Dragon's Dogma 2 has been out and in players' hands for almost a week now, and it's fair to say that although it launched to incredibly positive critic reviews, certain elements haven't been received fantastically by the fanbase. The action-RPG was immediately hit with backlash for its microtransactions, and plenty of people have been left frustrated by the deadly Dragonsplague mechanic, too.

Datamining for Phase 3 of Season of Discovery has unearthed the Infernal Lasso, allowing Hunters to lasso a Demon or Beast for 24 seconds, but also mentioning that Lassoed Core Hounds may be tamed. This is likely a followup of sorts to the ability to tame Wyverns that was added in Phase 1, but if it is linked to a rune in the same way remains to be seen. If that is the case, expect a fairly length quest leading to this item and the ability to tame Core Hounds. This also raises the question of «Where would I tame a Core Hound?». Originally Core Hounds could only be found in Molten Core and Upper Blackrock Spire, but with Infernal Lasso requiring level 50, neither of those would be tameable. Alongside this, the spell Lava Breath has been datamined. This has potential to be a unique ability for tamed Core Hounds, separating them from Wyverns which were effectively reskinned Wind Serpents. Considering that’s a massive waste of parchment, I can boil Skyrim’s magic down to one word: dragons. Few games have recaptured the thrill of Tamriel’s wyrms crashing down from the sky to interrupt an otherwise run-of-the-mill fetch quest. But I’ve got good news: that very same sense of awe, terror, and excitement fuels Dragon’s Dogma 2, a game where a towering cyclops can unexpectedly emerge from the forest’s edge, or a terrifying drake swoop down from on high, all in unscripted, emergent moments.

It's only been a few days since Dragon's Dogma 2 finally launched, and despite receiving some incredibly positive critic reviews and breaking records for Capcom on Steam, it's not all been smooth sailing. There's been backlash over the microtransactions on offer, and now, there's also mass panic over the existence of a deadly plague that can result in the death of all the NPCs in a town.

With an often tremendous sense of freedom, players can choose where they go, what they do, and how they tackle challenges. The world exploration is filled with fantasy tropes, towering castles, mythical creatures, magic systems, and epic quests, where the joy of discovery is a major appeal. Players can wander through enchanted forests, stumble upon hidden dungeons, or climb mountains; there's always something new to find around the next corner.

The fastest way to get Renown in Plunderstorm is to kill other players, and win. But what if you're like me: A big scaredy cat who's terrible at PVP? I maxed out my Keg Leg's Crew Renown days after Plunderstorm was released without winning once. More importantly, I enjoyed myself while I did it. So here are some of the best strategies to earn Renown even if you can't survive most fights to save, well, your life. On average, I make 400-800 Renown a match. Sometimes if I'm lucky, I make over 1000. On more than one occasion, I've even reached level 9 and made over 1000 Renown — once even making it all the way to second place — without defeating another player in the entire match. Obviously this is nowhere close to the 3000+ Renown you can make from winning a match, but if you don't enjoy, or aren't good at, PVP, that doesn't mean you have to slowly chip away at 40 levels a tiny bit at a time.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is very unique, even among others in the genre, for not adhering to a lot of traditional design philosophies, such as how it handles fast travel. How do you unlock all vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2? Vocations are basically character classes, and they determine how your Arisen, and your pawns, function in combat. Each vocation has its own weapon and armour requirements, while boasting unique attacks, skills, and perks that define your style of play.

Ahead of (or maybe alongside, we're not sure) the release of its second expansion, Final Fantasy 16 will be getting a free update that includes some rather positive-sounding changes. Patch 1.30 was detailed during the developer's PAX East panel, so we've gone ahead and sorted the additions and improvements as bullet points:

The expanded open world of Rise of the Ronin is so big that not even a trusty horse and fast travel systemare quite enough to make traversal as fun and fast as needed. While it might seem a little fantastical, you won’t complain about the inclusion of a glider once you get your hands on it and feel how freeing it is to soar above the rooftops and countryside. This has been a heavily marketed mechanic, and yet you can miss your first chance to get it if you don’t explore a little before moving on with the main quest. Dragon’s Dogma 2 takes an unorthodox approach with many of its gameplay systems, from its reliance on slow travel to its loss gauge system that punishes players for dying repeatedly. Another aspect of Capcom’s game that’s similarly onerous is it save system. Dragon’s Dogma 2 bucks tradition when it comes to player choice concerning saves — there’s no save scumming in this role-playing game.

Your Vocation defines your role in combat in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Everything from your skills to what weapons and armor you can use is tied to this class. You will pick from just a handful at the beginning of the game, but can easily change Vocations later on, as well as unlock more than twice as many new options than what you start with. It can take a while to really get a feel for a Vocation and how it performs in combat, as well as to look through all of its skills and augments, before knowing if it’s worth sticking with to level up. Personal preference will play a part to some degree, but these Vocations have the most potential to make you the strongest Arisen in history.

One lesson you will learn very quickly in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that your Arisen isn’t built to carry as many materials as you want it to. On a single trek through the world, you will be snagging fruits, herbs, monster parts, ore, weapons, and more. All that weight adds up fast, and you only need to go over half your weight limit before seeing negative effects. Sure, your pawns can shoulder some of that burden, but even then, you will need to start leaving things behind. There are no backpacks or stats you can increase to increase your carrying capacity, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. You just need to look in a different place.

The price of the Meta Quest 2 has been all over the place in the past two years. In 2022, Meta raised the cost of this VR headset from $299.99 to a shocking $399.99 due to component shortages. Then the price sank to $249.99 in late 2023, just after the company’s $499.99 Quest 3 came out. Now, it’s sitting cozy at $199.99 at multiple retailers, with most of them offering some sort of freebie with your purchase that’d otherwise cost you an extra $50 or so. I don’t foresee the cost sinking below this and, frankly, it doesn’t need to; the Quest 2 is a phenomenal value at this price.

Getting around the massive map of Capcom’s RPG sequel can feel like a chore if you’re not in the mood to walk everywhere. Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

There’s a lot to see in Baldur’s Gate 3, but you’re not going to get far without a few good companions by your side. Thankfully, you’ll stumble upon a wide assortment of NPCs that’d love nothing more than to accompany you on your journey. These friendly faces fill several different roles — from mages and healers to archers and warriors, there’s bound to be a companion that augments your playstyle.

Much like its predecessor, Dragon's Dogma 2 doesn't hold your hand most of the time, leaving you to figure out what to do to complete quests yourself.

Upon reaching Renown 5 with the Keg Leg's Crew in Plunderstorm, Dragonflight players also unlock a new vendor in Valdrakken offering a limited amount of mid-level crests and a single Bind-on-Account cache containing normal Amirdrassil loot! To unlock, simply play Plunderstorm until you reach Renown 5, and the next time you log into Dragonflight, you should automatically be prompted with the quest, A Keg-Stamped Package. Heading to the Valdrakken inn, you'll see a few new NPCs in the corner, where Da'kash Grimledger, Plix Sputtermouth, and Polly Roger have taken up residence. Turning in the quest will grant you 15 bind-on-account Keg-Stamped Coin, which can be mailed to any character on your Battle.net account. Da'kash Grimledger will then have a new vendor option, selling:

So, it’s quite novel to boot Dragon’s Dogma 2 up and find that the title screen doesn’t seem all that interested in telling you that this is a sequel.
