It’s no secret Mortal Kombat‘s Johnny Cage was based on action legend Jean-Claude Van Damme. The franchise would have looked mighty different had Midway managed to cut a deal to use JCVD’s likeness in the video game and make him the central piece of Van Damme; however, this never happened, and the Muscles from Brussels actually jumped over to the world of Street Fighter a few years later.
Jean-Claude Van Damme Was Nearly Johnny Cage In Mortal Kombat
Now, the journey comes full circle as Mortal Kombat 1 features an official Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny Cage, which also boasts the actor’s voice as he recorded a few lines for Cage’s interactions with foes. In typical Cage fashion, though, there is a cockiness to his quips, and it is dished out in Van Damme’s inimitable delivery. At the same time, Van Damme seems to pick his favourite between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter once and for all with a killer line.
In 1994, director Steven E. de Souza landed a major coup by securing Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel William Guile in the Street Fighter live-action film. Not only did this movie feature Raul Julia as the indomitable M. Bison, but the inclusion of JCVD also added serious action legitimacy to the cast. The film wasn’t universally well received upon arrival, but it built up a cult following in the years since its release.
Landing Van Damme wasn’t as difficult as some might have imagined as de Souza revealed to A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane. The filmmaker explained how Capcom demanded a well-known action name for the movie and the parties started throwing around possibilities within the budget.
“Originally, they said, ‘Can you get Stallone? Can you get Schwarzenegger?’ And we just said, ‘You can’t afford them,'” de Souza said. “They had a budget of $30 million – we ended up going a little bit over; [we] couldn’t afford those guys. So, by process of elimination, they finally said, ‘What about Jean-Claude Van Damme?'” Since he wouldn’t need to present for the entire shoot, de Souza made it work. Reportedly, Van Damme’s name was also a consideration for the part of Johnny Cage in 1995’s Mortal Kombat movie, but he had committed to Street Fighter already.
Why Didn’t Mortal Kombat 2 Cast Jean-Claude Van Damme?
Despite Mortal Kombat 2 not casting Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage, the actor finally received the opportunity to play the Hollywood star in Mortal Kombat 1. For ages, he has welcomed the chance to take a shot at the part, and he finally does it in the latest video game. Players can choose JCVD’s likeness – in all his ’80s Bloodsport glory – and see him take down his opponents while dropping savage one-liners.
One of his best lines from the trailer is: “It will be great. I’ll play a

The co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series and director of Mortal Kombat 1, Ed Boon, has revealed that it was a consideration during the most recent game’s development to have every single character played by a recognizable actor.
Mortal Kombat 1 is upon us, and the iconic fighting game series comes full circle and restarts the timeline, adjusting what we knew about all of the Mortal Kombat 1 characters. While we rethink what we knew about the series with Mortal Kombat 1, co-creator and director Ed Boon has talked about the reboot in the context of both Tekken and Street Fighter’s return, and how he felt when Jean-Claude Van Damme went to do the latter’s less-than-favorable ‘90s movie instead of his own videogame.
Learning who the guest fighters are going to be in the next Mortal Kombat game has become as big a part of the build-up to its release as the reveal of the base roster. Among the guest stars in Mortal Kombat 1 are John Cena's Peacemaker, Invincible's Omni-Man, and Homelander from The Boys. Despite the superhero/supervillain theme when it comes to the new Mortal Kombat game's guests, Ed Boon has revealed the team tried to get John Wick on the roster.
I've loved the recent Mortal Kombat games, but if there's one thing they have not been good at, it's celebrity cameos. From Ronda Rousey as Sonya, to the Dimitri Vegas skin for Sub-Zero, to most recently Megan Fox as Nitara, more often than not the appearance of a famous face in these games means that you're about to be subjected to voice-acting more grisly than the fatalities. So I'm frankly a little horrified to find out that Ed Boon's dream for Mortal Kombat 1 was for all the fighters to be played by different household names.
Mortal Kombat 1 features two huge actors, with Megan Fox playing Nitara, and Jean-Claude Van Damme available as an alternate skin and voice pack for Johnny Cage. However, Ed Boon didn't want to stop there, at one point envisioning a Mortal Kombat 1 cast where every single fighter was played by a big-name celebrity.
Some fans aren't happy with how she delivered her lines.
With the game out now, the full Mortal Kombat 1 roster has been revealed and it includes 22 playable characters at launch with one more available as DLC.
It's pretty much expected nowadays for the majority of the big fighting games to have some kind of cross-play support, what with them being primarily multiplayer focused experiences. Street Fighter 6 had crossplay at launch, as will Tekken 8 when that releases next year, but it seems like Mortal Kombat 1 fans will have to wait a little bit before they can go a few rounds with someone on a different platform.
NetherRealm Studios has released the launch trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, which launches next week worldwide. Premium and Kollector’s Edition owners can start on September 14th, so this should be a good preview of what to expect.
Mortal Kombat 1 fans aren't too impressed with Johnny Cage's unique Jean-Claude Van Damme skin and have already made edits to it that make him more closely resemble the actor.
Here he is, then – Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1. Despite the Belgian actor famously playing Guile in the live action Street Fighter movie, Cage has always been inspired by the Hollywood star, and he’ll finally feature as the character in the reboot’s Premium Edition, which includes access to the first Kombat Pack.
