It's me, I'm back. Rock Paper Shotgun's dedicated Cyberpunk 2077 reporter. CD Projekt Red continue to pay my rent by releasing regular patches for the once-borked, now-brill open world so I can write news about them. The latest, Update 2.1, is out now and adds new races, car chases, romantic smooches, and a working metro system.

The Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077 is available today on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. However, those who own the game can download Update 2.1 for free. It’s live now, according to CD Projekt RED on Twitter.

In addition to Update 2.1 going live for all players, Cyberpunk 2077’s Ultimate Edition is out on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It’s the definitive edition and includes the base game, Phantom Liberty expansion, all updates released thus far (including Update 2.1) and digital goodies from the “My Rewards” program for $59.99.

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting the last major update before developer CD Projekt Red moves on to the next project. Dubbed ‘Update 2.1,' the patch finally brings the long-requested metro system, the ability to hang out with romantic partners, radios, and a ton of quality-of-life changes. It drops alongside the Ultimate Edition on December 5 at 4:30pm IST in India/ 12pm CET in Europe. Bear in mind that this is a free downloadable update, so it won't be included natively in the physical disc versions releasing on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. That said, the 2.0 Update released in September will be included across all versions, entirely overhauling the perk system and adding a range of tech augmentations, which weren't present in the original 2020 version.

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally getting the feature I most crave from every open world game: public transport. Update 2.1, due for release next week, is adding a fully-functioning metro system of the sort seen in Cyberpunk 2077's 2018 cinematic trailer - as well as new hangouts with your romantic pals, repeatable car races, and new accessibility settings.

Cast your mind back to Cyberpunk 2077's E3 2018 trailer and you might remember Night City's metro system playing a prominent role — which was why its absence as a fully functional transportation service was so notable come the game's beleagured release in December 2020. Three years later though, CD Projekt has announced it's restoring the long-missing rideable metro system in a surprise 2.1 update arriving next Tuesday, 5th December.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition launches next week and includes the base game, Phantom Liberty and all updates till now. While CD Projekt RED has made several long-requested additions to the game, from vehicular combat to police chases, it didn’t add the metro system for fast travel that the cinematic trailer promised. That’s changing with update 2.1.

CD Projekt RED unveiled Update 2.1 for Cyberpunk 2077 recently, confirming the metro system for fast travel. That’s not all, as various accessibility features are also coming. You can find them in a separate Accessibility tab and are in addition to options added in Update 2.02.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.1 is set to expand the experience with improvements to boss fights, new vehicles, a slate of new accessibility features, and much more to  improve your experience. 

With the bulk of CD Projekt RED’s work on Cyberpunk 2077 having wrapped up (upcoming updates notwithstanding), The Witcher 4 is the next game that the developer will be focusing on, with nearly half the studio now working on the next instalment in the fantasy RPG series. And according to game director Sebastian Kalemba, the game will serve as “an excellent entry point” for newcomers.

The release of: Ultimate Edition next week will also see a new 2.1 update that will bring ”New and hotly-anticipated gameplay elements” for the great price of free, according to developer CD Projekt Red.

Cyberpunk 2077’s development team is ready to move on to its sequel, Project Polaris, with the first game supposedly having received its final major updates in the form of Update 2.0 and the expansion Phantom Liberty, though it seems CD Projekt RED still has some final flourishes to add to the resurgent action RPG.

CD Projekt has made it abundantly clear that it plans to expand the Cyberpunk franchise in more ways than one, and while that does obviously include Project Orion – Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, which is currently in the conceptual design stage of development – the company also has additional transmedia projects planned.

A new earnings report by CD Projekt RED indicates that almost half of the entire studio is working on the company’s next game—The Witcher 4. The game, currently under development with the codename Polaris, has almost 330 developers working on it as of October 31.

Cyberpunk 2077 has several endings and the recent Phantom Liberty expansion added more. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that none of these endings are uncomplicated.

The Xbox package will come with three discs comprising all content, whereas the PS5 version will include a disc for the base version with the v2.0 overhaul and a voucher for the expansion to be downloaded from the PlayStation store. Meanwhile, the PC version serves a redeemable code on the GOG platform — no discs at all — CD Projekt Red's own gaming client, which ensures it keeps the full cut from the purchase.

Big-name Hollywood actors playing important roles in games has become an increasingly common occurrence over the years, and CD Projekt RED has been one of the studios at the forefront of that, with Keanu Reeves starring in Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion Phantom Liberty, and Idris Elba in the latter. So is that something that we can expect to see more of from the Polish company in the future, especially with the inevitable Cyberpunk 2?

Both in and out of games (more so the former), Cyberpunk as an IP has always been intrinsically linked to Night City, a futuristic uber-capitalistic fictional city that has frequently served as the central setting for Cyberpunk stories. The Witcher 3 team has announced a PC mod editor is in the works for Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt have announced that they're working on a free mod editor for The Witcher 3, allowing you to write entire new quests for grizzly Geralt, or just make him walk around with no trousers on, which he spends every other cutscene doing anyway. There are already many mods for the venerable fantasy RPG, of course - the options range from mods that give you Henry Cavill's face to mods that simulate the effects of long Covid to raise awareness - but the editor should make life easier for the internet's Geralt-whisperers. Better late than never.

If a game has the option of equipping a pistol, then I’ll use it. I pretty much completed all of the Uncharted games with the pistol alone. I love their speed, versatility, headshot damage, and abundance of ammo in almost every game. The pistols and revolvers are no different in Cyberpunk 2077 and are some of the best weapons, in my opinion.

In a tweet, lead scene programmer Filip Pierściński claimed that both the game's paid expansion and the version 2.0 update will be heavy on CPU usage, essentially squeezing every bit of performance out of the chip. As such, a 90 percent workload on an 8-core processor is easily expected, which could lead to thermal throttling. It's unclear as to what aspect of the update is making the game so CPU-demanding, but past patches heavily focused on ray-tracing features.

PC players looking to max out the settings on may need to upgrade their machine before the long-awaited expansion pack releases according to one CD Projekt Red developer.
