Ray tracing is improved with Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5, and it’s cruising to Cyberpunk 2077 this week

CD Projekt Red employees have joined others in the Polish video game industry to unionise after three rounds of layoffs at the Cyberpunk 2077 studio. The unionising developers say their goal is “improving their workplace/industry standards in a way that has legal power and amplifies their voices".

With Cyberpunk 2077 receiving its last major update and its only paid expansion in Phantom Liberty (which sold three million in its first week), CD Projekt RED is looking to the future, specifically Project Orion. Announced in October 2022, the sequel promised to prove the “full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe.”

And the main game has climbed to 25 million copies sold.

Aside from the main storyline of 's spy thriller DLC, the expansion also has several new gigs that V can choose to take on along the way. Gigs are entirely optional but often can provide some good rewards and experience, in addition to providing some colorful backstory and lore for the game. They can often be triggered by entering an area or through story advancement, and are frequently started with a phone call, but they do not need to be completed immediately, so V can circle back when ready.

Nvidia DLSS 3.5, the latest addition to team green’s upscaling suite, has brought us an exciting, new feature calling Ray Reconstruction. Until now, the implementation of Ray Reconstruction in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 has been limited to the taxing RT Overdrive mode, something the majority of GPUs can’t manage. But a new hack promises to bring Ray Reconstruction to the masses.

Cyberpunk 2077 marks the end for CD Projekt's REDengine, the in-house technology that it's been building on since 2011's The Witcher 2. Last year, CD Projekt announced that its next Witcher game and other games going forward—including Cyberpunk's sequel, codename Orion—will be developed with Unreal Engine 5.

When Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC launched, it marked the end of REDengine. The development team has been using that engine for years, and their transition to Unreal Engine 5 also meant that the studio would no longer support Cyberpunk 2077. Instead, this launch expansion was the last of the big new content for the game. Now, the focus is on developing future games through Unreal Engine 5. However, if you thought that this shift was difficult, you’d be surprised. We’re finding out that the transition and the content they learned to develop using REDengine is a bit easier to bring onto the new engine.
