I imagine that somewhere out there, there’s a battle royale for game developers, each team fighting tooth and nail to acquire the best licenses on which to base a game. Amongst the sand and the blood, you’d have to imagine that Dreamworks Animation would be one of the most prestigious licenses out there, teams climbing on top of their fallen compatriots to reach it. But, as you stand there clasping your prize you realise that there’s too many options. What exactly do you do with the Dreamworks license? Seemingly, the answer is to make a kart game.

It wasn’t easy, but I’ve become the Great King of the Hittites as Kurunta the Usurper, named after the hunter god. Many soldiers died along the way, but all for a good cause. Leaders were assassinated as I worked my way up the Hittite court. Now over 100 turns of Total War: Pharaoh later, I had united the Hittites—united in a conquered sort of way—and it was time to set my eyes south towards Egypt.

It’s pretty wild to consider the ground the Total War franchise has managed to cover since its inception. With the introduction of the fantasy-focused Warhammer trilogy, and the theatrical Three Kingdoms, developer Creative Assembly has brought its massive strategy franchise to whole new audiences. However, with the exception of the remastered Total War: Rome, this has left many long-time fans of the franchise yearning for a return to Creative Assembly’s historical roots. While Total War: Pharaoh is more grounded than its supernatural cousins, and deploys a slower overall pace, its attempts to bridge accuracy and accessibility leave its Bronze Age campaign and combat feeling a bit dusty when compared to its larger-than-life counterparts.

Developer Creative Assembly has created a solid game with Total War: Pharaoh . It explores the challenge of taking on the role of a leader during the Bronze Age collapse. Would-be rulers can choose their leader from three factions: Egyptian, Canaanite, and Hittite. While the aesthetics and gameplay are fun in several ways, the overall package could be better. I have played multiple leaders now and have spent most of my time with Ramesses (Egyptian), Bay (Canaanite), and Irsu (Canaanite).        

There are only so many ways you can conquer the ancient world before it gets a bit predictable, but if you’re thinking Total War Pharaoh is just more of the same, Creative Assembly Sofia has a few surprises for you. Sure, it leaves most of the long-running strategy series’ key tenets unchanged. However, it builds on them in smart ways and makes the best use of any Total War game’s historical setting.

has been a return to the franchise's roots, with a smaller, more stealth-focused title set in a stunning recreation of Baghdad in the year 861. The title tells the origin of Basim Ibn Ishaq, a character who was introduced in the franchise's last title,, by which time he was already a Master Assassin on his travels to Norway​​​​​.

To be blunt, Assassin’s Creed Mirage was designed by the team at Ubisoft to be a kind of “rewind” for the series. Many fans had noted that recent games featuring Vikings, Spartans, and Egyptian Warriors were great, but they had a scale to them that made the titles feel overwhelming. Thus, the new title wouldn’t just take place within the “roots” of the franchise but scale down things to help the gamers feel more “at ease” within the setting. They would also do a more “refined” story and focus on gameplay elements so players could be the “ultimate assassin.”

Lomography often looks back to the early days of photography for its steampunk-styled art lenses. Its latest, the Nour Triplet V 2.0/64 Bokeh Control Art Lens, follows suit, and is available for order today via Kickstarter. The all-manual lens looks like something out of the 19th century on the surface. Inside its optics leverage spherical aberration control to produce three distinct looks from a single lens. It's an intriguing concept, and another entry in a chorus of off-kilter lenses that give photogs a reason to give up modern conveniences like autofocus, for snapshots that you just won't get with lenses that strive for technical perfection.

I’ve never been great at math, but Doom plus Indiana Jones seems like an equation for success. In the 30 years since Doom’s release, we’ve seen hundreds, perhaps thousands, of total conversion mods, from the excellent Brutal Doom to the cerebral and scary My House. Now, the defining PC FPS from id Software gets a dose of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, as an enormous Doom mod casts you in the role of a Stetson-wearing treasure hunter blasting his way through Mesopotamia and Egypt. If you’ve been waiting on a new Indiana Jones game, like for example the one from Bethesda, this will more than tide you over in the meantime.

Set in a pulp adventure 1932 where secret societies seek to use magic to reshape the world, The Lamplighters League combines a strategic campaign layer with real-time stealth and tactical combat to deliver a twist on the tactics genre that's fun, but doesn't do anything too radically new. It took a bit to grow on me, with a really slow start to get through, but once it gets up to speed this sometimes absurd, always entertaining pulp story is a blast that plays through to a memorable finale.

