A new rumor suggests that the next Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo fighter will be an alternate-timeline version of Scorpion, with Harumi Hasashi donning the iconic yellow ninja mask instead of her husband Hanzo. One of the biggest additions to come from Moral Kombat 1 is the Kameo system, which allows players to select a supporting character from a separate roster to assist in matches. Most of these secondary combatants are classic versions of existingcharacters from the original timeline, which Fire God Liu Kang rebooted at the end of Mortal Kombat 11.

I've loved the recent Mortal Kombat games, but if there's one thing they have not been good at, it's celebrity cameos. From Ronda Rousey as Sonya, to the Dimitri Vegas skin for Sub-Zero, to most recently Megan Fox as Nitara, more often than not the appearance of a famous face in these games means that you're about to be subjected to voice-acting more grisly than the fatalities. So I'm frankly a little horrified to find out that Ed Boon's dream for Mortal Kombat 1 was for all the fighters to be played by different household names.

Mortal Kombat 1 features two huge actors, with Megan Fox playing Nitara, and Jean-Claude Van Damme available as an alternate skin and voice pack for Johnny Cage. However, Ed Boon didn't want to stop there, at one point envisioning a Mortal Kombat 1 cast where every single fighter was played by a big-name celebrity.

While I've never been sold on Mortal Kombat's theatrical violence and roster design, I've gotta say that Mortal Kombat 1 is rather beautiful. Well, on PC at least. It looks pretty damn good on PlayStation and Xbox, too. Nintendo Switch, however? It, uh, looks like a game alright. If games were total and utter nightmare fuel.

However, as NetherRealm has proven in the past, they won’t let things stay as they are via one DLC pack. Whether for their main franchise or DC Comics crossover, they do multiple DLC packs to bring in every character possible to flesh out the roster.

Six hours into my time with Mortal Kombat 1, I’ve barely scratched the surface — I haven’t battled against a human opponent yet, and I’ve only seen a fraction of its ambitious story mode. But it’s the new Invasions mode that’s stealing most of my time right now, and potentially making me miss my deadline for pre-launch impressions of NetherRealm’s new fighting game.

It's pretty much expected nowadays for the majority of the big fighting games to have some kind of cross-play support, what with them being primarily multiplayer focused experiences. Street Fighter 6 had crossplay at launch, as will Tekken 8 when that releases next year, but it seems like Mortal Kombat 1 fans will have to wait a little bit before they can go a few rounds with someone on a different platform.

In many ways, Mortal Kombat owes its existence to Jean-Claude Van Damme, with Midway Games originally having set out to make a fighting game based on the famous action actor three decades ago, before pivoting to turning it into the series we all know and love. When Mortal Kombat 1 was announced in May, one of the first (and most fascinating) details revealed about the game was its inclusion of actor/martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme making an appearance as Johnny Cage. Like in every fighting game, mirror matches have always been possible in Mortal Kombat. This got a little more complicated in Mortal Kombat X though, as all characters had unique pre-fight banter with each other. This meant that the writers had to come up with semi-logical reasons for each character to be beating themselves up, whether they be evil clones or versions of themself from a different timeline.

There once was a time when it would’ve been impossible to have crossovers within the video game space outside of publishers using their own characters in the titles they made. Nintendo is legendary for doing that even before a certain fighting game franchise was born. However, nowadays, the real question with crossovers isn’t “Can you get them?” it’s instead, “How many can you get?” Mortal Kombat, over the last several entries, has had numerous DLC characters that have blown people’s minds, and the upcoming DLC characters, like Homelander, Omni-Man, and Peacemaker, further add to the belief that anything is possible.

The news that Homelander and Omni-Man would both be in Mortal Kombat 1 sparked a lot of excitement from fans. There's just one problem... they're both kind of similar, right?

Mortal Kombat 1 has just given us our first look at Sindel during Gamescom Opening Night Live, as well as gameplay featuring Shao Kahn. The two will be joining the main fighter's roster.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon showed up to Gamescom’s Opening Night Live stream on Tuesday and brought what Boon described as the “craziest trailer of all” from Mortal Kombat 1. That could be considered an exaggeration, right up until Sindel — a newly confirmed fighter — nearly rips off Raiden’s legs like he’s a rotisserie chicken and yanks General Shao’s skull and spine clean out of his torso.

The Mortal Kombat 1 pre-order beta went live for Xbox and PS5 players on Friday, bringing with it multiple new characters for players to try as well as some returning stalwarts. The most popular of them so far seems to be Johnny Cage, who is winning over fans with big celebrity energy, big combos, and surprise sunglasses finishers.

Those who pre-ordered NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 1 can look forward to the upcoming beta this weekend. It runs from August 18th to August 21st for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (not for PC or Nintendo Switch). A new trailer is available, showcasing some of the content players can look forward to.
