Ever since was released, Aerith's reference to the "" has been revered for its emotional impact, calling back to an early interaction she has with protagonist Cloud Strife. The line itself is a reference to the "" that sits above the lower levels of the city of Midgar, one of the game's most notable locations. Diehard fans of the beloved RPG are hoping that will reveal the reason for the change.

Several characters survive key events in the new iteration of the story while some that die are resurrected by spirits simply known as Whispers. Despite these significant changes to the story, 's reviews were solid.
