Back in 2020 IllFonic released Predator: Hunting Grounds, another take on the asymmetric multiplayer formula they’ve employed with titles like Friday the 13th: The Game and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. Somewhat oddly, the game was published by Sony as a PC and PS4 console exclusive. Despite the big-name publisher, the game kind of came and went without too much fanfare, but now it seems IllFonic is preparing the revive the game on current-gen platforms.

The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 creators CD Projekt Red have reported their earnings for 2023 (their fiscal year corresponds with the regular calendar year) and it seems it was a good 12 months for the Polish publisher. 2023 was CDPR’s second-best year ever, thanks to the sales of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion, which managed to move 5 million copies, which is added to the 20 million in sales for the original Cyberpunk 2077. CDPR has also announced that The Witcher series surpassed 75 million units sold last year. So, yes, if you’re doing the math (75 million for the Witcher, 25 million for Cyberpunk) CDPR has now sold over 100 million games. Not bad!

Overwatch 2 Season 10 kicks off next month, but if you want to try out the season’s hew hero Venture early, you can do it this weekend. Venture, who Blizzard is touting at their first non-binary character, is a Damage hero and, overall, one of the more unique-looking characters Blizzard has served up thus far. Basically, they can burrow under the ground ala Bugs Bunny (or Mario in his Drill Suit I suppose) allowing them to sneak behind enemy lines then burst out to deal damage. Hellgate: London was a game ahead of its time in a lot of ways, introducing open-world looter and roguelike mechanics before those things became a hot trend. As such, the game is still remembered fairly well despite not being a huge seller at the time. Well, it seems the series may be coming back, because the original game’s producer Bill Roper has announced an Unreal Engine 5 sequel, Hellgate: Redemption, will be produced through his new studio Lunacy Games. For the past four-years-plus, animal lovers have been able to live out their dreams on PC with Frontier Developments’ acclaimed Planet Zoo, and now, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 owners can get in on the fun. It seems like Frontier has gone the extra mile with this port, as it features full support for both controllers and keyboard-and-mouse, and the ability to share zoos between XSX and PS5. The console port will also have a “zoo complexity meter” which will allow you to keep an eye on the scope of your zoo to make sure performance stays high (very large zoos could get quite demanding on PC). In a recent “business update,” Xbox boss Phil Spencer and other execs sought to calm fears, saying major exclusives like Starfield are staying put (for now) and Microsoft is working on powerful new hardware, but fans have been skeptical in the face of “flatlining” demand for Xbox consoles.

While Microsoft has tried to put a happy face on things, the future of Xbox – at least Xbox as a distinct brand with its own hardware and exclusives – has never been more in question. Last month Microsoft tried to calm worries with an Xbox Business Update, in which they revealed several older, smaller-scale games were going multiplatform, but that others, like Starfield, aren’t for now. Furthermore, they vowed to continue working on new hardware which will, apparently, deliver the “largest technical leap ever” (how they plan to deliver on that boast, I don’t know).

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is finally here, and while many are enjoying the experience, there have been some complaints, leading to a bit of a mini-backlash against the game. One of the issues that’s brought up in a lot of negative reviews on Steam and elsewhere are microtransactions tied to items that provide quality-of-life features like being able to re-edit your character, place warp makers, and more. Now, most of these things can be earned via regular play in-game, but getting them is just difficult enough that some may be enticed to pay real money for them. We’ve known Final Fantasy XVI would be getting a pair of story expansions for some time now, with the first one, Echoes of the Fallen being more of a bite-sized experience. Thankfully, the second, The Rising Tide, will be much meatier, and today at a panel at PAX West, Square Enix pulled the curtain back on what to expect. The DLC will introduce a new area, the coastal land of Mysidia, an additional ally for your team named Shula, and the powerful water Eikon, Leviathan. Last December, after literally years of speculation, rumors, and leaks, Rockstar finally dropped the first teaser for Grand Theft Auto VI, with a broad 2025 release date attached. It was appropriate that the GTA VI trailer used a Tom Petty song, because the waiting is indeed the hardest part, but at least fans have a firm 2025 end goal in sight… right? Right?

