Mortal Kombat fans will know that NetherRealm has been trying to get Jean-Claude Van Damme in an MK game foir quite some time, ever since the series first launched way back in the 90s in fact. Mortal Kombat 1 will finally achieve that ambitious goal thanks to its Van Damme DLC skin for Johnny Cage, which we've now been given our first look at in a new interview with series creator Ed Boon.
Speaking with Sean Evans in the latest episode of Hot Ones - ashow which sees interviewees each chicken wings with gradually increasing spice levels - Ed Boon talks a little bit about what it took to bring Van Damme to the series and shows off a brief bit of footage of the skin in action. When I say brief, I mean brief too, as all we get is a short clip of a younger Van Damme flipping off Johnny Cage with Sonya Blade stood beside him.

Speaking on Van Damme's inclusion in Mortal Kombat , Boon states that it's a "full circle moment", given that he originally wanted to make a Van Damme arcade game before coming up with Mortal Kombat.
"We actually wanted to see the words ‘Van Damme’. Bloodsport was big, and so was Universal Soldier, I think," says Boon. "So we called his people, and we were like ‘we want to make a game based on Van Damme’, and I don’t know if he declined or just never got to him or something like that."
"But this is, you know, a couple of 20-something-year-old kids who wanted make a video game – I could see how Van Damme would go ‘no, we’re not doing this’. So we tried a number of times, going back and forth with him. This time, we hit the lottery, and we got him. We actually have his voice and he’s going to be the Johnny Cage character, and it’s the absolute full circle moment that we had."
In other Mortal Kombat news, we also recently got confirmation that Nitara will be returning to the series as a playable fighter in Mortal Kombat 1 for the first time in 17 years. Not only that, but a recent trailer revealed that she'll be played by none other than Megan Fox, which adds another high-profile celebrity that is lending their voice to the title. Fans reaction to Nitara's return are pretty postitive, though it seems a lot of people would like the game to bring back her pirate look from Mortal Kombat: Armageddon at some point.

Mortal Kombat 1 players have discovered a bug that gives player one a distinct advantage.
Anyone who picks up a copy of the Premium Edition will have access to the Kombat Pack, this is where you’ll find the confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 DLC characters.
I've loved the recent Mortal Kombat games, but if there's one thing they have not been good at, it's celebrity cameos. From Ronda Rousey as Sonya, to the Dimitri Vegas skin for Sub-Zero, to most recently Megan Fox as Nitara, more often than not the appearance of a famous face in these games means that you're about to be subjected to voice-acting more grisly than the fatalities. So I'm frankly a little horrified to find out that Ed Boon's dream for Mortal Kombat 1 was for all the fighters to be played by different household names.
Some fans aren't happy with how she delivered her lines.
It's pretty much expected nowadays for the majority of the big fighting games to have some kind of cross-play support, what with them being primarily multiplayer focused experiences. Street Fighter 6 had crossplay at launch, as will Tekken 8 when that releases next year, but it seems like Mortal Kombat 1 fans will have to wait a little bit before they can go a few rounds with someone on a different platform.

Mortal Kombat 1 just got a brand-new launch trailer that finally revealed the long-leaked Reiko.
Mortal Kombat 1 fans aren't too impressed with Johnny Cage's unique Jean-Claude Van Damme skin and have already made edits to it that make him more closely resemble the actor.
It’s no secret Mortal Kombat‘s Johnny Cage was based on action legend Jean-Claude Van Damme. The franchise would have looked mighty different had Midway managed to cut a deal to use JCVD’s likeness in the video game and make him the central piece of Van Damme; however, this never happened, and the Muscles from Brussels actually jumped over to the world of Street Fighter a few years later.
Everything comes full circle as Jean-Claude Van Damme prepares to join the lineup of Mortal Kombat 1. The inspiration for Johnny Cage is now a skin for the character, and he’s on display in a new trailer. Van Damme provided his likeness and voice for the skin, which lets him fire off quips with the klassic kast.
The Mortal Kombat character Johnny Cage is very heavily inspired by real-world action star Jean-Claude Van Damme, to the extent that Cage's original appearance is basically a direct lift from the seminal JCVD flick Bloodsport. It took more than 30 years, but now the Mortal Kombat universe finally has the real deal: The Muscles from Brussels will be available as an optional skin for Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1.
