Considering the massive worlds, endless side activities, and propulsive “numbers go up” progression systems of recent Assassin’s Creed games, it can be easy to forget that the series began as a detective game. Assassin’s Creed Mirage seems hell-bent on reminding us.

For some time now, more, more, more has been Ubisoft’s mantra for each new Assassin’s Creed. More content, bigger worlds, deeper RPG systems. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage breaks from this trend, with developers Ubisoft Bordeaux and Ubisoft Montreal aiming to deliver a stripped-down action-adventure experience in line with earlier entries in the series. It’s an approach that’s generated some excitement, particularly from old-school fans, but can you really go back again? Has Ubisoft managed to recapture the feel of those older AC titles, and even if they have, is that a worthwhile accomplishment?

Assassin’s Creed fans are waiting for the next major installment to land in the marketplace this coming month. However, if you were browsing through Steam, you might have noticed that one particular game from the franchise was pulled. That prompted plenty of speculation online of what the reason might be. Of course, some immediately go to one drastic means of the reason Ubisoft pulled the game. For instance, there were some rumors going around that Ubisoft was remaking Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, which might have been one of the reasons fans assumed was the reason behind the takedown.

Virtual photography might be a fairly young trend in gaming, but it’s one that’s got a large number of fans, to the extent that games not having a photo mode can often be quite a disappointment for audiences. One franchise that has consistently delivered solid photo modes in recent years is, of course, Assassin’s Creed, and that won’t change with its upcoming instalment.

One of the key pillars of Ubisoft is the Assassin’s Creed franchise. So we know that there are plenty of projects in the works. It wasn’t that long ago that Ubisoft revealed a few project names and some slight details of what players could expect. However, there hasn’t been much more than that. While the focus might be on a smooth launch for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, we know that there is the upcoming project Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red. Today, a new report has surfaced suggesting that the development team is further ahead in this project than what you might have expected. 

During my cover story trip to Ubisoft Bordeaux in France, my hands-on time consisted of Baghdad exploration and contracts. The former was good fun – Baghdad feels almost like a 2023 spiritual reimagining of Jerusalem in 2007’s Assassin’s Creed, with plenty of rooftops and parkour paths to hit from objective to objective. But the latter was the highlight of my experience. 

2023 has once again been a great year for gamers as not only AAA studios but indie developers too have brought out some amazing games. While The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom is widely regarded as the best game of 2023 so far, other games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Diablo IV, Dead Space Remake, Baldur's Gate 3 and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty have made it a year to remember. However, 2023 isn't over and there are still some highly anticipated games releasing in the coming months.

When Ubisoft revealed Assassin’s Creed Mirage last September, it also announced that Basim Ibn Is’haq, the master assassin who brought Eivor into the Hidden Ones order in 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, was returning. This time, however, he would the playable protagonist. His journey in Mirage takes him from street thief to Hidden Ones order initiate and eventually to the master assassin we see in Valhalla. 

The folks over at Ubisoft are gearing up to release Assassin’s Creed Mirage. We know the game is coming out in the following month. However, we’re just now learning that Assassin’s Creed Mirage was initially supposed to be DLC. With Ubisoft Bordeaux working on the title, their initial pitch was to see a DLC release for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that would take players back to the Middle East. However, that pitch only lasted a few weeks before things shifted in a far bigger way.

Ubisoft revealed Assassin’s Creed Mirage last September as part of a special stream celebrating the series’ 15th anniversary. Now, one year later, and a little over one month before the game hits PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, it’s getting the Game Informer spotlight on our latest cover! We traveled to France to speak with Ubisoft Bordeaux, a relatively new studio in the worldwide company’s massive stable of studios. After opening its doors in 2017, Ubisoft Bordeaux has worked mainly as a support studio to others in the Ubisoft umbrella. But after leading development on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Wrath of the Druids DLC, the team was given a chance to create a full game.

As promised, Ubisoft shared a new trailer for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a return to the classic stealth gameplay of old-school titles developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux. It sees Basim, the protagonist, venturing through Baghdad in the ninth century, taking down various targets en route to assassinating the Order of the Ancients’ members.

After a long period of rumors followed by an official announcement, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is finally nearing launch. Ubisoft’s next installment takes place in 9th-century Baghdad, with Basim Ibn Ishaq taking center stage. Mirage is said to return to the Assassin’s Creed series roots, embracing stealth and parkour.

The Assassin's Creed series has taken us far and wide in telling the story of the ongoing conflict between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar, and with such a geographical and historical scope Ubisoft also has a duty to accurately and respectfully depict the various cultures seen in the series.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a stealth-action adventure that draws inspiration from the series' earlier years before it leaped into the open world of massive, hundred-hour action-RPGs with Odyssey and Valhalla.

There’s quite a large fanbase for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. We know that we’ll be getting a thrilling new installment for the IP this October. Players that are eager to jump into Assassin’s Creed Mirage might be keen on this latest trailer from Ubisoft. The developers offered a new video highlighting the upcoming game and how they were able to recreate Baghdad. Just as before, this upcoming installment is focused on ensuring players have an authentic location and environment to explore.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is probably the only stealth game I’ve really ever looked forward to, and it has a lot to do with nostalgia. I grew up playing the Assassin’s Creed series, as many other gamers did, and every new entry feels like a step back into my childhood. It looks like I’ll get to check the new entry out for myself sooner than I previously expected, as Ubisoft has just announced a new release date for Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Assassin’s Creed fans have had a few releases lately that commanded a lot of time to play through. This might have been a joy for some, but others might find these games becoming too cumbersome. Going forward, we know that the next major release from the team at Ubisoft has decided to go back into the franchise roots, and that means dialing things back. We already knew that this game would be significantly shorter than the later open-world RPG installments of the franchise. But today, we’re finding out about the latest playtimes for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. 

Assassin’s Creed Mirage takes on average 20-23 hours to complete, Ubisoft has said.

In June, Ubisoft described the map size of Assassin's Creed Mirage as being closer to that of Constantinople in Revelations or Paris in Unity, rather than the sprawling multi-nation maps of more recent Assassin's Creed games. Now, in an interview with French YouTuber Julien Chièze, lead producer Fabian Salomon has said that we'll be able to roll credits on Mirage in 20 to 30 hours (thanks to PCGamesN for the translation).

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is going back to the series’ roots with an emphasis on stealthy stabbing and a leaner historical setting to explore. That smaller world is thankfully reflected in the game’s length, as Mirage will be around five times shorter than the last mammoth entry in the series, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

This is undoubtedly great news for those of us that look at the October 2023 videogame release schedule and start to sweat, with the stealth game coming in much shorter than previous RPG entries in the series. While we’re all excited about Assassin’s Creed Mirage itself, the exact timing of the Assassin’s Creed Mirage release date is in quite a busy period.

In fact, the fact that it’s meant to be a much shorter and more condensed experience is part of why series fans have been looking forward to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage so keenly.
