PlayStation Plus' monthly free games for January 2024 — the new year — have been revealed. The month's offerings include narrative-focused period adventure title A Plague Tale: Requiem, top-down dungeon-crawling action RPG Nobody Saves the World, and third-person vampire-hunting shooterEvil West. The three titles will be available to members of PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe/ Premium plans, starting January 2. These games can be added to your PS4 and PS5 games library until February 5, after which you'll have to hold on to your PS Plus membership for continued access. If you enjoy any of these titles, you could purchase them for permanent access and continue from where you left off.

Today, Sony announced the PlayStation Plus games lineup for January 2024. Subscribers across all of the tiers (Premium, Extra, and Essential) will be able to add a trio of great games to their libraries, including Asobo Studio's A Plague Tale: Requiem, Flying Wild Hog's Evil West, and Drinbox Studios's Nobody Saves the World.

2023 has not been a great year for the video game industry in terms of layoffs and studio closures, and as the year draws to a close, it’s been announced an entire publisher with dozens of games to its name is closing its doors. Versus Evil had become a bit of a rising star in the indie publishing sphere in recent years, publishing the likes of the Pillars of Eternity games, The Banner Saga, Tower of Guns, Faeria, and more. Unfortunately, that success was not enough to keep the publisher’s doors open.

Versus Evil, the indie publisher perhaps best known for games like Stoic's The Banner Saga trilogy and Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, is shutting down, with former employees saying parent company tinyBuild has laid off the entire team.

2023 is very near its end, but the bad news for the videogame industry keeps on coming. Just three days before Christmas, TinyBuild has laid off all staff at indie publisher Versus Evil and shut it down.

Versus Evil, the indie game publisher behind Stoic Studio’s The Banner Saga and Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity, announced Friday it was shutting down after a decade in business. Versus Evil’s entire staff has been laid off just days before Christmas — and the day after Atari announced a $2 million investment in Versus Evil parent company tinyBuild.

Unfortunately, the rough year of 2023 for the games industry continues. Indie Publisher Versus Evil announced on Twitter today that parent company TinyBuild has shut down the company and laid off all the staff. Head of Production Lance James confirmed the closure on Twitter as well.

I should not need to tell you just how good the remake of Resident Evil 4 is, but if you really need a refresher go read our 10/10 review or appreciate the Best Remake award that we just gave it. Suffice to say it’s a brilliant game, but is it a brilliant game played on PSVR 2?  Well yes… and no.

TinyBuild, the games label behind the Hello Neighbor series, has laid off the entire staff of Versus Evil, an indie publisher under the TinyBuild umbrella, just days before the holidays. This news comes from various former Versus Evil employees on Twitter. 

Versus Evil announced its own closure on social media today.

Resident Evil 4, the acclaimed 2023 remake of the survival horror classic from 2005, is now available on the iPhone 15 Pro and select iPad and Mac models. The game released on compatible Apple devices on Wednesday. While RE4 is listed for free on Apple's App Store, accessing the full title would require in-app purchases. RE4 remake originally release for PC and consoles on March 24 and received critical acclaim for the visual and mechanical improvements it brought to 2005's Resident Evil 4. The remake also earned three nominations at this year's The Game Awards, including the top prize for Game of the Year.

Resident Evil 4 is out now on iPhone 15 Pro, as well as iPads and Macs running on M-series chips. The game supports universal purchase on Apple’s platforms, which means that players only need to buy the game on one of the platforms to be able to play it on other devices as well.

