The Thaumaturge exists in an alternate 1905 Warsaw, where I can’t go anywhere without a couple of soldiers trying to mug me for my nice warm boots, and making matters worse, I’m playing an exhausted-looking guy who keeps talking to himself. This RPG world doesn’t have the same immediate appeal as a fantasy realm like Baldur’s Gate 3’s Faerun, but once I start digging, I find a treasure trove of great writing and compelling choices.
The Thaumaturge, a brand new spooky CRPG with Pokemon-like collectible creatures that I will never fail to misspell on my first try, is getting rave reviews on Steam after a successful Steam Next Fest demo.
There are precious few games set in turn-of-the-century Warsaw, and it’s one of several aspects with which distinguishes itself from the pack. This historical dark fantasy RPG is the sophomore release from Polish studio Fool’s Theory, whose 2017 cyberpunk action-RPG echoes the almost irresponsibly bold design decisions and ambitious intentions of their newest project. is a meaty, detailed exploration of Polish history and Western political progress, crafted around a worthy concept that is ultimately more interesting than just “Slavic .”
sparked a lot of reinvigorated interest in the classic isometric RPG style, and a new game called could be the perfect follow-up for anyone itching for me. Generally speaking, the isometric perspective in RPGs goes hand-in-hand with the classic approach of 90s PC entries in the genre, with a focus on deep player choice and branching story possibilities. When paired with modern updates to combat and quality-of-life, it can be an especially potent cocktail.
New week, new videogames, new newsblog. It's another relatively quiet week for big name PC releases - no mega-sequels or adaptations, unless you're seriously into the Moomins - but if 2024 has taught me anything it's that a breakout hit can come from anywhere, and I will accordingly be watching this week's new games with deep suspicion and barely constrained panic.

The Thaumaturge is an upcoming isometric RPG that's caught our eye with its intriguing alt-history setting, concerned with demonic beings called salutors, and coming to PS5 sometime in 2024. It takes place in Warsaw in 1905, and as a Thaumaturge, the player can commune with these dark entities in battle and out against the fearsome Russian Okhrana (the Tzar's secret police), who controls the streets with an iron fist.

When Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt laid off 100 workers in the summer, some staff said enough was enough. Sick of the stress and anxiety caused by the spectre of job cuts, the workers set out to form a union. It was a big idea with small beginnings that has the potential to grow beyond the confines of CD Projekt’s Warsaw headquarters to become Poland’s game developer union, offering a home to all with a valid contract in the country.

The Thaumaturge wouldn’t have caught my eye if I hadn’t familiarized myself with isometric games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, but I am so grateful that it did. Developer Fool’s Theory is heading the story-driven RPG. If you’re a long-time fan of isometric games, you may remember the studio’s name from Seven, another unique twist on the underrated genre. The Witcher producer Tomasz Bagiński has reacted to the ongoing backlash that the Netflix series has faced for changing details from its source material. As many will be aware, the show is based on Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of books. While it broadly follows these, some elements have been changed, which has been a source of ire from some fans.
One of the most common criticisms of The Witcher on Netflix is that it strays too far from Andrzej Sapkowski's novels. It may have been a source of some tension behind the scenes, too: Former series star Henry Cavill made a point of saying he «pushed really, really hard» to stay true to the books, while also claiming that some of the writers on the show «actively disliked» them. There's no question that some aspects of the novel have been simplified for the TV show, and in an interview with Polish site Wyborcza (translated by Witcher fan site Redanian Intelligence), executive producer Tomek Baginski explained why some of those changes were made: "[A] higher level of nuance and complexity will have a smaller range."
Tomek Baginski, executive producer on Netflix's The Witcher, has blamed American audiences and social media sites such as TikTok for the series' simplified take on the books' plots.
