The Borderlands franchise holds a peculiar place within the history of the gaming industry, kickstarting a genre that has gone on to become a different kind of beast. After all, though the concept of combining both RPG and first-person shooter mechanics was first seen in 2007's Hellgate: London, the loot-shooter genre owes its popularity to 2009's Borderlands. And yet, today, many of the most popular loot-shooters are also live-service games (like Destiny 2 and Warframe). Borderlands is not, having never adopted that format. It instead has multiple sequels--some of which diverge from the original game and don't feature any looting or shooting.
Like these other live-service game franchises, however, character-driven storytelling has been one of the main unifying pillars of Borderlands, which has been supported by a writer's room. «Gearbox is casually unique in the sense that we maintain a writer's room,» Gearbox Entertainment associate director of narrative properties April Johnson told me. «So we don't just plunk you to work on a project and say, 'Okay, enjoy the two of you doing this--we have multiple things that we are working on, so we won't Voltron up as a full unit until later.'»

Now Playing: History of Borderlands
Having a constant writer's room is a strategy you usually see in story-driven live-service games where maintaining a narrative vision over multiple years--over a decade in the case of some games like Destiny--is important. It's not often seen in AAA franchises that feature several sequels and recruit a new set of writers from project to project. Gearbox Entertainment is not wholly unique in this strategy within the gaming industry, but it is a rare exception and the team points to this as one of the reasons for how the studio has managed to curate a specific narrative voice across all its projects.
«It's a huge commitment from Gearbox as an entity,» Johnson said. «And [Gearbox Entertainment managing director of narrative properties] Lin Joyce and myself are the sort of impresarios of narrative here at Gearbox where it's so vital to have these creative spaces where you could feel safe to be like, 'Hey, I kind of got a little adventurous with this. What do we think?' And [having a place] where you can say like, 'Okay, what if we did this or what if we did this,' and having punch-up buddies and having a place to get rowdy in the

Announced back in May 2021, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has been missing in action ever since. December 2022 was the last time it popped up in the news cycle, with series creator Yuji Horii saying news was potentially coming «soon». We're now closing in on the one-year anniversary of that comment, and obviously, the update never came.
Capcom will release the second DLC fighter for Street Fighter 6, A.K.I., next week. While we’ve seen some of her combos, a new Character Guide video (which also appears in-game) has been released, providing more in-depth information. Check it out below.
While gamers are eagerly waiting for the GTA 6 release date from Rockstar Games, some die-hard fans have gone ahead and created drawings of characters that may get featured in the new game. One such avid fan, Hossein Diba, has drawn an image of the first female character in GTA 6. Do note that this new character is just a rumour and that Rockstar has not said anything officially about it. Nevertheless, the image of the GTA character called Lucia has taken the internet by storm. It looks like the game may finally be making big changes and this is just the beginning.
is an upcoming remake of the classic JRPG that was released over two decades ago. Developed by Gemdrops, Inc. and published by Square Enix, the title intends to stay true to the core pillars of the original while also updating key facets for new players. is slated to release later this fall, introducing a whole new generation of fans to the beloved PS1 game.
Here's one that wasn't on the bingo card: Tales of Arise, Bandai Namco's 2021 RPG hit, is getting an unexpected expansion two years after the game first came out.
For my money, The Nameless Mod (TNM) is one of the best Deus Ex experiences out there. It's a lengthy total conversion mod for the original Deus Ex that transplants the original masterpiece's immersive sim brilliance into a tale set in a Deus Ex fan forum, and it's much, much better than that pitch makes it sound. Richard Cobbett called it «one of the best things to come from Deus Ex, and one of the best single-player mods in general,» in his Crapshoot of the mod, and it just received a huge update 14 years after its original release.
You may have heard about a little space game called Starfield, the gravitational pull from which risks swallowing all games discourse for months and possibly years to come. Perhaps that's no surprise for a game that's been in development and hyped for as long as any title that I can remember (well, ones that have shipped anyway) but it's easy to forget now the thing's in our hands that it was subject to multiple delays along the way.
There are a lot of things that Starfield lets you do, even if its detrimental to your own health. You have to live with the consequences of your actions of course, but there are very few things that the game takes completely off the table. One of those things was getting out of your ship whilst you're flying through space, something that the last fifty years of sci-fi movies and video games warns you not to do.
In an interview with Famitsu, Starfield lead and Bethesda frontman Todd Howard stated that the game's mod support «will be available next year» (obtained via machine translation), which likely refers to Starfield's equivalent to the Creation Kit modding tools for Skyrim and Fallout 4.
Starfield is officially out, and modders have been working hard creating helpful add-ons, from useful, quality-of-life mods such as revamping the inventory UI to unofficially adding support for DLSS. Others have added more cosmetic things like reskin in-game clothes. And then there are some people out there who keep modding Bethesda's Todd Howard into the game.
Many quests in Starfield can be found simply by walking around. Hushed whispers and overheard conversations often act as leads to new activities, and these activities are almost always worth doing. Whilst on New Atlantis you will hear rumblings about trees and a man called Kelton.
