Well, that wish has come true, but you won't find it on any PlayStation hardware. Batman: Arkham Shadow is a VR title exclusive to Meta Quest 3, releasing at the end of 2024. A string of videos have surfaced online that show glimpses of a canceled Batman game, which was later transformed into 2014's Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. The available footage shows some combat gameplay as well as traversal mechanics that would have appeared in the scrapped Batman title.

Monolith Productions, the team behind Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, had a Batman game in production that was ultimately canceled by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive.

The Lego train never stops, but it does run a little faster on the first of every month. Lego kicks off each month by releasing some of its more notable sets, usually its officially licensed creations, and even though it's Easter Monday, April 1 is no different. WB Games Montreal, the studio behind Gotham Knights, could be assisting Monolith Productions with its upcoming WonderWomangame — at least according to a newly discovered job listing. WB Montreal is already well familiar with the DC Universe, having helped Rocksteady with Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition for the Wii U in 2012 before releasing Batman: Arkham Origins the following year. Its next gaming venture took it outside of the Arkhamverse with Gotham Knights, a spiritual successor that shifted the focus toward the other members of the Bat Family as they carried out the mission of defending Gotham City after Batman’s death.

Back in 2022, Vera Drew’s highly personal, incredibly irreverent stylized memoir movie The People’s Joker made a splashy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival — in that immediately after its premiere, DC Comics’ parent company, Warner Bros., filed a cease-and-desist order against the movie, shutting down all subsequent screenings and throwing the movie’s future into doubt. It’s taken years for the film to see the light of day, outside of the occasional festival screening. I saw it at the 2023 Fantastic Fest, where Vera Drew was present to talk about the experience, but was careful not to address the question of whether her film might ever get a real theatrical run. But now, according to the poster, it’s “coming soon. Legally. Seriously.”

WB Games Montreal is now looking for a Creative Director to help with an upcoming AAA game supposedly based on a popular franchise. Warner Bros’ gaming division has had a mixed output over the past year or so. Hogwarts Legacy became one of the highest-selling games of 2023, and Mortal Kombat 1 was quickly hailed as an excellent installment in the long-running fighting franchise. On the other hand, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League ultimately fell short of Warner Bros Discovery’s expectations at the beginning of this year.

A Destiny 2 player has brought The Dark Knight of Gotham City to the Last City with a new Batman-inspired custom costume. The player replicated the iconic DC superhero's look using the built-in suite of outfit customization options available in Destiny 2, bringing an approximation of Batman into the ranks of the Guardians.

It was always going to be a tall order for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League to emerge from the shadow of the mighty Arkham series. From an architectural perspective the game has moved from Unreal Engine 3 to 4, while from an art and style perspective think more multi-coloured Marvel comics than a dark DC tome. From the bright sunshine across Gotham City and vibrant greens, reds and purples, each character and enemy stand in stark contrast to the subtle and muted tones of Rocksteady’s prior games. The same wide-open city is available to you early on, and each of the 4 playable characters have their own unique and fast means of travel. However, this presents one of our biggest issues when it comes to performance.

Rocksteady Studios’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is out in a few weeks, with hands-on impressions and new gameplay recently going live. While its post-launch plans haven’t been detailed, the looter shooter will seemingly take a seasonal approach and even return to some familiar locations. What are the best Batman games? Well, there a no shortage of contenders to choose from, because when you think about it Batman is the perfect video game protagonist. Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting alter-ego excels at acrobatic hand-to-hand combat, of course, but he also has access to a wealth of high-tech gadgets and, beneath the cowl, is a detective at his core. Take all of this into account, and you have the blueprint for a decent adaptation of DC Comics’ so-called Caped Crusader.

As announced at NYCC today, a new line up of Elseworlds comics is on the way from DC with Batman and Green Lantern getting new out-of-continuity tales in 2024. Dark Knights of Steel and DC vs. Vampires are also set to get sequels. 

Gotham Knights leads the pack of new titles coming to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium game catalog, this month. Starting October 17, all higher-tier PS Plus members can hop onto their Batcycles and ride around the streets of Gotham City, beating up all kinds of volatile criminals in the hopes of unmasking the enigmatic Court of Owls. Players can switch between Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and the Red Hood throughout the story to investigate Batman/ Bruce Wayne's death, and build out their character via a gear system. Gotham Knights wasn't nicely received at launch due to a myriad of performance issues across console and PC, in addition to having a repetitive gameplay loop. It will be available on the PS5 only.

While it’s hard to picture nowadays, there was a time when video games featuring superhero characters weren’t the best. The exception was in fighting titles, as they could at least be expressed in a certain way through them. However, when Rocksteady Studios revealed they were making a unique title with Batman, people were curious. By the time 2009 came around, it became one of the most hyped games of the year, and it delivered. Its sequel later delivered in 2011, and now, in 2023, the Batman Arkham Trilogy will soon arrive on the Nintendo Switch. We know this as it was confirmed to be coming on October 13th.

It’s a little ridiculous that, nearly seven years into the Nintendo Switch’s life, we’ve still not seen Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham trilogy release for the platform. Better late than never though, because that will be changing soon. In June, WB Games announced that Batman: Arkham Trilogy would be coming to the Switch this Fall, and now, a specific release date has been announced.