If you've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Total War: Pharaoh next month, on 11th October, there's a bit of bad news — for some purchasers, at least: developer Creative Assembly has announced it's delaying the title into «early 2024», but only on the Epic Games Store.

If you’re planning to play Total War Pharaoh this year, your options have just shrunk, as developer Creative Assembly confirms the strategy game is delayed into 2024 on the Epic Games Store. The team says the change has been made because more time is needed to integrate “additional social functions,” and notes that all pre-orders made via the Epic Games Store have been canceled.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is returning to its roots with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage, launching on Xbox, PlayStation, and Windows PC on Oct. 8. You can currently pre-order the console versions of the game from Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, or GameStop. If you plan to pick the game up for PC, you can reserve a copy through the Epic Games Store.

The world of AC is absolutely teeming with vibrant characters and it's brought fans into close contact with a range of bygone eras from Ptolemaic Egypt to Victorian London. In the fall of this year, the popular franchise is going to be taking us back to basics with the stripped-down and narrative-driven Assassin's Creed Mirage.

There’s a lot to love about open world gacha game Genshin Impact, but one of its most consistent elements is its soundtrack. So popular is the PS5 and PS4 game’s score that HoYoverse recently announced a series of global concerts, which will see the release’s music performed by live orchestras around the world.

We all love a good historical game, don’t we? Games that are both educational and entertaining in equal measure. Of course, there’s a LOT of them out there and they can be incredibly difficult to sift through, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to narrow them down to 30 games.

While has somewhat split audiences between those who think it's an amazing space exploration title and those who find it underwhelming, it can't be denied that there are numerous Easter eggs and hidden minor details that most miss upon the first playthrough. Indeed, there is a lot to do in the Settled Systems, so it's easy to miss clues that give way to a deeper meaning and a more significant narrative. These clues can be hidden in random items strewn across the universe or via audio files that can be randomly found across the in-game worlds.

After a few quiet weeks, things are picking up in the gaming industry as we move into the autumn. In fact, whisper it, but today marks 100 days until Christmas!

Tintin imaginatio, Microids and Pendulo Studios have announced that Tintin Reporter: Cigars of the Pharaoh will be coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on November 7. A Nintendo Switch release is also planned for release in 2024.

Total War: Pharaoh , by Creative Assembly, arrives on October 11th. Players will have the chance to take on the role of a leader from one of three different origins: Egyptian, Canaanite, or Hittite. The time period chosen by the developers focuses on the Bronze Age collapse of Ancient Egypt. The preview build I had access to was limited to choosing the Ramesses campaign; the progress ended after 50 turns, and the game build was a month old. Given those limitations, I still enjoyed my time with the game as I am a fan of this time in history, and this rendition of Ancient Egypt was fun to explore.    

Developer Creative Assembly and publisher Sega have announced that Total War: PHARAOH will be released on PC on October 11. The game will be available early—on September 29—for those that pre-order the game.

Death always caused problems in the ancient world. If a long-lived and competent ruler died, you could bet that after a few generations you’d end up with someone either incredibly incompetent, an insane tyrant, or a contested lineage and power vacuum. Needless to say, that would pretty much inevitably lead to out and out civil war.

Ramesses II, who was born a civilian, inherited Egypt’s throne as a teenager, fought several prolonged conflicts with the Hittite empire, warded off pirate incursions along the Mediterranean coast, and navigated a political court marred by betrayals and petty grievances. He was also the victim of the first recorded military ambush ever. Basically, his job sucked!

With the past few games in the series it's felt like Assassin’s Creed has lost a little bit of what made it so special back when it launched in the late 2000’s. Don’t get me wrong: Odyssey and Valhalla were extremely solid RPGs that offered a vast and unique setting and a definite bang for your buck in the runtime department, but there’s something about those games that didn’t necessarily feel necessarily “Assassin’s Creed” due to their hefty open-world settings and heavy RPG gameplay mechanics. Thankfully, the next installment in the franchise is Mirage, and based on my playtime with it so far, it manages to capture what made the series so special and brings the social stealth history simulator back to its roots in the best way possible.

Ara: Story Untold was originally announced at last year’s notE3 Xbox Games Showcase, but the game has been missing in action since then. Until now, that is. THQ Nordic have announced Titan Quest 2, a sequel to Iron Lore Entertainment's action RPG of 2006, which was kind of a classical variation on Diablo with players touring Ancient Greece, Egypt and China in search of chthonic beasts to slay. The new game is the work of Grimlore Games, creator of Spellforce III and one of THQ Nordic's first internal development studios.
