The devs at Creative Assembly have had a rough time of it recently. Back in September, the studio was blindsided by the sudden cancellation of its upcoming live-service shooter Hyenas, barely two weeks after it had concluded an open beta and one month after an appearance at Gamescom. The result was layoffs, uncertainty, and now the studio is going to attempt to pivot back to what it knows best: real-time strategy.

Sega has a new financial report that, like so many companies in the industry, discusses layoffs and project cancellations. Creative Assembly, as noted in the report, saw in-development FPS Hyenas canceled in large part over concerns that the team wasn’t up to running a live service FPS long-term.
As we’ve seen many times over the last several years, gaming companies, especially leading consoles and content publishers, are working hard to develop their libraries so that they can put out as many games on as many systems as possible. Or put their best titles on their systems exclusively to bring people into the fold. While SEGA isn’t a console maker anymore, they are still cranking out software at an impressive rate, and they’ve been making acquisitions too that can help them in the future. For example, you might recall that they bought the mobile gaming giant Rovio, which has gotten some higher-ups to think big with their franchises.
Fans excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 got a nice little tease today. Sonic Superstars launched on October 17. Super Mario Bros. Wonder launched three days later, on October 20. Both 2D platformers went up against each other in an old-school video game rumble that rekindled memories of the Sega versus Nintendo playground battles of the 90s. Well, it seems this time around, there was a clear winner.

UK developer Creative Assembly will refocus on making real-time strategy games following the cancellation of online extraction shooter Hyenas.
Multiplayer shooter HYENAS was in development at Total War and Alien: Isolation studio Creative Assembly for quite some time, and Sega was clearly positioning it as a major tentpole title in its lineup of upcoming titles. In September, however, the company announced that the game had been cancelled, leading to layoffs at Creative Assembly. Now, in the aftermath of HYENAS’ cancellation, the Japanese company says that Creative Assembly will go back to focusing on development of strategy games.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth features the biggest map in the Yakuza franchise. Marking the series' first venture outside of Japan, the upcoming title will transport players to the tourist hotspot of Hawaii — Honolulu City, to be exact. Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio claims that the vast new stage is more than three times the size of Yakuza: Like a Dragon's Isezaki Ijincho, the suburb where the afro-haired Kasuga Ichiban was introduced. That means, the Hawaii map is nearly nine times the size of the Kamurocho district, the series' primary Japanese setting punctuated by shops, restaurants, and nightclubs, where we dabbled in action-packed illicit acts through the eyes of Kazuma Kiryu, the series' main protagonist who keeps getting pulled back into the life of crime.
Being born late into the ‘80s, the Atari 2600 was an intriguing mystery to me. By the time the N64 hit, the NES felt old to me, so the idea of a console even older than that was exciting. This was before you could jump onto YouTube to look up gameplay. I wanted to see it for myself.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has revealed fresh new details on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the next mainline entry in the series. It’s set in Honolulu City, Hawaii, and a new tweet says the location is over three times bigger than Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama. While it sounds absurd, it does explain the eighth title being the series’ longest yet.

When a game you KNOW will come out eventually hasn’t come out in years, and there’s very little confirmation as to what it will or will not be, you’re going to have plenty of people almost “too eager” to look for clues or hints as to what might come next. Atlus fans are not happy with how Persona 6 has seemingly been “sidelined” by various spinoffs of the 5th entry, alongside the remakes of past games. While it’s true that these have all “served a purpose” in one form or another, gamers really want that 6th entry, and they want it sooner rather than later.
Official Sonic the Hedgehog artwork that's just been shared on Sonic Channel has shown off a version of Doctor Eggman that somehow has access to a Super form after using the Phantom Ruby.

This Sonic Superstars discount over at Amazon has quickly become one of my favorite Black Friday gaming deals so far. But here it is, one of the best Sonic games in the modern era available at Amazon for just $34.99 (was $59.99) on PS5, Switch, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.

There are many reasons why fans are excited about Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The first is that the previous game in the franchise wasn’t just a success. It helped redefine what this franchise could be. Second, the game was wacky in the best way, and fans couldn’t get enough of what Ichiban and his allies could do in combat and beyond. Third, the game promises to take things to the next level based on its new location and plot. Finally, the reveal trailer for the game was hilarious, and they’re curious to see what hijinks Ichiban and others will get into as they play the game.
In addition to new details on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s combat, including the new Smackdown feature for weaker enemies, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has also discussed the Job System. Each character has an exclusive Job now, with Kiryu’s being the most unique.

Last night's episode of pro wrestling show AEW Dynamite featured a match called the "Like a Dragon Gaiden street fight presented by Sega," and folks, it was even wilder than that name suggests.
Though Atlus has yet to officially confirm that Persona 6 is in development, there’s very little doubt in the minds of most people that work on the series’ next instalment is indeed underway, with leaks even claiming that it will launch sometime in 2025. Whenever it does launch, though, Atlus’ parent company Sega believes the series has the potential to see much more impressive sales under the current circumstances.
It’s always ironic when a game that had superior success to anything that came before isn’t almost immediately followed up by a sequel confirmation or a sequel that arrives a few years later. In the case of Atlus, fans have been waiting for YEARS for the arrival of Persona 6. After all, the 5th entry didn’t just do incredibly well; it helped redefine the RPG genre in certain ways and got eyeballs on the franchise like never before! Not to mention, it was nominated for a slew of awards, including Game of the Year in 2017! So the fact that the 6th entry isn’t here yet, almost seven years later, is mind-boggling.
Sega's gracing our news pages a fair bit today. Firstly for being the subject of unfair labour practice allegations by its unionised workers, and now for, ah, talking up the possibility of films based on the Persona and Yakuza series. A bit of an awkward transition, but you play the hand you're dealt.
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name launched worldwide last week, and the brawler has got off to a solid start in Japan where its physical sales are concerned. As per the latest weekly data revealed by Famitsu, it was the best-selling game of the week when its PS5 and PS4 sales are put together, even though Super Mario Bros. Wonder is still in the No. 1 spot with over 65,000 units sold.

