‘s Creative Director Ed Boon has teased the possible inclusion of a horror icon as a downloadable character in the game.

Learning who the guest fighters are going to be in the next Mortal Kombat game has become as big a part of the build-up to its release as the reveal of the base roster. Among the guest stars in Mortal Kombat 1 are John Cena's Peacemaker, Invincible's Omni-Man, and Homelander from The Boys. Despite the superhero/supervillain theme when it comes to the new Mortal Kombat game's guests, Ed Boon has revealed the team tried to get John Wick on the roster.
"When we were making Mortal Kombat (1992), the whole team was in the midst of Bloodsport, Enter the Dragon, and all the Terminator movies," Ed Boon told Rolling Stone when discussing development of the very first game in the series and where it pulled inspiration from. "I could certainly see the John Wicks of the world… as a matter of fact, that is one of the ones that we tried to get – John Wick – in Mortal Kombat, and we didn’t get it."

Boon didn't elaborate on what exactly prevented NethearRealm from being able to include Wick as a guest fighter. Odds are it was the studio that owns the Wick IP, Lionsgate, not agreeing to license out the character. It's also possible Keanu Reeves played a part in putting the kibosh on his character being brutally killed millions of times by the likes of Mileena and Sub-Zero.
Reeves was asked whether he would ever like to see Wick, as well as Neo from The Matrix, in Mortal Kombat. "If it was up to me? No. Mortal Kombat is awesome in so many ways, but I think... you know, Neo, John Wick, they're doing their own thing," Reeves told Esquire in 2021. Perhaps Lionsgate asked for his opinion on the matter and that was the answer. It's even possible NetherRealm had already approached Lionsgate about including Wick in Mortal Kombat 1 by that point as development would have been well underway.
Another reason for Lionsgate not wanting Wick in Mortal Kombat is the studio has been fairly adamant about working on a John Wick game of its own for a while. The studio's CEO said as much last year, outlining their desire to develop a triple-A John Wick game in the future. With spinoff show The Continental hitting Peacock this week, and Lionsgate keen to make John Wick 5, the studio is clearly eager to make as much John Wick content as possible.
Had Wick been in Mortal Kombat 1, Boon would have likely wanted Reeves to voice him. The MK creator has revealed he wanted everyone in the game to be voiced by a famous actor. He got some of the way there as Megan Fox is Nitara, and Jean Claude Van Damme is the alternate voice of Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat 1 is out now, but as is traditional for the franchise, launch is just the beginning, with plenty of content still in the pipeline for the fighting franchise’s reboot. Kenshi's arcade ending and intro dialogue in Mortal Kombat 1 seem to be implying that the Special Forces aren't a thing in Liu Kang's new universe, which should be good news for some fans.
Hollywood has gotten hot for video games in 2023, with live-action television adaptations of The Last of Us and Twisted Metal debuting on major streaming services and the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie banking over $1 billion in theaters. Hell, there was even a movie about Tetris this year.
While Mortal Kombat 1 has been populated by a majority of incredible voice performances, many players like to give the voice actors and actresses behind their favorite MK characters some props. To embody a character and give an impeccable performance is more than just doing weird voices and standing in front of a mic. It is to understand a character’s motives, its background, its emotions, and many more. This game is full of stellar performances. For that reason, here is the Mortal Kombat 1 voice cast.
Anyone who picks up a copy of the Premium Edition will have access to the Kombat Pack, this is where you’ll find the confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 DLC characters.
The co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series and director of Mortal Kombat 1, Ed Boon, has revealed that it was a consideration during the most recent game’s development to have every single character played by a recognizable actor.
Mortal Kombat 1 is upon us, and the iconic fighting game series comes full circle and restarts the timeline, adjusting what we knew about all of the Mortal Kombat 1 characters. While we rethink what we knew about the series with Mortal Kombat 1, co-creator and director Ed Boon has talked about the reboot in the context of both Tekken and Street Fighter’s return, and how he felt when Jean-Claude Van Damme went to do the latter’s less-than-favorable ‘90s movie instead of his own videogame.
Mortal Kombat 1 is officially out now, and gamers already love the brutality and roster of characters they can use to defeat enemies and rivals. However, while the gamers are focusing on the now, they’re also focusing on the future. Specifically, they’re focusing on the Kombat Pack that’ll debut in the coming months. The pack will feature not only Kombatants from past titles but also three 3rd party characters that are sure to make things even more interesting. But what might surprise people is that one character almost made it into the game from the beginning: John Wick.
I've loved the recent Mortal Kombat games, but if there's one thing they have not been good at, it's celebrity cameos. From Ronda Rousey as Sonya, to the Dimitri Vegas skin for Sub-Zero, to most recently Megan Fox as Nitara, more often than not the appearance of a famous face in these games means that you're about to be subjected to voice-acting more grisly than the fatalities. So I'm frankly a little horrified to find out that Ed Boon's dream for Mortal Kombat 1 was for all the fighters to be played by different household names.
