Baldur's Gate 3 team Larian Studios has confirmed it has two new games in the works as it looks to moves on from the Baldur's Gate IP. Having put together one of the greatest RPGs in a generation last year, the Belgian developer won't be making any new narrative content for the third iteration or creating a Baldur's Gate 4. Instead, it's two brand new games, which CEO Swen Vincke is calling the studio's «best work ever».

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been the biggest success story Larian Studios has seen to date, having enjoyed universal critical acclaim and impressive sales to match, but with its next steps, the developer is looking to head into uncharted territories. Larian founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke revealed last month that the studio’s next game wouldn’t be related to the Dungeons and Dragons IP, and the team has now provided further tidbits on where it’s headed next.

The Wicked + The Divine writer Kieron Gillen is re-teaming with his Die collaborator Stephanie Hans for a new one-off graphic novel from Image. Although details of the project are slim so far, We Called Them Giants is a post-apocalyptic story that follows a woman named Lori who wakes up in a world she doesn't understand and - according to Image's statement about the new book - must "scrape by in the ruins of civilization, nearly starving, hiding from gangs when… They arrive."

Having had a few days to sit with the news that Larian Studios, creators of 2023's breakout RPG, Baldur's Gate 3, has scrapped plans for DLC and will not be developing the inevitable next game in the series, we can't help but feel the move was a deeply-baller one. Going out on the highest possible note, outdoing even BioWare's iconic earlier entries, it's time to move on for Larian, and we'll gladly follow. Parent company Hasbro, however, wasted no time, threatening still-in-shock audiences that more D&D games are on the way: «Watch this space.»

Blizzard has revealed a few of the new Uniques and Unique item changes coming in Patch 1.4.0 with Season 4. Let's take a look at what is new and what has changed for some of the Uniques in Diablo 4. Around a month ago, Larian's Michael Douse revealed that Baldur's Gate 3 had sold 'way over' 10 million units. In a new interview with Gamespot from GDC 2024, Larian CEO Swen Vincke provided an updated sales figure by comparing the studio's latest game from the previous one, Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Larian Studios appears ready to leave the Baldur's Gate franchise behind having released the landmark third instalment, with founder Swen Vicke saying the developer has no plans for any Baldur's Gate 3 DLC and won't be producing a fourth game. His comments were made during a GDC panel earlier today, where it was said the team plans to move away from Dungeons & Dragons entirely for something new, which has been in development at least as of January 2024.

We now know that Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios is closing the book on Dungeons & Dragons, with no plans to return for an expansion or sequel. Studio head Swen Vincke knows what's coming next, and it's a step toward a plan he's been concocting for years to make what sounds like the ultimate RPG.

Larian will not work on Baldur's Gate 4 or any expansions for Baldur's Gate 3. This is despite the game's runaway success, selling far better than the developer ever anticipated.

Games Workshop has debuted a new trailer teasing the fourth edition of Age of Sigmar, the fantasy tabletop game set in the ashes of Warhammer Fantasy Battles’ Old World. The world of Elden Ring is filled with mysteries. The game doesn't hold your hand for long before letting you venture out in any direction you like – which is both a blessing and a curse. Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is taking us to the namesake Land of Shadow by being pulled into Miquella's cocoon. Before it set the role-playing world ablaze with Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios sent a considerably smaller, but still sizable, portion of video game role-players into a tizzy with its Divinity: Original Sin series. Itself a spinoff of the studio’s long-running Divinity franchise, Original Sin and its sequel charmed players with tongue-in-cheek storytelling and a Rube Goldbergian approach to fantasy battles, one where swinging a sword wasn’t the wrong way to play, but it certainly wasn’t the best one. Larian preferred its players create gonzo chain reactions on the battlefield, throwing barrels to spill oil over enemies who had tripped over ice because you froze the water underfoot and will now set them ablaze.

Just when you thought you know everything about this game, you’re proven wrong. One Baldur’s Gate 3 player realized that you can poison a keg in the Underdark, and then posted about it on Reddit.

Palworld players can seem a little obsessed with the idea of breeding the perfect Pals; hundreds of cakes resulting in hundreds of Eggs to pass down the perfect Passive Traits for a chosen purpose. For the most part, these desired Passive Traits are ones that boost mount speed. 

Patch 10.2.5 added follower dungeons to WoW, allowing players to complete normal dungeons with AI NPCs. While this feature is aimed mostly at players looking to try something new, it can also be used to collect. Amid the altogether glowing launch reception for Baldur's Gate 3, which went on to win just about every GOTY award under the sun and which we also put at the summit of the best games of 2023, there were a fair few reviews and posts from long-time CRPG fans who argued that Larian's take on the series felt more like a Divinity game than a Baldur's Gate game. That's not necessarily calling it bad – the Divinity games are beloved, after all – but perhaps it just doesn't feel like the Baldur's Gates of old. And I remember similar conversations around Baldur's Gate 3's early access launch about three years ago.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a huge game with many different routes to take, but eventually, it's time to move on. As it happens, Larian has a long history with the CRPG genre, so understandably, many have gone back to play the studio's previous game, Divinity: Original Sin 2.

If I got to redesign Baldur's Gate 3 to fit my specific preferences, the first thing I'd do is get rid of the party system. My posse of Shadowheart, Astarion, and Karlach is great, but my favorite character to roleplay is the wandering ronin—the problem solver with an air of mystery who can take care of himself (Geralt of Rivia, essentially). But alas, BG3 is built with a full party of four in mind. You could try to fly solo, but difficulty doesn't scale to smaller parties, so fights would inevitably become impossibly punishing. Unless mods can save the day.

While the focus is very much on Baldur's Gate 3 right now, developer Larian Studios has promised a return to its original fantasy universe, but after a well-earned break. The studio earned its spurs in the eyes of RPG fans with the Divinity: Original Sin series (mostly on PC), beginning something of a roleplaying renaissance with the almost-universal acclaim garnered by Divinity: Original Sin 2 in particular. It's been working on BG3 since 2017, in some form or another, and the results are intimidating in the best way.

Before Larian Studios was handed the keys to the Baldur's Gate kingdom, it built its own original RPG world in the Divinity games, a sprawling series that goes back more than 20 years. And even though the studio is all-in on resurrecting one of the most famous CRPG names of all time, Larian boss Swen Vincke told IGN that it hasn't forgotten about the Divinity games, and will return to them someday.
