If you’re a frequent gamer, by now you’ll have heard of ray tracing and NVIDIA’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), two powerful tools that combine to boost performance in games and provide stunning visual fidelity by replicating realistic lighting and reflections. NVIDIA pioneered these technologies in gaming with the introduction of its RTX 20-Series graphics cards, and in the two hardware generations since then, the techniques and AI hardware behind them have improved considerably. With DLSS 3.5 and a new Ray Reconstruction system working hand-in-hand, ray-traced games can look all the more lifelike and run significantly smoother at the same time. So how do these technologies work?

NVIDIA DLSS 3 has been added to the open world spaceship shooter game Everspace 2 with the major free Incursions update that dropped yesterday, adding new events, legendary gear and catalysts, new treasure boxes called reliquaries, and improved controller support. Developer ROCKFISH has also upgraded the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.3, offering Lumen Global Illumination as an option for high-end PC users looking to improve the visuals.

We see new games with ray tracing and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) all the time, but Black Myth: Wukong is joining a very small list of titles that currently leverage the full suite of features Nvidia has available.

Nvidia just announced DLSS 3.5, a brand new version of its GPU tool that’ll shake up ray tracing in PC games. While DLSS 3 currently helps boost gaming PC performance in terms of frame rate, the next iteration aims to help all RTX graphics card produce better lighting using the power of AI. Better still, the tech is also set to arrive alongside both Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty this fall, giving the update a chance to strut its stuff. 

Nvidia has announced a gorgeous new update to its Deep Learning Super Sampling technology. DLSS 3.5 will drop in the next few months and promises to improve both the look of a final ray traced scene as well as deliver a welcome little performance bump, too. And how is it doing this? Why, AI, of course.

As with Half-Life 2 RTX, Nvidia have taken to Gamescom to make a heap of DLSS announcements. Chief among these is an upcoming new version, DLSS 3.5, which will add to DLSS 3’s existing toolkit of upscaling and AI frame generation with a new trick named Ray Reconstruction. And it sounds pretty clever, if currently limited in application.

Last year, NVIDIA unveiled DLSS 3 with frame interpolation, which used its AI-driven rendering accelerator to add extra frames to games. Now at Gamescom it's introducing DLSS 3.5, which adds Ray Reconstruction, a new feature that will use the company's neural network to improve the quality of ray traced images. It'll be available for all RTX GPUs—unlike DLSS 3's frame interpolation, which only works with RTX 40-series cards.
