This Resident Evil 2 fan remake turns the classic into an FPS

Ever been idly clicking through the Steam store and something causes you to immediately hit the brakes and add a game to the top of your wishlist? That happened to me today while looking at upcoming city builders. There's just something about an isometric city builder with retro pixel art that immediately appeals to me, so Metropolis 1998 grabbed my attention with just a few screenshots.

January’s titles of A Plague Tale: Requiem, Evil West and Nobody Saves the World will be available to PlayStation Plus members on Tuesday, January 2 until Monday, February 5. Resident Evil 4, the acclaimed 2023 remake of the survival horror classic from 2005, is now available on the iPhone 15 Pro and select iPad and Mac models. The game released on compatible Apple devices on Wednesday. While RE4 is listed for free on Apple's App Store, accessing the full title would require in-app purchases. RE4 remake originally release for PC and consoles on March 24 and received critical acclaim for the visual and mechanical improvements it brought to 2005's Resident Evil 4. The remake also earned three nominations at this year's The Game Awards, including the top prize for Game of the Year.

After launching in March earlier this year for multiple platforms, the 2004 survival horror classic Resident Evil 4 Remake is now available for purchase for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with various Mac and iPad models. The game can be purchased through the App Store, and as an added bonus, Apple device owners get an immediate 50 percent off on the main game. Fortunately, there is plenty of time to decide on your purchase because the discount ends on January 17.

Look, I don’t need to tell you how great Resident Evil 4 is. You’ve either already played the original 15 times by now in any number of its various re-releases over the years, or were delighted to experience it for the first time with the phenomenal remake earlier this year (which IGN awarded our highest recommendation). There was even a VR port of the original that came out just two years ago. But now, on top of it all, there’s a PlayStation VR 2-exclusive VR mode for Resident Evil 4 Remake, raising the question of whether it’s worth going back for yet another run through this horror classic from a different perspective. The answer may not at all surprise you! Yes, as it turns out: if you take an amazing horror game and give it a similar VR treatment to that of fellow residences of evil Biohazard and Village, it’s still amazing (and often even more chilling) in true first-person. But it’s also an imperfect port, with some finicky controls and tons of jarring cuts into third-person since, equally unsurprisingly, a remake of a game that first came out 17 years ago pretty clearly wasn’t designed with virtual reality in mind.

At the PlayStation Partner Awards, Resident Evil 4 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told Game Watch that the publisher would like to continue developing Resident Evil remakes.

Resident Evil 4 has maintained a surprisingly vibrant modding community since its original PC release. Mods such as the Resident Evil 4 HD Project even gained traction for their mix of ambition and love for the source material.

Usually when Capcom releases post-launch DLC for its Resident Evil titles, it also goes on to release Gold Editions for those games that includes that DLC as well, with the likes of Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 7, and Resident Evil Village all having received that treatment. Next in line, it seems, is its acclaimed remake of Resident Evil 4.