The success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has led to Sega wanting to explore other ways to bring its most popular IP to consumers. Of course, movies are still on the cards. Aside from the big screen, the company is investigating a variety of ways to breathe new life into its classic characters, be it through mobile adaptations of games or collaborations within existing titles.
Japanese games giant Sega is apparently looking to expand its operations.
Sega is targeting more acquisitions and not looking to sell up, despite interest from “many” companies.
Sonic has been enjoying renewed popularity in recent years thanks to the two Sonic the Hedgehog movies that have become some of the highest-grossing video game adaptations. Sega hopes to capitalize on this by bringing more of its franchises to a non-gaming audience.
Earlier this evening, wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) teamed up with Sega to promote upcoming game Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, in the wildest possible way. They got together some of the nerdiest wrestlers possible and put on a Like a Dragon-themed street fight complete with heat actions, improvised weapons, and cosplay. And it absolutely ruled.
On the heels of the success of its Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Sega revealed that it would like to adapt more of its franchises into movies. Sega COO Shuji Utsumi, speaking with CNBC, mentioned Persona as well as the Like a Dragon franchises as potential targets for movie adaptations.
After the mega success of its Sonic movie adaptations, Sega says Yakuza and Persona don't have to just be video game series.
Sega has said it’s keen to expand the reach of its biggest franchises beyond video games.
It’s not surprising when we hear about a studio being acquired. That has been a trend for a little while now. Sony and Microsoft have been acquiring studios, and it was just Microsoft recently that developed a massive purchase. Microsoft made the purchase to acquire Activision Blizzard. Now, this was no small feat. It cost them an enormous amount of money. After dealing with regulators, the deal finally went through. But through these regulators and court hearings, tiny bits of information surfaced from behind closed doors. One of those dealt with Sega. A company that has been around for ages and even offered a console competitor for a time.
From Yakuza/Like a Dragon and Persona getting Xbox releases to several of its major titles being day one Game Pass games, Sega has had an excellent relationship with Microsoft in even years, to the point that the Japanese company was even one of several being eyed by Microsoft as an acquisition target. And with the industry caught up in an acquisitions race in general, whether or not Sega is a company that will also get snapped up by a larger group is a question that’s been asked by many.
Film adaptations of Sega franchises like Persona and Yakuza/Like a Dragon are a possibility, the company has said.

The PC requirements for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth are now available via Steam, and they’re a step up from its predecessor, Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Perhaps the biggest change is that the sequel requires 82 GB of installation space, whereas the latter needs a maximum of 60 GB. With Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio proclaiming it as the longest game in the series, it does make sense.
Board games and video games go hand-in-hand for a lot of very obvious reasons. If you like playing one, then there's a very strong chance you'll like playing the other. That's why there tends to be a lot of crossover between the two worlds. Video games based on board games, and famous video game characters making the leap to your tabletop. Sonic will be doing a little of the latter in 2024 via Sonic Roll, a board game based on the original series of games created by Kess Entertainment.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will be a «monster-class game» longer than any previous game in the series.
There is always going to be a question about “how long video games should be, and everyone will have a different answer to things. Some will say that if they’re “too long,” people won’t finish them, and that can be true depending on the game and the player. But don’t tell Atlus that, okay? In contrast, if a game is “too short,” many people may think they’ve wasted their money, which is not what anyone wants. So, with SEGA and the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, you might be surprised that this spinoff title will be the longest game in the franchise so far.
People can’t seem to agree on whether or not they want their games to have a gargantuan amount of content, but the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series has usually been one to consistently deliver meaty, lengthy experiences. And though the recently-released spinoff title Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name was obviously a shorter game than most of its siblings, the series’ next mainline instalment, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, isn’t going to follow suit.
At first blush, I considered Persona 5 Tactica an unnecessary encore for the Phantom Thieves. They already got a sequel inPersona 5 Strikers, and a definitive edition that doubled as a gut-punch farewell in Persona 5 Royal. Moreover, Atlus has begun to place its attention on remakes and remasters of the series’ older games, while slowly passing the torch to the likes of Metaphor: ReFantazio and the eventual sixth Persona installment. The deeper I dug into Tactica, though, the more convinced I became that the Thieves’ message can still resonate — even if it’s still mired in the same poisonous tropes.
A new Sonic board game is on the way, with players co-operating as Sonic and pals to defeat Eggman.
In the late 1980s, toy company Hasbro was adding to its slew of entertainment offerings with games like Battleship. Video games were still treated with suspicion by much of the general public, but Hasbro started pursuing a different kind of interactive experience: a movie that could be influenced by audience decisions. In the process, while attempting to make a nonviolent family game that could be enjoyed by nearly everyone, Hasbro helped create some of the creepiest vampires in video games — and the star of the 1993 U.S. Senate hearings meant to address violence and video games.
Atlus and Sega have released a new trailer for Persona 3 Reload. Continuing its recent series of trailers where it showcases the game’s companions and Social Links, the newest trailer showcases Koromaru, and you can check it out below.
Jurassic Park is cracking open the amber of some of the 8 and 16-bit console games based on the dinosaur movie franchise, bringing its NES, SNES, Game Boy and Genesis outings to PC next week. Fingers crossed, the anniversary return of the series’ earlier video games might lead to some of its overlooked adaptations getting their chance in the spotlight. In other words: when will Trespasser finally get the respect it deserves?
I can’t be the only person getting tired of hearing about all these live service games. Call me selfish, but I really wish it’d just stop.
