But high-quality graphics are far from the only thing players have to look forward to. The Last Of Us Part II Remastered also includes "lost levels"--parts of the game that were previously left on the cutting room floor but will be playable for the first time once the remastered version of the game launches.
«We've pulled back the curtain on the game-making process, presenting [the levels] in their raw and unfinished state,» Gallant says of the lost levels.
The unfinished levels also include developer commentary, giving players a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the game and explaining why certain levels were cut to begin with. The remastered game also features «hours of new cinematic commentary» from some of the game's voice actors, like Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie), Laura Bailey (Abby), and Shannon Woodward (Dina). Additionally, The Last Of Us creator and Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann will be providing commentary alongside co-writer Halley Gross, giving players a look into the creative process behind the game's production.
The Last Of Us Part II Remastered also features an expanded version of the guitar minigame from the campaign via a new mode called Guitar Free Play, which allows players to swap between locations from the game and the characters themselves. Fans of the minigame can now play guitar as Ellie, Joel, and Gustavo, the latter of which is modeled after and voiced by Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed the music for both games in the franchise. Avatar: The Last Airbender fans have every reason to be skeptical of Netflix’s new show. Even if they hadn’t been legendarily burned by a live-action production before, there’s the departure of the original series’ creators for their own sandbox of upcoming animated Avatar efforts.
is a bit of a misnomer. It certainly ups the visuals from the original 2020 release of, but it also provides a fair amount of new content. The most significant is No Return, a roguelike game mode, but it also includes three Lost Levels, galleries of concept art, new skins for characters and weapons, a developer commentary track for the main game, and a few more odds and ends. Developer commentary piques interest, and its implementation in the campaign is middling, but the Lost Levels, which also include it, are a revelation.
Sony is issuing refunds to those who purchased The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered full price by accident, if they have it on PS4 already.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a strange blend. On one hand, it’s a good excuse to revisit Digital Trends’ 2020 Game of the Year selection. On the other, it’s a bizarre package filled with tone-deaf bonus modes that water down the base game’s own message on cyclical violence. Considering that it’s not as much of a “remaster” as its title implies, I wouldn’t blame most players for skipping it.
Naughty Dog is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to graphics.
The Last of Us 2 Remastered's new roguelike mode, titled No Return, was directly inspired by genre greats like Dead Cells, Hades, and Vampire Survivors, according to game director Matthew Gallant.
The Last of Us 2 originally featured a horrifying flashback that was cut from the final game.
