Paradox Interactive has announced it is parting ways with BattleTech developer Harebrained Schemes, citing «strategic and creative priorities». The seperation follows last week's news that Harebrained Schemes' The Lamplighters League has been a $22m flop for Paradox.

Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes have announced that the two companies will be parting ways. This comes after Paradox expressed disappointment with the performance of The Lamplighters League. Paradox had acquired the company in 2018.

When I was a young League of Legends player, I used to be so excited by Blue Essence, clutching at my mouse every time I levelled up, hoping I’d have enough BE to pick up Janna, who had been on free rotation the previous week. Game preservation is one of those topics that we keep returning to with greater and greater frequency. In a week like this, and a year like this, it's not hard to see why. Marvel's Avengers, a mega-budget game that still feels relatively fresh, is being delisted, while Hyenas, which looked weird and rather brilliant, has been cancelled before it's even been released. It's heartbreaking, and my thoughts go out to everyone affected. People are losing their jobs and others are seeing their work forgotten. There's also a sense we're going to see more of this and more often. Hollywood is making movies that people will never see and TV shows that people will never binge, while brilliant people are giving huge and valuable chunks of their lives to make games that people will never play. It's terrible stuff.

We live in a time of exceptional video game quality and abundance: There’s always too much to play (especially as I type this in September of 2023). So it’s all the more surprising that The Making of Karateka, which focuses on a game from nearly 40 years ago, totally captivated me. Part classic game collection and part documentary, wrapped in an interactive historical experience, The Making of Karateka follows the true story of a teenager’s path to publishing a hit video game in 1985. And the story is a good one. While Karateka is not a particularly fun 2D-fighting game to play, exploring its story in this weird and wonderful package is very much so.

NBA 2K24 continues down the path the series has been taking for a long time. It takes a few more steps toward capturing the real on court action in digital form, making some more realistic tweaks to the gameplay, but at the same time it remains mired by almost everything off court. I’ve previously called out how virtual currency (VC) is chipping away at the NBA 2K experience, and that has not changed in NBA 2K24.

It’s a whole new split in League of Legends, meaning new ranked goals, and, with those, a whole new climb. While once ‘Legends Never Die’ was echoing in my mind, now my evenings are spent hunched over my keyboard, grinding though match after match to try and relive the glory days of my early League of Legends career. If you too are struggling to attain your deserved rank in the MOBA, I have good news for you: Riot may be making the ranked climb easier going forward.

While gamers are eagerly waiting for the GTA 6 release date from Rockstar Games, some die-hard fans have gone ahead and created drawings of characters that may get featured in the new game. One such avid fan, Hossein Diba, has drawn an image of the first female character in GTA 6. Perhaps most noteworthy for its depiction of extreme gore, Mortal Kombat has gone down as one of the best fighting series in all of gaming. But it must be tough to watch all that violence and take it seriously, especially if you’re a trained professional.

After making several memorable appearances in The Wheel of Time season 2’s first four installments, the Prime Video series’ Seanchan invaders finally take center stage in episode 5, “Damane.” They make the most of it, too, showing off everything from their culture and politics to their fashion over the course of the episode’s hour run time. What’s more, “Damane” also hammers home what Wheel of Time’s second season has already made abundantly clear: The Seanchan are a major threat, and one whose motivations hit closer to home than your standard fantasy army with world conquest in its sights.

Selling 1984’s Karateka on its own today might be a difficult proposition. It was an extremely influential game, and it’s still very entertaining to play today, but it was a pioneer on ground that has since become well-trodden. Typically, this sort of game that was important but largely superseded would be found in one of any number of game collections. But The Making of Karateka is not that.

The first game you play in The Making of Karateka, a release about the making of the cinematic action game Karateka, is an Asteroids clone. It may seem strange, but the attempt at recreating Asteroids was a seminal moment for Karateka creator Jordan Mechner, a humble beginning for a designer who would go on to create some of the most influential action games ever made, including Prince of Persia. The clone appears early on during a long, winding, and interactive timeline, which takes you through Mechner’s early days of experimentation before getting into how Karateka was developed and released.