I'm just now getting to know Minthara in Baldur's Gate 3—both on my evil necromancer playthrough and my Honour Mode run, where I intend to pick her up from Moonrise Towers after risking my neck to knock her out. Still, I've cast off the shackles of spoilers after completing my first playthrough—gleefully getting my mitts on whatever details I can about my future drow bestie—which makes this a good point to mention that there'll be spoilers for Minthara's full plot line below. In a recent interview with IGN, Larian CEO Swen Vincke and co-lead writer Adam Smith discussed her character arc and the nature of evil, and they come to a conclusion I find genuinely fascinating: Minthara may grow to adore her compatriots, but she's still evil with a capital E. «She has this very unexpected story where she does soften,» says Smith, «and you see her learning how to deal with being part of a group.» However, Smith's keen to point out that her story «is not a redemption arc.» Minthara's tenderness, Smith implies, is a facet of her character from the get-go that you slowly discover—not something the player creates for her. Another surprising revelation is that Minthara can actually question why you slew the tieflings at the grove if you went full murder with it—even if that was the only way to recruit her until recently. "[Minthara] says, 'Okay, so now I'm not hearing the voice of The Absolute anymore … I killed all those tieflings, it's because I was brainwashed. What is your excuse?'" He goes on to point out that if you just reply 'cause I'm evil', she actually really dislikes that.

After launching in March earlier this year for multiple platforms, the 2004 survival horror classic Resident Evil 4 Remake is now available for purchase for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with various Mac and iPad models. The game can be purchased through the App Store, and as an added bonus, Apple device owners get an immediate 50 percent off on the main game. Fortunately, there is plenty of time to decide on your purchase because the discount ends on January 17.

The Resident Evil franchise is quite a massive one. Players worldwide have sat through these incredible survival horror video games. However, it wouldn’t be anything if it wasn’t for that first title release. Sure, looking back at that original release now it’s pretty dated. Fortunately, there have been remakes that have given the game a massive overhaul today. But looking back at this cherished IP, the man who took on the director role for the first game was Shinji Mikami. Today, we’re finding out that Shinji wouldn’t be interested in returning to the franchise.

Look, I don’t need to tell you how great Resident Evil 4 is. You’ve either already played the original 15 times by now in any number of its various re-releases over the years, or were delighted to experience it for the first time with the phenomenal remake earlier this year (which IGN awarded our highest recommendation). There was even a VR port of the original that came out just two years ago. But now, on top of it all, there’s a PlayStation VR 2-exclusive VR mode for Resident Evil 4 Remake, raising the question of whether it’s worth going back for yet another run through this horror classic from a different perspective. The answer may not at all surprise you! Yes, as it turns out: if you take an amazing horror game and give it a similar VR treatment to that of fellow residences of evil Biohazard and Village, it’s still amazing (and often even more chilling) in true first-person. But it’s also an imperfect port, with some finicky controls and tons of jarring cuts into third-person since, equally unsurprisingly, a remake of a game that first came out 17 years ago pretty clearly wasn’t designed with virtual reality in mind.

Resident Evil 4 being nominated for several categories at The Game Awards 2023 shows that remakes are still very much in vogue. It seems evident that we should never forget the classics. And that’s exactly what this one modder is doing with the original RE2.

Resident Evil 4 on the PS5 has gotten a major update, bringing VR Mode to the game. Owners of the PS5 version of the game can now play Resident Evil 4‘s VR Mode through the PlayStation VR2. A demo for the VR Mode is also out now on the PlayStation Store.

(And for PS VR2 owners yet to play RE4, a free demo drops the same day.) 

Capcom has announced the long-awaited PSVR2 mode for Resident Evil 4 will be available for free next week on 8th December 2023. You'll be able to play the entire main story from the first-person perspective using Sony's VR headset, and a free PSVR2 demo will go live on the PS Store on the same day for anyone to try out. It'll grant you access to the opening moments of the game. Check out the new trailer above.

Update: Following the leaks overnight, Ubisoft has now confirmed Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition is indeed in development. More news will be shared in early 2024, but the publisher is «dedicated to making it an experience that truly honors the legacy of the original». Ubisoft says the version that got out via its subscriptions service to the point where it was briefly playable was an early build that isn't «indicative of the final game».

Capcom has officially confirmed it plans to continue releasing remakes of older Resident Evil games after the success of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. At the PlayStation Partner Awards, Resident Evil 4 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told Game Watch that the publisher would like to continue developing Resident Evil remakes.

