Weapon mods are one of the most fun elements of , and one in particular has a devastating effect that's a joy to unleash. Gunplay in Bethesda games has come a long way since the clunkier implementation of shooting in, with building on the extensive weapon mod system utilized by to enable exciting variety and customization. Many offer generally subtle tweaks, but others transform the game by rethinking the nature of standard firearms altogether in surprising and creative ways.
Weapon mods come in a number of categories, each corresponding to a different modular part of a firearm. This completely rethinks possibilities in combat, as aiming above the heads of enemies can work just as well as hitting them dead-on. Its power really starts to show when used over a wide target area, as firing high enough can spread the damage out much further than anything that would typically come out of the barrel of a handheld weapon. Getting used to its possibilities can require some recalibration, but it doesn't take long for the Hornet Nest mod to make standard guns feel boring by comparison.

Of course, applying the Hornet Nest mod to a gun in will first require some prerequisites. It only works on the Bridger, Negotiator, and Coachman, with the first two being heavy weapons and the latter a shotgun. 3 tetrafluoride, 3 adhesive, and 3 lead are the required components for crafting, all of which can either be purchased or acquired via mining or from a vendor. Level 3 research on Magazine and Battery Mods is also a must, as the Hornet Nest mod is hardly an introductory one. Nonetheless, the upgrade path is well worth it, and it unlocks some other fun ammo mods along the way.

The Hornet Nest is far from the only powerful weapon mod in, but it does have an unusually high ceiling for powerful efficacy when utilized well.
