Larian boss says more Divinity games are coming after Baldur's Gate 3: 'We're definitely gonna get back there'

Larian Studios has two patches in the works for Baldur’s Gate 3 — the first targeting over 1,000 bug fixes and tweaks to the Dungeons & Dragons-based role-playing game and feelgood hit of the summer. The second will move on from mere bug-squashing and will start incorporating some of players’ most requested features.

Taking to Twitter some hours ago, Larian Studios' Creative Director Swen Vincke shared a short Baldur's Gate 3 update roadmap.

Larian boss Swen Vincke has revealed that the studio is currently working on a number of updates to critically-acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. Among updates coming to the game, it is slated to get Hotfix 4, its first major patch with over 1,000 fixes and tweaks, and a second patch that will bring in some fan-requested features to the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best RPG game of 2023 right now, and it’s only going to get bigger and better. Larian Studios has revealed that a few updates are in the works for the Dungeons & Dragons-style experience currently. Baldur’s Gate 3 is not going to be slowing down any time soon, with multiple hotfix patches already under Larian Studios’ belt, as detailed by a roadmap posted by the game’s director himself. From bug fixes to features, there’s a lot in store.

I've struggled at times on Baldur's Gate 3's normal difficulty, so I can only imagine how it feels for players who are brand new to D&D or Larian RPGs. With very little explanation, it chucks hotbars full of terms like «bonus action,» «cantrip,» spell slot," and so much more at players. If it feels like you missed a tutorial, you're not the only one, but in an interview with PC Gamer last week, Larian founder Swen Vincke contested that there is a tutorial in Baldur's Gate 3, just not a traditional step-by-step guide. It's all of Act 1.

It took me a few hours with Baldur's Gate 3 to fully come to a realization that is pretty dang obvious in hindsight—if you're playing in four-player co-op like I am, there's absolutely no room for more companions in your life. 

Baldur's Gate 3 is an exceptional game: a grognardy CRPG with complex and barely-explained D&D rules and a massive mainstream success, even before its console releases. With Diablo 4's always-online grind providing the perfect contrast, it's come across to some as a victory over malignant modern videogame trends: Where other companies build cosmetics stores and battle passes, Larian has succeeded through good old fashioned respect for player freedom and quality craftwork, or so goes some popular posts and articles. A handful of game developers, meanwhile, have cautioned against oversimplifying the lesson, arguing that Baldur's Gate 3 is an anomaly that even big studios won't be able to replicate. Online arguing has ensued.

It's been weeks since the news surfaced that Baldur's Gate 3 lets you hook up with a bear - really, it's a Druid who can shapeshift into a bear. Larian's highly-anticipated RPG has seen unprecedented success in several categories on Steam, we've been experimenting with mods and party compositions, and we're still working on our Baldur's Gate 3 review-in-progress. And yet, as much as I try to escape it, I'm still writing about bear sex.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a game of grand adventure, a game of nuanced character choices, a game of creative problem solving, a game full of literally hundreds of spells. It's also a game where you can have sex with a bear. Guess which of the above rocketed Baldur's Gate 3 to viral mainstream attention just a few weeks before release? I expected Baldur's Gate 3 to be big, but I did not expect a marketing campaign highlighting a sex scene with a bear (okay, to be clear, it's a sex scene with a druid who can transform into a bear) to help Baldur's Gate 3 pull in 800,000 concurrent players over the weekend.

Baldur's Gate 3 is already performing "way beyond" the expectations of developer Larian.

As the video game community knows very well, there are times when video game developers and publishers set unrealistic expectations for their titles. They’ll set basic expectations about what they “need to sell,” which is usually fair. But then, some teams have “high expectations,” and when the game doesn’t reach them, they’ll say it “underperformed” even though it really didn’t. For the team at Larian Studios, they spent years with Baldur’s Gate 3 in Steam Early Access and had players helping them figure out what to fix and how to make the game better for when it finally launched.
