It's looking increasingly likely that Gearbox Entertainment is going to be sold by Embracer. In a town hall with staff earlier this week, CEO and co-founder Randy Pitchford reportedly told staff that a decision had been made regarding the studio's future, with more details to be shared in March.

The first photos showing off the upcoming Borderlands film have been released.
The feature film, which is written and directed by Eli Roth, is based on the video game series developed by Gearbox and published by Take-Two.
Scheduled to hit cinemas on August 9, 2024, it stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap.
The first images of the film, which are viewable above and below, were originally published by People.
“Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas,” reads a synopsis of the film.
“Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot.
“These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”
Explaining why a Grand Theft Auto adaptation is seemingly unlikely to be announced anytime soon, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently said the company was taking a highly selective approach to bringing its properties to film or TV.
“We have licensed two properties, we’ve licensed Borderlands to Lionsgate, there’s a picture coming, we’ve licensed BioShock, we’re looking forward to that as well,” he said in November. “And we have other titles in discussions, not anything ready to announce. But we’re going to be very, very selective, and very careful.”
In February 2022, it was announced that Take-Two had partnered with Netflix to produce a live action film adaptation of BioShock, which is set to be directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, The Hunger Games).

Directed by horror icon, Eli Roth, the film struggled through development before finally being slated for release in 2024. Right off the bat, it should be clear that Borderlands is not an easy game to adapt. The video game series takes place in the colorful world of Pandora, where you play one of a few vault hunters looking for a rumored treasure.
