hard to know what actually matters and what doesn't. After all, it's more than possible to join all the different factions in , even though, from a narrative point of view, they don't get along. That being said, there are some key points in the game and a few decisions that will have a lasting impact on a save file.

gives players the opportunity to decide the fate of Tomisar, a House Va'ruun higher-up, at the end of the side quest "." House Va'ruun is one of three playable religions in, which players can pick from when they begin a new game. Each one has its ups and downs, benefits and detriments, but whichever one a player picks, they're pretty much stuck with it. Unlike many of the other factions in the game, there's no official quest to join any of the religions. Players mostly brush up against them as part of side quests that involve their claimed territories or sworn members, in this case, Andreja.

Bethesda's CEO, Todd Howard has addressed some of the cut content in . The space ARPG was already an ambitious title, with a vast galaxy of over 100 planetary systems, and over 1000 planets — both handcrafted and procedurally generated — to explore, but Howard's recent comments suggested that exploring them could have been a more challenging task for players with resource management being more at the forefront of the game in its earlier stages of development.

Outposts are a large but optional part of Starfield, but they can provide a steady stream of resources as well as a nice base of operations among the stars.

Ship Parts serve as a healing item for your ship in Starfield, but they can be quite scarce early on.

Although many of the quests in present players with choices and split-path options for approaching certain problems, some options may only be available if other quests or tasks have been completed beforehand. In a game as massive as, it can be especially difficult to know when you might be missing options or when the effects of some decisions may have effects down the line on later quests. While most missions are standalone or explicitly part of a chain, joining certain factions or having certain traits can open up more possible options, like in the semi-randomly encountered «Juno's Gambit» mission.

Because of the extensive ship design system in , it was without question that players would try to recreate ships from other sci-fi games, such as and its iconic ship, The Normandy. However, replicating that ship is a massive undertaking that will require significant time and credits before you see yourself in the cockpit.

has a variety of side quests that provide you with every choice you could think of, but few are as tense as the ones seen in a mission where your decisions could lead to grave outcomes. You might find this mission early in your journey, with a series of objectives that test your character's morality. Different rewards are offered depending on how you handle the delicate situation in this quest.

Just today, Bethesda put out the newest patch, titled the 1.7.33 update, for Starfield on both Xbox platforms and Steam. According to a post on the official Starfield website, the patch “addresses some issues with performance and stability as well as a few general gameplay issues.” The post also notes that the developers still plan on releasing a more significant update sometime in the future. But until then, here is a basic rundown of the fixes implemented in the latest Starfield update.

's dual Crimson Fleet and United Colonies quest line comes down to one crucial moment, where the player may choose either to kill or persuade the pirate leader Delgado. As the captain of the Crimson Fleet, Delgado has been the player character's first point of contact with the pirate legion since the very beginning of their business relationship. This is intertwined with another faction quest line: that of the United Colonies.
