Larian confirmed earlier this week that it won't be working on Baldur's Gate 4, or any expansions for Baldur's Gate 3. Now, fans are wondering if its next game will be another entry in the Divinity series, perhaps even the long-awaited Divinity: Original Sin 3.
This speculation comes from the hints that Larian has dropped about its next game, including the fact that it won't be based on Dungeons & Dragons. This leaves the door open for Larian to return to Divinity, since this is its own IP running on its own RPG system.
Fans have good reason to believe that Larian's next project is Divinity: Original Sin 3. It fits the bill with what we've heard so far - a huge, non-D&D game - but we also know that it's a game that's been on Larian's mind since before Baldur's Gate 3's launch. Speaking with IGN in July 2023, Larian boss Swen Vincke said that the team is "definitely" interested in revisiting the Divinity series.
It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point [...] We'll first finish this one [Baldur's Gate 3] now, and then take a break, because we will need to refresh ourselves creatively also.
We also know that the next game Larian works on is already in the early stages of production because Vincke has previously commented that he's drafted the first act of its story. At the time, many of us assumed this would be Baldur's Gate 4, but he may have actually been referring to Divinity: Original Sin 3 instead.
In the meantime though, Larian isn't done with Baldur's Gate 3. Vincke has reaffirmed the team's pledge to get more patches out, which will add mod support, cross-platform play, and more cinematics. He's also revealed that new endings for evil characters will be added in the future patch, but outside of that, we should lower our expectations, as the devs are largely done with adding completely new content.
It remains to be seen when Larian will be ready to spill the beans on its next game. Divinity fans have been patient enough, with the last instalment, Divinity: Original Sin 2, launching all the way back in 2017. Many Baldur's Gate 3 fans have since picked it up to fill the hole in their lives but quickly got destroyed by its increased difficulty.

Swen Vincke, head of Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, is dreaming about a "very big RPG that will dwarf them all," but he wants to make sure there are a few things you know about it.
Evil Baldur's Gate 3 players, rejoice. It's been confirmed that developer Larian Studios is currently working on expanded "evil endings" for the beloved RPG, some of which are apparently "very evil." Juicy.
Larian is moving away from Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate for its next project, but CEO Swen Vincke says the studio had made a start on Baldur's Gate 3 DLC and was even thinking about a proper sequel before the final decision was made.
At long last, Baldur's Gate 3's physical PC Deluxe Edition has begun making its way into fans' hands, and for anyone who loves filling their shelves with games, this one is an absolute beauty. Especially if you're someone who already owns boxed editions of other classic Dungeons & Dragons RPGs.
Larian's writing director is "so excited" for the studio's next game after Baldur's Gate 3.
Larian Studios head Swen Vincke has decided to set the record straight on their relationship with Wizards of the Coast in regards to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Following a few days of speculation after Larian boss Swen Vincke announced that the studio’s next game will not be Baldur’s Gate 4, he has clarified that the reason for this new direction was all about Larian wanting to take a new direction, and not because of changes at D&D owner Wizards of the Coast.
It’s been a rather interesting Game Developers Conference for Larian Studios, with the developer confirming that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t receive DLC, expansions or a sequel. Instead, it has two new games in mind, including a “very big RPG” that will dwarf its 2023 magnum opus. Since it doesn’t have the tech yet, this won’t be the studio’s next game.
Baldur's Gate 3 is getting new endings, with director Swen Vincke describing them as "really evil".
Baldur’s Gate 3 game director Swen Vincke shocked fans of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG when he revealed that the critically acclaimed game would not get any expansions and that Larian Studios would not go right into making Baldur’s Gate 4. Considering how much of a runaway success Baldur’s Gate 3 has been, it seemed like that would be the most logical continuation of things. Larian isn’t the only studio to leave behind a wildly successful game either; Nintendo has confirmed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also won’t get any expansions.
Larian Studios has made headlines with its panel at GDC 2024, as founder Swen Vincke announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 wouldn’t receive any DLC, expansions or a sequel. He also revealed that the studio was working on DLC, which was cancelled due to not “really coming from the heart.” The acclaimed RPG is still a massive hit for Larian, with “way over” 10 million copies sold.
