NetherRealm has just released a new update for Mortal Kombat 1, adding the alternate timeline Kameo fighter Janet Cage alongside some quality-of-life improvements. The latest entry in the long-running Mortal Kombat series proved to be a major hit when it launched back in September, quickly becoming one of the highest-rated games of 2023. Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a solid jumping-on point for newcomers thanks to its rebooted plotline while keeping plenty of fun references for longtime fans.
A prime example of this can be found in Mortal Kombat 1’s new Kameo Fighter mechanic, which allows players to select a secondary combatant from a separate roster to assist their main character in match-ups. Much of the existing Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo roster is pulled from the previous MK timeline, featuring warriors like Scorpion and Sonya Blade as they looked during their initial debuts. Just like with Mortal Kombat 1’s base roster, NetherRealm has been adding more Kameos to the game as DLC, such as the earth-bending ninja Tremor and power-mimicking Khameleon.
The third Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Kameo fighter is finally available for all players as part of the March 2024 update, which can be downloaded across all major platforms. Janet Cage, a female, alternate timeline version of Mortal Kombat 1 mainstay Johnny Cage, was announced as a Kameo shortly before fellow MK 1 DLC character Peacemaker made his debut back in February, and now players can select her to assist in battle.
This latest Mortal Kombat 1 update does more than add a new Kameo to the game’s roster, as there are plenty of bug fixes and other improvements to go with Janet Cage. Many of these fixes are specific to MK 1’s derided Nintendo Switch port, which has been panned due to its questionable graphical performance in comparison to other systems. The PC version of MK 1 is also getting an update to its online crossplay multiplayer, and a few glitches in the latest Invasion season have also been addressed.
These are all useful additions to Mortal Kombat 1, but the part of this latest update most likely to generate buzz is the addition of Janet Cage as a Kameo assist character. Her nature as an alternate version of an existing fighter helps her stand out among MK 1’s packed roster, and her introduction could pave the way for other timeline-bending concepts like Hanzo Hasashi’s wife Harumi as Scorpion. Only time will tell if NetherRealm capitalizes on the potential of the Mortal Kombat 1 multiverse, but fans can now select Janet Cage as their backup Kameo as of this most recent update.

Warner Bros. may be updating its patented Nemesis System to allow players to form their own NPC factions and followers to help them in battle. Warner Bros-owned developer Monolith Productions first introduced the Nemesis System in 2014’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, which featured enemies that reacted to and remembered the player’s actions, resulting in more personal rivalries and relationships with Orc foes that all had unique names and behavioral patterns.
Some merchandise suggests that Ermac was originally meant to be a part of Mortal Kombat 1’s base roster instead of a post-launch DLC character. Originally created as a red-colored palette swap of famed ninjas Scorpion and Sub-Zero, Ermac has been a part of the Mortal Kombat mythos since Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and it won’t be long before Mortal Kombat 1 players will be able to take control of this powerful undead warrior. Ermac is set to be introduced as the latest MK 1 DLC character on April 16 for Early Access players and April 23 for everyone else.