Needless to say, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a success beyond anybody’s wildest expectations, racking of GOTY awards and over 10 million in sales, so what’s next for the game’s developer Larian Studios? More content for Baldur’s Gate 3 followed by Baldur’s Gate 4, right? Strike while the iron’s hot!

The former NPD Group (now named “Circana”) has released its full North American sales data for February, and it seems like it was a pretty solid month for the industry. Players spent $4.7 billion on games, additional content, and hardware in February, up 2 percent year-on-year. Hardware was a weak spot, down 30 percent year-on-year, with PS5 #1 in terms of unit and dollar sales, Switch #2 in terms of unit sales, and Xbox Series X/S #2 in terms of dollar sales.

Fans are still waiting for a full reveal of what can be expected from Diablo IV Season 4, but today during their latest “Campfire Chat,” Blizzard revealed some of the nitty gritty things players need to know about the season. First off, Season 4 will be arriving later than expected, as Blizzard wants to make sure that feedback from Diablo IV’s first public test realm will be fully incorporated. So, instead of coming out on April 16 as previously promised, Season 4 will arrive on May 14.

We’ve known for some time that Uncharted creator Amy Hennig was working on a Marvel project at her recently-founded Skydance New Media studio, and in fact, she teased a World-War-II-set game featuring Captain American and Black Panther back in 2022. Well, today at Epic’s State of Unreal Engine 2024 GDC livestream, the curtain was fully pulled back the game, which is officially title Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has arrived, and the game is a bit of beast on pretty much any hardware you’ll play it on. Not only is it a “dynamic” 30fps on current-gen consoles (in other words, often under 30fps) but not even a high end PCs are free from troubles – Wccftech’s reviewer Alessio Palumbo had issues despite rocking an RTX 4090 and a Ryzen 7800X3D. A lack of promised DLSS 3 at launch also means there are limited ways to smooth over the problems.

Microsoft has revealed the titles they’ll be adding to Xbox Game Pass on PC and consoles in late March and very-early April, and it’s a pretty packed lineup. The headliner is Diablo IV, one of the first major Acti-Blizz games to jump to Game Pass following Microsoft’s acquisition of the publisher. Other notable additions include The Quarry, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2, and the new-release indie game Open Roads.

World of Warcraft has been a pioneer when it comes to open-world online multiplayer, and yet, the game has kind of missed out one of the big recent trends in that space – battle royale. Well, apparently that changes now, as Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft “Plunderstorm,” a new pirate-themed 60-player battle royale limited-time activity. SNK’s library of fighting franchises tend bleed into each other a bit, but back in the day, the company was best-known for the Fatal Fury series. Eventually, the King of Fighters series, which included characters from multiple SNK games, largely supplanted Fatal Fury, but now we’re getting a Furious return. While they teased it previously, today SNK officially announced Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, which will combine classic gameplay with the new “REV” system. Much like Street Fighter 6, the new Fatal Fury will also introduce a more casual “Smart Style” mode that will allow you to easily pull off special moves. Steam Family Sharing has long been one of the handier features of Valve’s platform, although it’s always had a few limitations. Family Sharing lets you share your library with another Steam users, but only one person could access said library at once, regardless of what specific game you were playing. That could start to be a bit of a headache, particularly if you had a lot of people in your “family.”

Minecraft dropped its latest update earlier this week, but those playing on PC may want to avoid downloading it. Mojang is warning that those who update Minecraft via the Xbox app on PC may have their worlds wiped. Mojang recommends running the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC on the Xbox App before downloading the latest update, but until an actual fix is released, I’d remain wary. For now, automatic updates through the PC Xbox App have been disabled by Mojang as a preventive measure.

