Capcom has responded to Dragon’s Dogma 2 players who have criticised the game’s use of microtransactions as well as performance issues on PC.
While the game received glowing pre-release reviews, following today’s launch it has had a ‘mixed’ reception on Steam, where just 40% of over 9,300 user reviews are positive.
Players discovered on Friday that there are 21 separate DLC purchases available on day one. Disappointment appears to stem from the fact that some of them are for things that players feel should be easier to obtain in-game for free.
Players have also complained about performance issues, and the inability to start a new game.
In a message published on Steam, Capcom said it has “received numerous comments from the community” on these subjects. “To all those looking forward to this game, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.”
On the subject of microtransactions, Capcom noted that “all the items listed below can be obtained in-game or as paid DLC”.
Capcom also said it’s investigating critical problems such as crashes and freezing, which it plans to address “in the near future”.
Regarding frame rate issues, it said: “A large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and calculating the impact of their physical presence in various areas. In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate.
“We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future.”
And it said it’s looking to introduce a feature that enables Dragon’s Dogma 2 players to restart the game on Steam. “We will announce more details as soon as we can.”
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the first Capcom game to be sold at $70 for its standard edition, and last month, the publisher said it would consider releasing more games at this price point given the rise in development costs across the industry.
It was revealed earlier this week that Capcom was Metacritic’s highest-rated publisher in 2023, based on the quality of its releases last year.

If you just started Dragon’s Dogma 2, it might have come as a shock that this sprawling open-world, role-playing epic is missing one common feature: fast travel. Well, it’s not quite missing, but it’s extremely limited in ways that run counter to the normal rhythms of this hugely popular genre.
Microsoft’s head of gaming has discussed what he’d like to see in a potential Xbox handheld.
If I were to write a list of all the things that made Skyrim special, it’d be as long as The Elder Scrolls themselves. Considering that’s a massive waste of parchment, I can boil Skyrim’s magic down to one word: dragons. Few games have recaptured the thrill of Tamriel’s wyrms crashing down from the sky to interrupt an otherwise run-of-the-mill fetch quest. But I’ve got good news: that very same sense of awe, terror, and excitement fuels Dragon’s Dogma 2, a game where a towering cyclops can unexpectedly emerge from the forest’s edge, or a terrifying drake swoop down from on high, all in unscripted, emergent moments.
Capcom has detailed some of its planned updates for Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Capcom took to the Steam forums to address Dragon's Dogma 2 player backlash after the game was review bombed. Most of the negative criticism is due to the appearance of several microtransaction items after Dragon's Dogma 2 was released on Steam, including some that jeopardize all the claims that director Hideaki Itsuno and the team have made about the game's intended design.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 has enjoyed a huge day-one on PC, but it has also sparked a vociferous debate about microtransactions.
