The free PlayStation Plus Essential games for October 2023 have now been officially confirmed, and as previously leaked, subscribers can look forward to supernatural Wild West action, the high-pressure world of agriculture, and--for something slightly less nerve-wracking--cosmic carnage. The Callisto Protocol headlines PlayStation Plus Essential in October alongside Weird West and Farming Simulator 22. These games will be available starting October 3. As usual, all three titles will be available for PS Plus members across the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers of the service.
The Callisto Protocol's arrival is well-timed, as it lands just in time for the spooky season. A spiritual successor to Dead Space--that arrived months before its excellent remake in early 2023--The Callisto Protocol's development was led by the creator of EA's sci-fi horror franchise, Glen Schofield. Unfortunately, the game didn't live up to expectations when it first launched, although recent updates have seen several tweaks, improvements, and new content added to The Callisto Protocol, which was developed by Schofield's Striking Distance studio.
Sadly, the missed sales goals led to layoffs of more than 30 developers at Striking Distance in August and Schofield voluntarily resigned as CEO of the studio. «Though it starts off on a strong note, The Callisto Protocol's focus on action-heavy spectacles fails to adequately explore its horror and overcrowds its weak combat mechanics,» Jordan Ramee wrote in GameSpot's The Callisto Protocol review.
Farming Simulator 22 is exactly what you think it is, but even more detailed than you can imagine. First released in November 2021, this entry in the massively popular Farming Simulator series is all the thrill of commercial farming without having to wake up an ungodly hour or sit down with piles of paperwork. The game sold more than 1.5 million copies in its first week alone, just to give you an idea as to how big its reach is.
Weird West is a fascinating reimagining of the Wild West, one where gunslingers can battle each other and deadly monsters prowling the frontier. Characters, factions, and locations will react to your decisions, and often, the game will force you to make a tough choice that has major ramifications on your journey.
If you haven't claimed them yet, the September PlayStation Plus games of Saints Row, Black Desert: Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero are still available until the new slate of games arrive on October 3.

Players can switch between Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and the Red Hood throughout the story to investigate Batman/ Bruce Wayne's death, and build out their character via a gear system. Gotham Knights wasn't nicely received at launch due to a myriad of performance issues across console and PC, in addition to having a repetitive gameplay loop. It will be available on the PS5 only.
