Baldur's Gate 3 is getting new endings, with director Swen Vincke describing them as "really evil".
This comes after Vincke announced that Larian will not be working on any expansions for Baldur's Gate 3, and it won't be making a sequel. He has, however, reassured fans that patches are still on the way, and we now know that one of these updates will include new endings for players running evil campaigns.
Vincke spoke about these endings in an interview with IGN, right off the back of his appearance at GDC earlier in the week. He doesn't give us many details on these new endings, but it is interesting to note that he's talking about endings, plural, so we can expect multiple new outcomes for evil characters.
"So they're working on the evil endings right now," says Vincke. "I've seen some of them. They're really evil. So the evil players will be satisfied with that."
Spoilers for various Baldur's Gate 3 endings ahead.
While this doesn't give too much of the game away, we can make an educated guess on how these new endings will be implemented. Right now, the most evil ending you can get involves becoming the Absolute. There are a few variations on this, as you can partner up with Astarion or Minthara to take the throne together, or just take all the power for yourself. If you're playing as The Dark Urge, you can even claim it in Bhaal's name. But whatever your reason, you don't get to see the consequences of your actions. With your companions now under your control, there's no reunion camp like the other endings, and you just skip to the credits.
The Dark Urge got a new ending in a previous patch . It's horrifying.
So, with Larian looking to expand upon the evil endings, this would be a great place to start. Maybe we'll get our own time jump, as we get to see what our little monsters are getting up to with their near-limitless dominion over Faerûn. Just don't expect it to be as jolly as the reunion camp - unless you're mind-controlling everyone into pretending everything is fine, which is quite creepy.
These new endings could focus on other areas too. Anyone who gets with an ascended Astarion or even plays as one could see this ending fleshed out further. The same goes for Shadowheart if she becomes a Dark Justiciar. Lae'zel already got an extended ending if she stays loyal to Vlaakith, so it would make sense for other origin characters to get the same treatment for their worst outcomes.
There's no telling when these new endings will be added, but patches are fairly frequent. We've also got mod support and cross-play on the way, so Larian has a lot to add before it moves on to its next project.
