The world wasn’t ready for Tenetwhen it was originally released in 2020. That’s both literally true — it was the middle of the pandemic — and spiritually true, because people were still so hung up on the idea of Christopher Nolan as a puzzle-box filmmaker who wanted his movies solved. But now that people are starting to head back to theaters, and Oppenheimerhas clued audiences in to Nolan’s earnestness, maybe it’s finally time to appreciate Tenet for the vibey friendship-movie masterpiece it is. With the movieheading back into theaters on Feb. 23 for a one-week revival, there’s no better time for the reevaluation to begin.

As with all video game adaptations, there has been some heated discourse surrounding the Borderlands film. Directed by horror icon, Eli Roth, the film struggled through development before finally being slated for release in 2024. Borderlands is based on the widely popular sci-fi first-person shooter of the same name and is admittedly not the easiest property to adapt. The first game is largely considered the weakest, with only a general overarching plot and no emotional character arc. Borderlands 2 is an entirely different matter, and that has a lot to do with the villainy of charismatic dictator, Handsome Jack.

Well the next movie to put that to the test would be Borderlands, and let’s just say it’s received a lukewarm reception so far.

Most tabletop role-playing games place their epic storylines more or less entirely in the hands of the players at the table. Their choices open up a myriad of opportunities and branching paths for their own private games, each presenting a unique experience that changes at every turn. Dune: Fall of the Imperium takes a different approach. Just as in Frank Herbert’s novels — and in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film, Dune: Part Two — House Atreides will fall. Muad’dib will rise, bringing the Jihad with him. The only question asked in Modiphius’ lavishly illustrated new expansion is if you and your house will weather the storm and come out on the other side as a major player in the new galactic regime, or if you will misplay your hand and fall into ruin like so many houses before you.

After just landing the role of the Human Torch in Marvel’s reboot of the Fantastic Four, Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn has lined up another exciting new movie. 

Right off the bat, it should be clear that Borderlands is not an easy game to adapt. The video game series takes place in the colorful world of Pandora, where you play one of a few vault hunters looking for a rumored treasure. Unlike Max’s best new show of 2023, The Last of Us, there is not a clear emotional throughline to follow. In the first game, players can choose from several different characters who rarely interact with anyone they’re not shooting at. Borderlands 2 is where the franchise hits its stride as you fight a malicious — if hilarious — dictator.

Marvel fans think they've spotted a Deadpool variant in the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine – and given that we've already seen not one, but two Deadpool variants in the behind-the-scenes photos...anything is possible.

One of the bigger stories to come out of 2023’s Toronto International Film Festival was Bertrand Bonello’s science fiction movie The Beast, a dizzying, surreal story about a woman, Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux), reliving three past lives as part of a process to purge her memories and emotions. In each of these lives, she encounters Louis (George MacKay of 1917 and Marrowbone) in a series of emotional relationships that lead in dangerous directions. Critics’ responses were split between strong positives and dubious negatives, but they seemed to agree that it’s a remarkably image-driven, idea-packed film that’s sensual and challenging. The comparison to the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas seemed obvious, too, given the separate but linked stories of people echoing across time together.

Madame Web may only just be swinging into theaters, but Spidey fans will already be keen to know when it might be landing on streaming platforms. The latest Spider-Man offshoot follows Cassandra Webb (played by Dakota Johnson), a New York City paramedic with clairvoyant abilities. After foreseeing a terrible event, she finds herself thrown on a path to protect three women from a murderous adversary.

You might've noticed that one of the four Helldiver voices sounds suspiciously like a certain webslinger who also calls the PS5 home. You'd be right - they're voiced by none other than Yuri Lowenthal, AKA Spider-Man.

Is Mark Ruffalo in Captain America 4? Well, the actor seemed to accidentally confirm he'd be appearing in the upcoming fourquel, but that has been swiftly debunked. 

Zawe Ashton, who played The Marvels villain Dar-Benn, has revealed that the MCU movie had an alternate ending – in which Captain Marvel seemingly died.

Madame Web might be the most shameless superhero movie of all time. Far from just the cash-in that it seemed like a few years ago when this movie headlined by an F-tier superhero was first announced, Sony’s latest Marvel offshoot is a two-hour post-credits scene, made only intermittently tolerable by Dakota Johnson’s underappreciated knack for comedy.

Earlier this month, IGN revealed that Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones, Breaking Bad) and five others had been cast in Sonic 3. Many assumed that she would be playing Rogue or Amy, introducing new animal friends to the film universe. However, according to Daniel Richtman who leaked Ritter's involvement before the announcement, she's a human character called Captain Rockwell.

The first reactions to Madame Web are in – and they're not all that positive. 

Iconic actor Mads Mikkelson will not be returning for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, creator Hideo Kojima has confirmed, with the tragic tale of his character, Cliff Unger, having been resolved in the original Death Stranding.Kojima confirmed the news on Twitter in response to fan inquiries about the star returning.

The third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is due to close out 2024, but before then comes a TV show spin-off. Simply named Knuckles, the short series focuses on the powerful echidna, introduced in the second film and voiced by Idris Elba. You can watch the brand new trailer above.

Before she crafted the icy horror of True Detective: Night Country, showrunner Issa López made her mark with a wrenching horror fable about children facing off against human traffickers. Released in 2017, Tigers Are Not Afraid would become the writer-director’s calling card, a bleak horror-fantasy that established López’s knack for atmosphere and revealing characters via the things they dread. It also broke my damn heart.

When Spike Jonze’s oddball fantasy movie Being John Malkovich was first released back in 1999, people weren’t sure what to make of it. While the film was well-received, garnering praise for its “endearingly nutty” and “brilliantly inventive” writing, it also left viewers confused about what to make of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, at the time known solely for his work on TV comedies like The Edge and The Dana Carvey Show.
