Electronic Arts recently gave fans an update on its in-development Iron Man game, assuring everyone that it is still in progress despite a recent shake-up at developer EA Motive. The past few years have seen an increase in triple-A Marvel video games like the Marvel’s Spider-Man series and the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. EA announced a new deal to make superhero titles for the House of Ideas back in 2022. The first will be an Iron Man game from EA Motive, the studio behind the recent Dead Space remake.
Details about EA’s Iron Man game have been scarce since its announcement, but there have been various updates over the past year or so. EA Motive announced that it was starting production on the Iron Man game last February, and EA would later reveal that it will be using Unreal Engine 5 rather than its proprietary Frostbite Engine. Things haven’t been easy though, as EA announced that it would be laying off 670 employees back in February, a controversial move that ultimately led to Respawn’s Star Wars FPS being canceled.
Motive Studio General Manager Patrick Klaus recently confirmed that the developers’ Iron Man game is still moving forward in a post on the EA website. Even as a group of developers at the studio are being transferred to work on the next Battlefield, Klaus reported that development on Iron Man is proceeding under Executive Producer Olivier Proulx and Creative Director Ian Frazier. “The team made excellent progress this year,” Klaus added, stating that Motive hit a major internal milestone and “laid a robust foundation for the journey ahead.”
Patrick Klaus didn’t disclose any new information on what the Iron Man game is about or when fans can expect to see an official release date. What is known so far is that Iron Man will be a single-player, third-party action title with an original plot, rather than an adaptation of an existing story from the comics like Extremis or Civil War. If successful, Motive’s Iron Man title could lead to even more Marvel games from EA, but the only other such project confirmed so far is a Black Panther title from Cliffhanger Games.
There is much about EA Motive’s Iron Man game that is still unknown, but the idea of taking control of Tony Stark’s incredible high-tech armor with the level of polish shown in recent Marvel games like Insomniac’s well-received Spider-Man series is an exciting prospect for many gamers. It will still be some time before EA Motive is ready to show its Iron Man title in action, but fans can take comfort that development is proceeding well.
