Sony has updated the Last Chance to Play section of its PlayStation Plus service, revealing several PS5 and PS4 titles leaving the subscription service, including many titles. This is not unheard of with subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, but this clear-out does seem to be larger than most, with 25 titles being removed.

Subscribers to the Extra tier of the PlayStation Plus subscription service should note that seven Final Fantasy games are set to leave the lineup on May 21, with 18 other titles getting the boot as well. Those who are signed up to the Essential tier of PlayStation Plus can keep those games forever as long as they stay subscribed, but the games that make up the Extra and Premium tiers are available on a rotating basis.

Freed from the dystopian metropolis of Midgar, is shaping up to be an enormous game. Slated to be the second part of Square Enix's trilogy re-imagining the seminal from 1997, recently got a release date in February 2024, and had the opportunity to play two separate demos for the highly anticipated RPG. Although the full breadth of 's systems remains unclear, even these short glimpses show that it will build on its predecessor in nearly every conceivable way.

A recent report by Bloomberg detailed some soul-searching and scapegoating at Square Enix after a drop in its share price and the perceived underperformance of Final Fantasy 16. Sources criticized disorganized management in a landscape of unruly “fiefdoms” led by single, powerful producers. That may be true, and I wouldn’t want to underplay the frustrations of developers working under those conditions. But there’s also something to be said for letting enormously experienced, creative, big personalities run things how they please (within reason). What they make may not hang together perfectly, but it never feels designed by committee. It feels bespoke, obsessive, extravagant, and weird.
