Twas the What We Played before Christmas, and so we’ve spiced up this edition by also sharing what we’re hoping to have dropped in our laps on Monday morning (depending on which Christmas traditions you adhere to).
I’ve been playing a mixture of things with a little more Baldur’s Gate 3, a return to Vampire Survivors for the daft Among Us DLC, and making my way through Hi-Fi Rush after we decided to award it our Best Gameplay award for GOTY 2023. As for presents? Well, my backlog is daft enough and my gaming habits so out of whack that I’m not hoping for any games. I would quite like Garth Merenghi’s Incarcerat though, because I’ve been enjoying the first book quite a lot.
Aran got the ball rolling this week by talking about Clash: Artifacts of Chaos – “I’m only in the opening stages but it is decent so far. Combat is a bit haphazard but the level design and artstyle is very good.” He’s hoping to have a bumper crop of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI under his tree.
While he’s had a nasty bout of the C-word to get over this past week, Tuffcub has braved it out to pop his PSVR 2 on and play Resident Evil 4 VR and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxies Edge, alongside the flat screen gaming of Destiny 2 and Dredge – which won our Best Independent award for GOTY 2023! He’s jetting off on a fancy Christmas holiday, so don’t expect to hear about his gaming for the next couple weeks!
Having snagged the platinum for Persona 5 Tactica, Nick P’s started playing the Dead Space remake again, as well as Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and he’s still got Street Fighter 6 and Dead by Daylight on the go, of course. He’s hoping for “anything new I haven’t played yet” from Santa, so we’ll see what the jolly fella pulls out of his sack for him.
Sadly not expecting to get any games for Christmas, Gamoc’s been playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and continuing on his new run through Divinity: Original Sin 2. He’s also started The Observer, “which is cool as hell.
Steve’s another one who’s “celebrating” the holidays by having sickness overwhelm him, so lacks the voluminous gamingto share that he usually would. He’s hoping to find a pair of man-sized spiders spinning webs under his tree, which sounds rather terrifying to me!
As we come to the end of 2023, Ade’s finished off one of the best games from 2022. Midnight Suns is “a super Superhero Strategy/Friendship game, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.” It’s probably got some massive discounts in various sales right now. He’s hoping to snag a big pile of books, which if they’re choose your own adventure novels are like video games for the brain.
And finally Dom’s been dipping his head below the surface of Dave the Diver, and having a whale fish of a time with
