That’s precisely what was going to happen to The Last of Us before HBO picked up a television series.

Neil Druckmann has been there for much of that, and while he’s said he doesn’t know how many more big games he has “in him,” he’s still working on things right now.

The most significant is No Return, a roguelike game mode, but it also includes three Lost Levels, galleries of concept art, new skins for characters and weapons, a developer commentary track for the main game, and a few more odds and ends. Developer commentary piques interest, and its implementation in the campaign is middling, but the Lost Levels, which also include it, are a revelation.

Sometimes, a game has a lot riding against it, and it has to go the extra mile to prove its excellence. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered isn’t in the worst position pre-launch, although it has a steep hill ahead of it to prove why it should exist at all. Staying true to its history, Naughty Dog manages to not disappoint, and delivers a package filled with upgrades and a few surprises. 

The Last of Us Part 2 is still one of the best games ever made.

The Last of Us season 2 has found its Abby in Kaitlyn Dever, confirming previous reports. In a tweet, HBO confirmed that the Booksmart star will be playing the second protagonist — some prefer seeing her as a villain — in the post-apocalyptic series, posing a new challenge to Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey). Interestingly, Dever had a prior connection to the show when fans lobbied the studio to cast her as the 13-year-old Ellie, due to her facial resemblance to the in-game character and her involvement in the Uncharted 4 game — also from developer Naughty Dog. However, co-creator Neil Druckmann and the team opted for a younger actor in Ramsey, who in my opinion, nailed the role.

The fate of The Last of Us Online hung in the balance for a long while, with mixed signals being sent from Sony and Naughty Dog. It all started before the launch of The Last of Us Part II when it was announced that there would be no Factions multiplayer mode like in the original game.

Naughty Dog has announced that it has officially ended development on The Last of Us Online, with the studio explaining that the decision was made so it could continue to focus on crafting the narrative-driven single player experiences it’s known for. The Last of Us won’t be returning to its multiplayer side after all. Naughty Dog confirmed today that it has stopped development on what it’s been calling The Last of Us Online, a multiplayer TLOU experience.

Following reports that development on Naughty Dog's long-awaited The Last of Us multiplayer game had been «slowed down» earlier this year, the studio has announced it's officially pulling the plug on the project, saying it didn't want to become a «solely live service games studio».

The Last of Us Online has been cancelled after more than three years in development. Naughty Dog made the announcement today, arguing that the ambitious project would require the studio to pivot entirely to post-launch support (read: a live service future) rather than their raison d'etre: big budget singleplayer narrative adventures.

The Last of Us blew up in popularity when it first launched, so it wasn’t shocking to see a sequel release. However, some fans were a bit surprised that The Last of Us Part II Remastered is already hitting the marketplace. Despite being released just a few years ago, the remastered edition will likely sell quite a few units. Fans who want to dive into this game all over again might be surprised to see Ellie’s last name. It’s not a massive revelation. There have been a few instances in the past that point towards Ellie’s last name being Williams.

Grand Theft Auto VI was incredibly hyped going into December. We knew this would be the month Rockstar Games would unveil their first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto game. While we finally have the trailer readily available, plenty of reaction videos and content are emerging online to help indicate what we might see in this installment. However, one YouTube channel, Lavkia, compared Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto VI. While it might not be a direct comparison to the map, it will at least give you some insight into what areas of the map might have been expanded.

The first trailer for a video game is important for various reasons. But the biggest one is that it “sets the tone” for the game. Even if it’s just a teaser about what will happen eventually, it has to set a certain style and tone for what fans can expect. The GTA 6 may have had to be released early due to leakers, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a huge response to it! In fact, the trailer had a huge record-setting launch on YouTube and other platforms, and the hype for the game is real despite the fact it’s not coming until 2025.

Grand Theft Auto 6, the latest open-world crime simulator from Table Tennis studio Rockstar Games, got its first trailer yesterday. Perhaps you heard. So far as I can make out, the reaction so far has been a kind of obsessive euphoria, as literally millions of people around the world pore over 90 seconds of footage to pick out details, theorycraft, and plan literal crimes against humanity. 

In June last year, it was confirmed that Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann’s next directorial single player project had entered development, and there’s been plenty of speculation since then about whether that game is going to be a third Last of Us entry. A story outline for a sequel has apparently been ready for a while, and leaks have also claimed that The Last of Us Part 3 is indeed in development– though an actor who has played a major role in both previous titles doesn’t seem to have started working on the game.

The Last of Us is the gift that keeps on giving. Fans looking forward to the game's upcoming PS5 remaster will get the chance to experience a number of previously Lost Levels that will be recreated for the new release.

Following the announcement of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Entertainment Weekly reached out to Naughty Dog's Head of Creative and Co-President (not to mention writer and director) Neil Druckmann to get a comment on the controversial plot that sparked many heated fan reactions.
