We’ve known for some time that Uncharted creator Amy Hennig was working on a Marvel project at her recently-founded Skydance New Media studio, and in fact, she teased a World-War-II-set game featuring Captain American and Black Panther back in 2022. Well, today at Epic’s State of Unreal Engine 2024 GDC livestream, the curtain was fully pulled back the game, which is officially title Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
The debut trailer for the game features stunning French WWII backdrops and look at Captain America and Black Panther, who will be played by Drew Moerline and Khary Payton respectively, but it’s just a cinematic. Or is it? After the trailer aired, Amy Hennig took to the stage, and it was revealed the trailer consisted entirely of in-game realtime visuals running on the newest version of Unreal Engine 5. You can check out the trailer for yourself, below.

Here's a how Amy Hennig describes 1943: Rise of Hydra…
“We're creating a story-driven, World War II era, Marvel action-adventure game with an ensemble of playable heroes. But, here's what's important to note -- people might not think this, but this isn't some custom demo that we made just for this show. That's our game. All the sequences you just saw in that trailer are all pulled right out of our game, running real time in Unreal Engine 5, no smoke and mirrors.”
To prove her point about the 1943: Rise of Hydra trailer being real gameplay, they then manipulated certain scenes from it in real time using their editor. 1943 is looking to leverage all the latest Unreal Engine 5.4 capabilities, including Nanite, Lumen, and Metahuman character creator, but also newer features like “Adaptive Tessellation” which can create incredibly detailed fine details and ground cover without consuming an excessive amount of processing power, and “Heterogenous Volumes,” which can produce very realistic and dynamic smoke and clouds.
In addition to all the Unreal Engine 5 tech details, we also have some more information on the game's cast and characters.
"Khary Payton plays Azzuri, the WWII-era Black Panther, while Drew Moerlein plays Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Megalyn Echikunwoke plays Nanali, a Wakandan spy embedded in Occupied Paris, and Marque Richardson plays Gabriel Jones, a U.S. soldier and member of the Howling Commandos. Lyne Renée plays Julie, a key ally in the French Resistance, and Joel Johnstone rounds out our cast as Howard Stark."
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is coming sometime in 2025. Platforms have not been announced, and I’m having a hard time imagining what hardware will even be able to run a game this good looking. I guess we’ll see!

Today’s AAA games require a lot of storage, and typically, they only get bigger post-launch as addition content and updates are applied. So, it’s somewhat surprising to report that Forza Motorsport – which launched at a very-meaty 130-GB-plus -- is actually shrinking in size with its latest patch. Forza Motorsport Update 7 will see the game’s file size reduced by around 25 GB on Xbox Series X and 29 GB on PC.

While Microsoft has tried to put a happy face on things, the future of Xbox – at least Xbox as a distinct brand with its own hardware and exclusives – has never been more in question. Last month Microsoft tried to calm worries with an Xbox Business Update, in which they revealed several older, smaller-scale games were going multiplatform, but that others, like Starfield, aren’t for now. Furthermore, they vowed to continue working on new hardware which will, apparently, deliver the “largest technical leap ever” (how they plan to deliver on that boast, I don’t know).
is an adventure of substantial size, but whether it's possible to keep playing after the credits roll is one question that's likely to come to mind over the course of the game. As an open-world experience, has plenty of side content that could be passed over while racing toward the story's climax. The game's developer Team Ninja included a variety of optional missions in prior games like , so it's no surprise that this element carries over to the more expansive historical setting of Edo in Japan.
Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin has received above-average reviews from several critics before its release. Nevertheless, those who delve into its Bakumatsu-era open-world action RPG will have enough challenging combat to keep them occupied, especially in the post-game.
