Halo’s first season felt like an old-school video game adaptation: desperate to be taken seriously and terrified of all of the specific oddities about its source material that people actually love. Sure, there were firefights, Spartans, Cortana, and Master Chief, but there was also a shoehorned romance plotline, a forced theme of trauma, and not nearly as many aliens as you’d hope. The good news is the first few minutes of season 2, which premieres on Feb. 8, are a perfect encapsulation of everything the Halo series could be, and light years better than anything from season 1.

This pack will add Court Chroniclers who will be able to produce propaganda that can strengthen the power of your bloodline. However, that very bloodline will be under threat from the spread of the Black Death, which will spread through the world.

Sweet liberty! One of my favorite PS4-era shooters is back with a whole new perspective and it’s up to me and my friends to defend Super Earth in glorious co-op! After going hands-on with Helldivers 2 for three hours, I’m sold on the bold pivot from the original’s top-down view to the sequel’s new third-person perspective, the appetizing roster of deadly gadgets, and the outrageous comedic tone that expertly channels the low-budget action film vibes that pair perfectly with the developer’s live-service ambitions. I’m a bit concerned at the moment that it won’t have enough content to go the distance long term, with only two enemy factions (so far as we know), procedurally generated levels that can feel a bit one-note, and no real live-service roadmap at launch, but with such a strong, effortlessly fun foundation, it’s definitely off to good start. With all the over-the-top gore and patriotic pageantry of Starship Troopers, Helldivers 2 is the kind of wonderfully silly shooter that me and my friends could easily lose many Friday nights to.

Horror as a mode or genre encompasses a vast range of styles and approaches from the quiet and creepy to the over-the-top splatterfest. As a self-confessed horror fan, I’m generally pretty open-minded when it comes to different iterations of the form. The one exception to this, however, is the seemingly ubiquitous ‘YouTube’ horror game which relies almost entirely on jump scares and is mostly pitched towards overly performative streamer reactions. That being said, there are some excellent games within this rough genre, with the Amnesia series and Alien: Isolation standing supreme so I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised by Evil Nun. In the end, what I got was perhaps the very definition of an empty streamer experience.

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is coming to Apple devices on Jan. 30, and one of the best phone controllers around is getting a limited-edition version to celebrate. The Backbone One controller has a design that’s inspired by Death Stranding, and it comes with a free App Store code for the game, which can be redeemed for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. According to a page on Backbone’s site that no longer shows the controller, the package will cost $125 when it becomes available to buy on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. ET.

Diablo 4 Season of the Construct is upon us, and the response to the new content has not been especially positive so far. One of the most common points of criticism so far is the addition of traps, which many players are finding downright annoying.

The Prince of Persia series made its grand return last week with The Lost Crown, an excellent Metroidvania that learns from and improves upon some of the genre’s best games. It’s got an entertaining story to boot, which plays around with the concept of timelines without defaulting to a contrived multiverse story like Mortal Kombat 1. All its time travel and frequent flashbacks can make the story hard to parse at times, though.

A new report claims that the full title of DS2 is, in fact, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. I would not believe it if not for the fact that we're talking about a Hideo Kojima game here, and the name seems to be a reference to a 64-year-old film.

With such a dire post-pandemic world and a cinematic flair, it's unsurprising that is filled with memorable lines.

By the time reaches is unflinchingly bloody finale, it's difficult to feel as though something has actually been accomplished after experiencing a narrative that has only plummeted wildly into chaos. 's core tenet seems to be a warning that violence only begets violence, and the game's focus on insatiable revenge only leaves those involved with traumatic uncertainty.
