Mortal Kombat 1 has just given us our first look at Sindel during Gamescom Opening Night Live, as well as gameplay featuring Shao Kahn. The two will be joining the main fighter's roster.
If you don't know Sindel, the original timeline depicted her as Edenian, while the second timeline made her an Outworlder and eventually a Revenant. More importantly, she's Kitana's mother, ruling as queen of Edenia. And in the newest, third timeline, she is the "empress". Shao Kahn, meanwhile, has been demoted to general. Sorry, bud.

According to a new character bio revealed by the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account, Shao Kahn was born of a "proud military family" and expected to be a soldier, but he had a disability that "infuriated his father". As such, he developed an "extreme program" to reshape Shao Kahn into a "physical colossus", making him the "perfect soldier". Right now, he is sworn to serve Sindel, but if her rule "ever endangers Outworld, he will be the first to try and end it."
This new trailer also confirmed the previously leaked Shujinko kameo, an obscure and infamous Deception-debuting 3D era character who was supposed to take Liu Kang's place following his death. His name literally means protagonist in Japanese, and in the original timeline, he unleashed Dragon King Onaga, the then-next big bad. It's unclear what his role will be in the new, new timeline.
Shujinko wasn't the only new kameo revealed today, as we also got a look at Motaro. Another Mortal Kombat 3 alumni, this Centaurian villain has little story or lore, but is part of an ever-burning war with the Shokan people. AKA Goro's species, who they deem as inferior and weak. In the original timeline, he killed Johnny Cage, and between MK3 and Armageddon, the Shokan people inflicted a curse upon them that turned them into bipedal minotaurs. Luckily, they're back to their Centaurian ways in MK1.
But in the second timeline, i.e. MK9 to MK11, Raiden killed Motaro during the Outworld invasion. Fire God Liu Kang was a little more merciful it seems.
So far, the entire confirmed roster includes the following:
That's not including the first Kombat Pack, which NetherRealm confirmed includes Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Quan Chi, Ermac, and Homelander. That also means the current Kameos roster consists of Cyrax, Shujinko, Motaro, Frost, Goro, Jax Briggs, Kano, Kung Lao, Sareena, Scorpion, Sektor, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, and Stryker. However, despite being DLC, fans did spot Quan Chi in the story mode, slumped over and knocked out cold. Don't expect Homelander to make an appearance, though.
