Samsung today received a new accolade, as its current-generation 7-inch foldable display has successfully passed the highly stringent military standard ‘MIL-STD 810G’ test that the U.S. Department of Defense recognizes. Also known as the American ‘Military Specification’ (MilSpec), several parts are evaluated and then taken through a series of tests to see if they qualify for this certification. Despite a foldable panel being less durable than a flat counterpart, it is impressive to see that this rating has been officially awarded to the Samsung camp.
Samsung’s 7-inch foldable panel is already being used in its current Galaxy Z Fold 5, and should be repurposed for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6
As reported by The Elec, Samsung had requested UL Solutions, a global applied safety science institute, to verify the durability of its 7-inch foldable panel. To receive the ‘-STD 810G’ certification, products or other components need to pass tests based on temperature and shock that are typically encountered in daily life scenarios or when performing specific outdoor activities. A Samsung Display official has described how the 7-inch panel was tested.

In the shock test, a total of 26 experiments were conducted, involving people who fell from a height of 1.22 meters, which is the height at which their owners use the majority of smartphones. The company official stated that there were no problems with the product during outside activities, particularly during the gravity acceleration test, which is one of the most challenging parts of the MilSpec standard.
With around 1,800 foldable patents applied for and registered in the U.S., Samsung’s head of marketing team, Cho Yong-Seok, has said that the aforementioned figure is four times that of global competitors, and thanks to the latest certification, it is confirmed that Samsung has a strong technological edge against its rivals.
The latest MilSpec rating also means that Apple has one less excuse to give on why it is not pursuing a foldable iPhone launch. Hopefully, we will find out the real answer when such a device finally materializes. For now, Samsung should be given credit for pushing the boundaries of foldable smartphone technology and improving the durability of their displays.

Apple has a decent foldable product portfolio in the works, but when it comes to an actual launch, many reports talk about varying timelines.
