2024 has kicked off with a list of bangers ranging from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth to Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, and as excellent as those games are, I'm growing increasingly desperate for more bite-sized titles to maintain a varied gaming diet. And Castaway, an upcoming indie that bills itself as a "short and sweet adventure" and looks like a perfect tribute to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, feels like just the thing.

Following the game's PC release yesterday, PlayStation's Ghost of Tsushima is off to a good start on PC.

Activision has announced the establishment of Elsewhere Entertainment, a new internal studio headquartered in Warsaw, Poland, with additional resources in the United States. It is “exclusively focused” on creating a new “narrative-based and genre-defining AAA franchise.”

Sea of Thieves sails into uncharted waters on 30th April, when the formerly Xbox-exclusive pirate simulator catches stranger tides and arrives on PS5. In terms of performance, it will offer parity with the Xbox Series X version (60fps, 4K), and for those jumping ship or turning coat, Xbox players can transfer their progress and items over to PlayStation.

We’ve known that a Marvel game from former Uncharted writer-director Amy Hennig has been in the works for years, learning in 2022 that it will focus on Captain America and Black Panther during World War 2. Thanks to a proper reveal during today’s State of Unreal event, we now know that it’ll be called Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and we’ll be able to play it sometime in 2025.

We’ve known for some time that Uncharted creator Amy Hennig was working on a Marvel project at her recently-founded Skydance New Media studio, and in fact, she teased a World-War-II-set game featuring Captain American and Black Panther back in 2022. Well, today at Epic’s State of Unreal Engine 2024 GDC livestream, the curtain was fully pulled back the game, which is officially title Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.

We finally learned the title of the Captain America and Black Panther video game that former Uncharted creative director Amy Hennig is making at Skydance New Media. It’s titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra and will come out sometime next year. This was all revealed during Epic Games’ State of Unreal presentation at GDC 2024.

Long time PlayStation veteran Connie Booth has been hired by EA to lead its studios.

Those itching for a new Jak & Daxter probably won’t have their enthusiasm sated by Sony’s emulated PS5 and PS4 re-release of Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier – but it can’t hurt, huh? The game, originally released in 2009 by High Impact Games, was first conceived by Naughty Dog, but due to its focus on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortunate at the time, it handed the project off.

From becoming a staple name in the 3D platformer genre with Crash Bandicoot to creating one of the most beloved stories in video games with The Last of Us, Naughty Dog is without question one of the biggest and most respected names in game development. Jumping from genre to genre with each major franchise it creates, the team’s now-iconic paw print logo has become synonymous with huge productions, heart-wrenching storytelling, and characters that transcend the medium.

God of War on PC just hit an important milestone that would have seemed extremely unlikely 6 years ago when the game launched on PS4: it’s now available DRM-free via GOG.com (and it’s half-off at $24.99 for the rest of the month, to boot). The title has joined an impressive group of other PC games that were once exclusive to PlayStation consoles — all of which are completely free of DRM (digital rights management), software that is typically used to prevent piracy and mods. Currently, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection are each discounted, as well.

Looks like Microsoft’s decision to port live service Xbox exclusive Sea of Thieves to PS5 is unlikely to land the company in choppy waters, as the title is currently making a charge on the PS Store’s pre-order charts. At the time of typing, the Rare sailing escapade occupies several spots on PlayStation’s upcoming best-sellers list, including the number one position above heavy hitters like Dragon’s Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Sony has confirmed that «some» unannounced games in development within PlayStation Studios have been cancelled as a result of the decision to lay off around 900 employees. In a separate article from Hermen Hulst, it's explained: «We looked at our studios and our portfolio, evaluating projects in various stages of development, and have decided that some of those projects will not move forward.»

Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann doesn't think he will be in the business of making video games forever, at least not at the scale we would expect from the storied creative. He is best known for his work on both Uncharted and The Last of Us; in fact, it was the experience of adapting the latter for HBO, something he «really enjoyed», along with moving into a stage of life where «your kids are number one», which prompted thoughts of a sea change.

The sprawling open world action/adventure game Ghost of Tsushima is basically the only big PlayStation franchise other than Gran Turismo that hasn't made it to PC yet. Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Horizon have all been ported to PC. What's most puzzling is that even more recent games have been ported; for instance, Horizon Forbidden West, released in February 2022 for PlayStation consoles, will launch later this month on PC. Ghost of Tsushima, on the other hand, launched in July 2020.

The President of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, recently sat down for an interview with the rapper Logic to discuss their career trajectories and their plans for the future.

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann started at the company as a gameplay programmer for Jak 3 and X: Combat Racing 20 years ago, but quickly rose in the ranks, serving as co-writer for several of the Uncharted games and as creative director on both The Last of Us titles.

Good news Uncharted fans, the sequel finally has a script. Mark Wahlberg, who brings treasure hunter Nathan Drake's frequently facial-haired friend Sully to life in the 2022 video game adaptation, has revealed he recently got a call from Sony telling him to "start growing [his] mustache". 

The eternal churn of online scuttlebutt continues apace, and this time, our old pal Nathan Drake is said to be coming out of retirement. According to XboxEra's Nick Baker and John Clarke, the very first game in the series — Uncharted: Drake's Fortune — might be in the running for a PS5 remake.

Naughty Dog recently released Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II, a two-hour documentary delving into the creation of the mammoth sequel. Full of in-progress footage and stories from development, It's well worth watching, and you can do so for free on YouTube. In its closing moments, Neil Druckmann says he has a concept for a third game, and while that's exciting, it's very likely the studio will release something else beforehand.