Halo Infinite’s regular seasonal updates have come to an end, but 343 Industries aren’t abandoning the game, and in fact next week will see the launch of a fairly significant update. This patch will offer a full networking overhaul – rather than trying to patch problems in Halo Infinite’s original networking model, they’ve decided to completely change the underlying tech. At the same time, Easy Anti-Cheat is being added to the game.

Spring is almost upon us (or already here for those lucky enough to not be living in Canada) and that means the Steam Spring Sale is in full swing, offering discounts on thousands of titles. The Star Wars Battlefront franchise has seen its ups and downs in recent years, but some players allowed themselves to become excited about Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, a remaster of the first two games in the series originally developed by Pandemic Studios. The Collection didn’t look like a radical remaster, but as long as it offered a playable version of the series’ classic multiplayer, then fans likely would have been happy. Well, about that.

Enshrouded, the new game from the makers of Portal Knights that mashes up Valheim with a bit of Zelda, is the latest indie survival success on the scene, having attracted over 2 million players since launching in Steam Early Access in January. Well, now Enshrouded developer Keen Games has revealed what they plan to add to the game before its 1.0 launch next year, and it’s a packed list.

We knew it was coming, particularly considering the ultimate demise of E3, but today Geoff Keighley announced when this year’s big Summer Game Fest kickoff show will take place. This year’s event will be livestreamed to the world on June 7 and once again emanate from the Los Angeles' YouTube Theater. If you’d like to take in the festivities in person, public ticket sales will begin on May 7. In the meantime, you can sign up for alerts at the Summer Game Fest website.

After numerous delays, the anticipated System Shock remake launched on PC to solid reviews and enthusiastic fan response early last year, but when do console players get in on the retro cyberpunk fun? Developer Nightdive Studios have always said a console version of the new System Shock was in the works (which sets it apart from the PC-only original) but have been a bit cagey about when it might arrive.

Does a co-op multiplayer Spider-Man game from Insomniac sound like something you’d want to play? Well, sorry, while it was in the works, it’s no longer in production. For a while we heard rumblings a multiplayer Spidey project was happening, but then as part of Sony’s recent step back from their (over) ambitious live service plans, the project was reportedly canceled. And that would usually be that, but the massive Insomniac Games leak from late last year is still yielding new information, including a trailer for that canceled multiplayer project, entitled Spider-Man: The Great Web.

Since launch late last year, Forza Motorsport has received a bit of a mixed reaction from fans, with one of the biggest criticisms being against the game’s grindy progression system. Every car in the game has a number of parts and systems you can tinker with, but in order to do so, you need to level up and this leveling needs to be done with every car you want to upgrade. Needless to say, this gets pretty grindy!

We’ve known since before Final Fantasy XVI was released that it would eventually be coming to PC, but Square Enix has remained rather cagey about when PS5 exclusivity might end. Well, in a new interview with Game Informer, FF16 producer Naoki Yoshida gave his most direct answer yet about the PC port of the game, indicating it may not be far off.

Warner Bros has decided to make Mortal Kombat 1 free-to-play for this weekend, from today to 10th March, along with providing a sweet 40% discount on Steam.

It seems like the gaming industry, at least the traditional console-driven industry, is rapidly approaching some sort of inflection point. Xbox is bringing more of their games to other platforms, amid consistent speculation they may be stepping back from the console business, and PlayStation is hinting they may pursue a more aggressive PC release schedule even as PS5 sales continue to outpace the PS4. Meanwhile, one publisher after another announces deep layoffs and cancellations.

Late last evening it was sadly announced that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama had passed away. He was 68. While Toriyama stood as one of the giants of the anime and manga industry, largely due to success of Dragon Ball, as well as lesser-known series like Sand Land and Dr. Slump, his contributions to the world of video games were almost as significant and perhaps even more varied.

