After a winter barrage of award shows — the Emmys, the Golden Globes, the Grammys — the grandaddy of them all, the Academy Awards, are around the corner. The 96th Oscars may be a coronation for “Oppenheimer,” which comes in with a leading 13 nominations, though other films, including “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” are in the mix.

This Sunday will be the 96th Oscars, or Academy Awards, presentation. While many people are, of course, interested in seeing what movie will win the coveted Best Picture, there is a lot of excitement regarding the Animated Film category this year. Studio Ghibli's film The Boy and the Heron has been nominated alongside Western-produced English-language films, which has anime and Ghibli fans around the world excited about the possibility of an anime movie winning an Oscar (and not even in the foreign film category).

It was yet another big night for Larian Studios, as Baldur's Gate 3 won big at the DICE Awards 2024. Winning in five categories including Game of the Year, this success meant that Larian got another chance to take to the stage and make an acceptance speech, using the opportunity to comment on the state of the industry.

While there were a ton of winners, Baldur's Gate 3 walked home with Game of the Year alongside Best Role-Playing Game and Outstanding Achievement awards in Story, Game Direction, and Game Design.

At this point last year, I'm not sure even Baldur's Gate 3 early adopters knew what an absolute behemoth of a game it was going to turn into. It's made an ungodly amount of money, swept award shows like it was nothing, and has gone down as one of the greatest and most beloved RPGs ever made. To really drive home that fact, Baldur's Gate 3 recently passed the half a million mark for user reviews on Steam.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been awarded a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, a rare nod from the more established mainstream award industry. If I were to invent a genre name for Trepang2, beyond being a first person shooter, I would call it a FEAR-like. It’s immediately clear that it’s very strongly influenced by that series’ whole schtick. It’s got more slow motion gunplay and supernatural creepiness than you’ll know what to do with, and then it throws in the ability to go invisible for good measure. Why not, right?

There were plenty of hints along the way, and even some leaks by the leading man himself, but it was only made official at the Game Awards 2022 that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is on its way. Coming from the same influential and creative mind as the original, as well as the Metal Gear franchise before it, Hideo Kojima introduced the game himself. Of course, nothing about Kojima’s games are straight forward, and what was revealed about Death Stranding 2 probably raised more questions than it answered.
