A key gameplay mechanic in is the customization of attributes and abilities, but as the player progresses through the game, they will be able to unlock a number of interesting powers for their character which can dramatically alter play style. There is a total of 24 Starborn Powers available in; although some are, for all intents and purposes, useless, there are some Starborn Powers that are game-changing and can completely revolutionize combat, enhance exploration, and expedite the process of resource collecting.
Following the completion of the mission "," a repeatable quest that can be largely avoided, characters can unlock the game-changing Starborn Powers. Reminiscent of the Dragon Shouts in, the 24 Starborn Powers are all unique and some are far superior to others. Also like the gameplay mechanic in , the use of 's Starborn Powers is restricted by a cooldown meter — consequently, it is vital to skillfully pick which of the 24 Powers should be applied in any given situation. Some have a wide spread of potential uses, while other powers are pretty much useless in any scenario.

The first Starborn Power acquired during a playthrough, Anti-Gravity Field, is one of the best in the game. Tied to the main quest line, obtaining Anti-Gravity Field is unavoidable; however, this is a blessing. The power disables the gravity in a small area around the Spacefarer, which in turn paralyzes all nearby enemies. Although at 45 Power it is rather expensive, it can provide an invaluable break in combat giving the player time to escape or attack without the fear of retaliation.
Phased Time, while one of the best Starborn Powers in, is also one of the coolest. It allows the player to slow down time while maintaining their own full speed — in a manner reminiscent of Quicksilver or the Flash. Although the ability to dodge bullets and the advantage of attacking enemies at comparative hyper speed is incredibly useful in combat, the concept and the visual are exceptionally cool. Unfortunately, Phased Time can only be obtained and upgraded at the very end of a playthrough following the completion of "" in the game’s main story.
Solar Flare allows the player to emit a burst of solar energy which damages enemies, with the added bonus of occasionally setting them ablaze — in turn causing more damage. This intense and luminous burst of solar energy is visually impressive and an efficient way to combat small groups of enemies. Moreover, its use only costs 25 Power, so its use is relatively affordable when compared with other similar Starborn Powers.
The Starborn Power Particle Beam is undoubtedly one of the best in. Dealing out extraordinary damage to enemies, the power allows the