Update: Well, here’s a weird one – apparently this update accidentally gave players access to Spider-Man 2’s developer debug mode. Insomniac is warning that entering debug mode could corrupt saves, although playing as normal shouldn’t cause an issue (you need to enter a button combination to activate debug mode). Needless to say, Insomniac will likely be patching up this whoopsie soon, but they may have opened up a bit of a Pandora’s box.

Released back in 2019, Outward is an open-world survival RPG that’s managed to attract a fairly dedicated audience (Canadian developer Nine Dots Studio claims it’s sold over 1.3 million units). Back in 2022 we got a new “Definitive Edition” of the game for current-gen platforms, and now it seems a full-on sequel is in the works. Just announced today, Outward 2 will build on the foundation laid down by the first game, with livelier NPCs, improved character creation, updated combat, and more. Back in late 2020 new Montreal-based studio Reflector Entertainment made a bit of splash when they revealed Unknown 9: Awakening at The Game Awards. The game’s reveal cinematic was very impressive, and next-gen consoles had just launched, so there was some hope that this was perhaps what we could expect from the new generation (sadly, not quite). Reflector also had ambitious plans for a full Unknown 9 multimedia universe with novels, comics, and more announced. Annnd then we didn’t really hear anything further about Unknown 9 for years, to the point many suspected it was vaporware.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is one of the more intriguing games on Capcom’s upcoming slate. The relatively-rare new IP from Capcom, the game has certainly caught eyes with its heavily-stylized Japanese-folklore-inspired visuals reminiscent of the fan-favorite Okami, but actual details about the game have been somewhat scant. Well, thankfully, during today’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase, we got a fresh look at Capcom’s upcoming adventure.

2019’s The Sinking City was a solid entry in the growing catalogue of Lovecraft-inspired horror and adventure games, which later became better-known for the bitter legal battle over the game between developer Frogwares and publisher Nacon. Frogwares was ultimately successful in that battle, and today during the latest Xbox Partner Preview showcase, they announced The Sinking City 2 is on the way.

What exactly can Xbox Series X/S and PS5 owners expect from Dragon’s Dogma 2 in terms of performance? It’s been an open question, with answers being surprisingly hard to come by – at first, we heard it might be targeting 30fps, but analysis of footage seemed to indicate that wasn’t necessarily the case. Capcom stepped in to say the game would have an “uncapped” framerate, which… didn’t exactly clear things up.

Microsoft has revealed the titles they’ll be adding to Xbox Game Pass on PC and consoles in early-to-mid March, and there’s a decent array of stuff to choose from. The headliner is Sony’s own MLB The Show 24, and as in the past couple years, Xbox owners actually get a better deal on the game (it won’t be on PS Plus on Day 1). Those who buy the Digital Deluxe Add-on can even get in on the MLB The Show 24 early access period via Game Pass. Subscribers can also look forward to a few more solid options, includng Control Ultimate Edition, No More Heroes 3, a little SpongeBob SquarePants action, and more.

Late last month Nintendo officially filed suit against the makers of Yuzu, one of the most popular Switch emulators. While most expected the case to drag on in typical legal fashion, it turns out it’s already been settled, and not in Yuzu’s favor.

We’ve already had an unusual number of showcases and announcements this year, and it seems this particular train is going to keep right on rolling. Today Microsoft announced an Xbox Partner Preview, which will showcase over a dozen trailers for games coming to PC, Xbox, and/or Game Pass.

2024 is set to be a pretty big year for RPGs, with the likes of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Avowed all queued up to launch, but what about Dragon Age: Dreadwolf? There have been a number of hints that BioWare’s latest may be nearing completion, but when might we actually get our hands on it?

Embracer Group gobbled up a lot of studios during its 2020-era spending spree, but perhaps the biggest acquisitions were Saber Interactive (World War Z, many, many ports) and Gearbox Software (Borderlands). It’s clear Embracer had big plans for Saber and Gearbox, as both were spun into entire company divisions with other smaller studios reporting to them, but those plans have changed – Embracer’s fortunes took a turn when a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia fell through and the company has been desperately cutting costs since. Apparently, this means two of their crown jewels have to go.

