What exactly can Xbox Series X/S and PS5 owners expect from Dragon’s Dogma 2 in terms of performance? It’s been an open question, with answers being surprisingly hard to come by – at first, we heard it might be targeting 30fps, but analysis of footage seemed to indicate that wasn’t necessarily the case. Capcom stepped in to say the game would have an “uncapped” framerate, which… didn’t exactly clear things up.
Well, with the release of Dragon’s Dogma 2 just weeks away, it seems we finally have a definitive answer. According to a Game Informer interview with Dragon’s Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno the game will both have uncapped framerate and target 30fps on XSX and PS5. It seems like the game will also lack multiple visual modes on consoles…

"The game has an uncapped framerate. We're aiming to go at around or higher than 30 FPS. That is for consoles as well. There are some functions that you can turn on and off, but there aren't multiple sets of options that you can change at once [likely alluding to visual presets seen in the options of other games on consoles today]. But yeah, the frame rate will come uncapped for all consoles."
That doesn’t sound… terribly encouraging. Usually if a game targets 30fps, developers at least attempt to lock that 30fps down so players can look forward to consistent performance even if it isn’t as smooth as it could be. Some new previews of Dragon’s Dogma 2 have gone live, and as indicated by IGN’s video, framerate does indeed hover around 30fps on PS5 but can drop to the 25fps range.
So yeah, if you’re looking for performance, PC may be the place to play Dragon’s Dogma 2, although it should also be mentioned that all of Capcom’s PC hardware recommendations also target 30fps so you may need to a pretty beefy rig if you want to play the game at high framerates. It seems like Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be one that benefits from upsampling tech – thankfully, DD2 supports DLSS 3, although we don’t know if players will also be able to use FSR or XeSS.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on March 22. What do you think? Willing to play at an uncapped 30fps? Or are you waiting to upgrade your PC or that rumored PS5 Pro?

If I were to write a list of all the things that made Skyrim special, it’d be as long as The Elder Scrolls themselves. Considering that’s a massive waste of parchment, I can boil Skyrim’s magic down to one word: dragons. Few games have recaptured the thrill of Tamriel’s wyrms crashing down from the sky to interrupt an otherwise run-of-the-mill fetch quest. But I’ve got good news: that very same sense of awe, terror, and excitement fuels Dragon’s Dogma 2, a game where a towering cyclops can unexpectedly emerge from the forest’s edge, or a terrifying drake swoop down from on high, all in unscripted, emergent moments.

is already known to feature a map much bigger than the original game but not even the developers can agree on how much the space has grown. While the first boasted an expansive open world for players to explore at their will, it was also criticized for feeling empty and barren given the vast amount of space players needed to traverse to reach major locations. Capcom has confirmed that the sequel is looking to fix this issue by not only expanding the map but also including more interesting landmarks to discover.
Capcom and director Hideaki Itsuno’s vision for the original Dragon’s Dogma was to develop a purely single player experience that, through the use of its AI-controlled companions known as Pawns, would emulate the feeling of an MMORPG with other players. The upcoming, long overdue Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to expand on its predecessor in a number of ways – from a larger open world to how much content it’ll offer and much more – but that focus on delivering a purely single player experience isn’t changing.
If it weren’t obvious already, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a big game. Capcom has discussed how the world is four times larger than the original and the sheer amount of side content, which some may players may end up skipping. However, when speaking to Automaton-Media, director Hideaki Itsuno revealed that it may actually be much larger than initially announced.
From newcomers like the Mystic Spearhand and the Trickster to returning favourites like the Fighter and the Warrior, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to offer a number of different Vocations for players to play as, each offering a completely different play style. Unlike the first game, however, in the sequel, each Vocation is going to be much more limited in what it’ll be able to do, in that each of them will generally specialize in a single weapon type.
Much has been said about Dragon’s Dogma 2, especially with new previews and a free Character Creator going live last week. However, the scale of the experience is still relatively unknown, especially given that the world is four times larger than the original. Speaking to Automaton-Media, director Hideaki Itsuno discussed certain feats possible on current-gen hardware.
During the recent Capcom Highlights showcase, one particular quote from Dragon's Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno caught everyone's attention. He stated: «Over 1,000 characters inhabit the world [of Dragon's Dogma 2], each with their own unique stories and motivations.» That's a lot of NPCs.
