Sony recently announced that the PS5 has sold 54.8 million units worldwide, and while that’s quite an impressive number for a console that’s only just entered the fourth year of its lifecycle, it has missed the company’s internal sales target by quite a bit. Sony has, as such, revised its forecast for total PS5 units shipped during FY 2023/24 (which ends on March 31) from 25 million down to 21 million, and the company is now feeling the immediate repercussions of that.

An earlier rumor was disseminating information that Apple had halted work on its foldable iPhone because there were durability concerns regarding the display. Now, a new update claims that the technology giant is actively developing the device and has actually reassigned some key personnel hailing from the Apple Vision Pro team to work on this new form factor.

You may not be fully satisfied with how PlayStation is running its business right now, but Sony’s bringing home the big bucks all the same. The firm’s gaming division is printing cash, as it shipped a sturdy 8.2 million PS5 units throughout the three-month period ending 31st December, 2023. That’s an increase of 1.1 million year-over-year, and it puts the PS5’s lifetime sales at 54.8 million units to date.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is out next month on PS5, and the game's frame rate has been a hot topic as we creep towards launch. Last month, the rumour mill was in full swing, with social media sources claiming that the title would be capped at just 30 frames-per-second on console — which obviously isn't ideal for an action-heavy RPG releasing in 2024.

We don’t know about you, but it feels like the PS5 has barely broken a sweat yet. Despite being over three years old, the system’s lifespan has been hugely impacted by the pandemic, which has seen its first-party software cadence slow to a crawl and its early years massively affected by hardware shortages. It’s a little odd to hear Sony talk about the system entering the “latter half” of its lifecycle, then.

Console sales are crucial, and Sony will be pleased it’s shipped almost 55 million PS5s to date – but monthly active users are also an important metric for organisations these days. Platform holders want customers to be logging in often, because when they’re engaged, there’s a good chance they’ll spend money on software and add-ons through the PS Store.

One of the more heartbreaking revelations of Naughty Dog's recently released Grounded II: Making the Last of Us Part II documentary was the extent to which unwell The Last of Us fans took their grievances. The worst of it, according to Abby actor Laura Bailey, was «real hardcore death threats», some of which were even directed at Bailey's newborn child.

Blizzard has shared a list of incoming adjustments coming for Season of Discovery. The main incoming adjustments will be a nerf to Starsurge and a Blood Moon Event change to give 30% health to players during the event.

The next instalment in D3 Publisher's insane Earth Defense Force series, Earth Defense Force 6, has been hit with a delay here in the West. Previously, the madcap shooter was locked in for the 14th March, but now it's targeting a somewhat vague summer 2024 launch. A bit of a shame, seeing as the game's been out in Japan since 2022!

I'm ending a week packed with Steam Next Fest demos on a high note with Gatekeeper, a top-down bullet hell roguelike clearly inspired by Risk of Rain. Pick a character, drop into a medley of environments, and shoot dudes while hoovering up items until the number stops getting bigger. Take-Two Interactive has an interesting response to gamers upset with what the company does with the in-game currency they buy. In an ongoing dispute over whether money is essentially stolen when a game’s servers shut down, Take-Two characterized in-game virtual currency as “fictions created by game publishers.”

Over the last year, artificial intelligence (AI) space has been humming with activity and new innovations. Revelations have been coming at a fast and furious pace and the latest one is by Meta Platforms chief Mark Zuckerberg. While every tech giant is bringing new AI tools and experimenting with large Language Models (LMMs), Meta has been developing its own AI capabilities without really looking to steal the spotlight away from the likes of OpenAI, Google or for that matter Microsoft. Now, in the latest announcement, Zuckerberg revealed Meta's AI efforts being directed towards bringing advanced and easily accessible technologies for users to benefit from. Highlighting Meta's upcoming plans to expand its AI efforts, he said the company will be exploring the capabilities of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and probably, and the technology will probably be open-sourced. The AI race is all about creating technology that can be super-intelligent on its own.

The cutting-edge 3nm process developed by TSMC only had Apple as the sole customer, but with just a couple of days remaining for 2024 to start, the Taiwanese foundry is expected to secure more orders for the second iteration of its advanced node dubbed ‘N3E.’ This will allow the manufacturer to ramp up production, with the latest report stating that the company’s operational capacity is said to jump to 80 percent in the second half of 2024.