Like previous entries in the series, Mortal Kombat 1 is rolling out plenty of DLC fighters, with the game’s first “Kombat Pack” including Omni-Man from Invincible, Quan Chi, Peacemaker from Suicide Squad, Ermac, Homelander from The Boys, and Takahashi Takeda.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is all about decadence and riding slick cars around its urban Hong Kong environment, or, at least, that’s what it’s mostly about. There actually is a more wild side to Hong Kong and during today’s Nacon Connect showcase we got a new trailer for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown which shows off the game’s grittier offroad side and some of its heavier vehicles, including trucks, SUVs, and more. One of the keys to truly getting the most out of the dark looter-shooter Remnant II is finding some folks to team up with, but unfortunately, players' ability to do that has been somewhat limited by the fact that the game hasn’t supported crossplay. The new Alone in the Dark arrives in only a few short weeks, and publisher THQ Nordic has dropped a new trailer, showcasing some of its unique features. Much like the classic Resident Evil 2, players can play through the game as one of two different characters, Edward and Emily, with the experience changing based on which one you pick. The trailer shows how even character interactions will change based on who you play as. We also get a further look at Derceto Manor and its colorful cast of characters – it seems like interacting with them will be what really sets Alone in the Dark apart from your typical Resident Evil wannabe fare. It’s widely expected Nintendo will launch a successor to the Switch in the first quarter of next year and one of the biggest questions surrounding the new hardware is, what are they going to use for storage? The Switch allows you to use pretty much any old microSD card as long as it has a transfer speed of at least 60 MB/s, but if Nintendo aims to bring their games more up to modern standards, that’s probably not going to cut it anymore. That said, the M.2 NVMe SSDs used in next-gen consoles and the Steam Deck may be too hot and power-hungry if Nintendo aims to stick to the slim Switch form factor with their next hardware, so what do they do?

WWE 2K24 will be launching with over 200 names, but, as usual, the game will also have a season pass that adds a number of additional superstars to the roster. The season pass will include some major recent additions to the WWE roster, including CM Punk, Jade Cargill, Nia Jax, and Kairi Sane, as well as some legends including Diamond Dallas Page, Lex Luger, and the Iron Sheik. Oh, and you’ll also be able to play as Post Malone, because sure, why not?

Today was Pokémon Day, marking the release of the original Game Boy titles in Japan, and Nintendo and The Pokémon Company used the occasion to reveal what’s coming next for the franchise. The big news was the announcement of the next major core entry in the series, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which won’t be coming until 2025. This means 2024 will be the first year in a long time without any new console Pokémon game, although fans may not actually be that upset by that, as many have been urging Game Freak to take more time with their games following the messy launch of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

After many years of development and countless delays, Skull and Bones has finally arrived. While the main danger you’ll face in the game are other ships, the ocean itself can also send you down to Davy Jones’ locker. While exploring the open ocean area in the middle of Skull and Bones large Indian Ocean map, the seas will often get rough, and occasionally serve up a particularly large “rogue wave,” which can immediately sink your boat if you don’t handle it correctly. This can be a bit panic-inducing, and you’ll probably go down the first time you encounter one, but if you know what to do they’re not actually that dangerous. Since being announced back in 2021, there have been a lot of questions about what Assassin’s Creed Infinity would even be. We've known Infinity would be a hub of sorts that connects other Assassin’s Creed experiences and includes online elements, but beyond that, things have remained sketchy. The release of WWE 2K24 is only a couple weeks away, and 2K Games has officially unveiled the game’s launch roster of over 220 Superstars from Raw, Smackdown, NXT, and yesteryear. One of the main questions fans had was how the recent bombshell lawsuit that leveled accusations of sexual coercion, assault, and trafficking against Vince McMahon, while also naming Brock Lesnar, would affect the lineup.
