We’ve known since before Final Fantasy XVI was released that it would eventually be coming to PC, but Square Enix has remained rather cagey about when PS5 exclusivity might end. Well, in a new interview with Game Informer, FF16 producer Naoki Yoshida gave his most direct answer yet about the PC port of the game, indicating it may not be far off.
"In terms of where we are in development currently, we're trying to figure out the final stages of optimization right now. When we can release the PC version might be dependent on that – the system requirements and specifications for PC that players will need, so we're trying to figure that out. Naturally, [the PC specifications] are looking to be somewhat high."
As Yoshida indicated, they’re currently in the optimization stage, as they don’t want Final Fantasy XVI to punish folks’ rigs too much. Yoshida also hints a PC demo will be coming, and it’s arrival “won't be too distant in the future -- it won't be a year, it won't be two years, it will probably be shorter than that.”
So, it sounds like Final Fantasy XVI on PC is probably happening sometime in 2024, but an early 2025 release might also be a possibility. The game received a somewhat mixed reception on PS5, so it will be interesting to see if it finds a new audience on PC. I personally quite enjoyed the game, so I think it deserves it. Wccftech’s Kai Powell agreed in his full review…
“In many ways Final Fantasy XVI heralds in a new standard for Japanese role-playing games, and while the RPG components themselves are limited by Square-Enix standards, it's the narrative and gameplay that exceed all expectations. What begins with kingdom-wide subterfuge and destruction ends with a world forever changed. [...] Nothing short of a technical marvel, Clive Rosfield and Torgal are among some of the best character action duos and their 70-hour epic across Valisthea will forever be remembered in Final Fantasy XVI.”
Final Fantasy XVI can currently be played on PS5. Anyone out there planning to give the game a try once it finally arrives on PC?