It’s been an eclectic few months for PS VR2. We’ve been flung to the far reaches of space in captivating puzzle adventure Red Matter, explored the evocative sci-fi world of Journey to Foundation, teamed up to capture spooks in Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord,  solved a supernatural mystery in 7th Guest VR, fought monsters in roguelike The Foglands and became a creature of the night in Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice.

Usually when Capcom releases post-launch DLC for its Resident Evil titles, it also goes on to release Gold Editions for those games that includes that DLC as well, with the likes of Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 7, and Resident Evil Village all having received that treatment. Next in line, it seems, is its acclaimed remake of Resident Evil 4.

Fumihide Aoki, the character designer who brought us the legendary Waluigi, has dropped a bombshell on the gaming world today. Aoki designed Wapeach for 2004's Mario Power Tennis and now, two decades later, he's revealing those designs to the world.

Fans have taken up with these remakes, and it’s allowed Capcom to bring out three of them to date. But if you were uncertain if this trend would continue or not, a Capcom developer opted to reveal remakes are not going away anytime soon. 

Fans of the Resident Evil franchise who happen to own a PS5 and a PlayStation VR 2 are about to get a new way to scare themselves in virtual reality. Starting 8 December gamers who already own the Resident Evil 4 remake will receive a free update that adds VR support, Capcom has confirmed.

Which entry will be remade next?

In recent years Capcom has had a lot of success with Resident Evil remakes, with new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 being major critical and commercial hits. Resident Evil 3 was slightly less successful, although it has its fans (I consider myself one of them). That said, the obvious candidates for Resident Evil remakes have all been done now, so will Capcom continue on with them? At a PlayStation event in Japan RE4 remake director Yasuhiro Anpo seemed to indicate there’s more in the works…

Surprise, surprise: Capcom are working on another Resident Evil remake in their successful series of ground-up rebuilds for the survival-horror franchise. As for whether we’ll barrel straight into Resident Evil 5 from this year’s RE4 Remake or jump back to Zero or even, uh, sideways to Code Veronica? They won’t say - yet.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone considering the success Capcom has had with past Resident Evil remakes, but the company has plans for more.

Over the last few years, Capcom has released three Resident Evil remakes, and each of them has enjoyed widespread critical and commercial success (even if reception for the Resident Evil 3 remake was relatively a bit muted). Unsurprisingly, then, it seems the company has every intention to keep pumping more of those out.

The virtual reality modes for Capcom’s recent Resident Evil games are some of the very best VR horror experiences out there — and we’ll soon be able to add the remake of perhaps the greatest Resident Evil game of all time to that list. Capcom has announced that the VR mode for the remake of Resident Evil 4 will be released for PlayStation VR 2 in a week’s time, on Dec. 8.

It’s been confirmed that more Resident Evil remakes will be made in the future, although it’s not currently known which classic horror game will be revamped next.

Capcom confirms that it will launch more Resident Evil remakes beyond Resident Evil 4. This comes after the first three remakes have proven massively successful, prompting Capcom to keep the trend going and bring back more of its older titles.

After the success of the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes, Capcom has confirmed plans to continue the trend, although stopped short of announcing which Resident Evil game is next in line for the remake treatment.

Today, Capcom has officially announced the release date for the upcoming VR mode coming to the remake of Resident Evil 4. Releasing earlier this year, the remake starring Leon S. Kennedy was held in high regards across the gaming world. Now, those with a PlayStation VR2 will have the opportunity to step in the literal shoes of Leon Kennedy to experience the horror first hand, and its sooner rather than later. So much sooner that it will be available as free DLC on December 8. This is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version of the game as the PC version will not have the option for VR, much in the line of Resident Evil 7 and Village (although an upgrade for RE7 would be nice).

The demo for settlement-builder and survival RPG Bellwright got a nice reception at Steam Next Fest earlier this year, racking up enough daily players to sit at the top of the list along with games like Lies of P and Warhaven.

Ubisoft has now confirmed to Eurogamer, that Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is indeed in the works and is due to come out in 2024.
