As an open-world experience, has plenty of side content that could be passed over while racing toward the story's climax. The game's developer Team Ninja included a variety of optional missions in prior games like , so it's no surprise that this element carries over to the more expansive historical setting of Edo in Japan.
One question surrounding 's replayability is actually answered well before the end, as completing the first chapter reveals a way to start revisiting some past content. This comes in the form of the Testament of the Soul, a tome that makes it possible to replay past missions and make different choices. The Testament of the Soul isn't the only way to extend the gameplay experience, however, and making it to the end provides a look at further possibilities for spending time in Edo.
The biggest post-game feature of lies in the addition of the Midnight difficulty level, which ups the already challenging combat to the level that Team Ninja veterans might be itching for (and seriously intensifies the Public Order camps). Completing missions on Midnight puts Masterwork gear on the table, which is the highest rarity available in the game. This function is essentially the same concept as Way of the Strong from, with Masterwork gear likewise being the equivalent of Divine equipment.
As far as completing side quests goes, the Testament of the Soul makes it possible to return to prior content through the level select whenever something gets left behind. Once the post-game content is unlocked after completing, it's possible to stick to standard difficulties or Midnight when revisiting prior missions, so there's no need to worry about the intensified difficulty becoming a mandate. All of this will still count toward 100% completion, making focusing on the main story the first time around a comfortable proposition even for completionists.
There's also a little bit of new content after finishing This comes in the form of Ally Missions, which also offer an intense challenge for those who have already mastered the base game, along with a new skill tree called Breakthrough to add to the standard options of Strength, Dexterity, Charm, and Intellect. Breakthrough offers more direct stat boosts than other trees as well as making it possible to learn the weapon styles of the character's Blade Twin.
