Does Sony have a long-term software strategy? | Opinion

In all the furore over Microsoft's record-breaking acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it's almost been possible to forget that Sony recently had a major acquisition of its own – a far cry from the scale of the Activision deal, certainly, and not even a match for the price tag of Microsoft's earlier Zenimax acquisition, but Sony's $3.6 billion buyout of Bungie was a big step for the company nonetheless.

Interest in adapting video game properties has been growing for a few years, with niche titles like Disco Elysium being scooped up and imminent projects like a Fallout TV show about to land, but the Pedro Pascal/Bella Ramsey-helmed series seems to be sparking a shift at the executive level.

Aperture Desk Job continues the story of business mega-bastard Cave Johnson absolutely perfectly

The characters in what we might term the Aperture Cinematic Universe are a memorable bunch (as I have said before). Though GLaDOS rightfully tops the list another, introduced in 2011's sequel spectacular Portal 2, became an instant favourite. Voiced by J.K. Simmons, doing a turn adjacent to his J. J. Jameson from Spider-Man, Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science (which used to primarily make shower curtains before it evolved into being a death trap puzzle company), and he made an instant impression. And though Aperture Desk Job is nominally a tech demo for the Steam Deck, it also expands the Cave Johnson lore in a very satisfying way. Spoilers beyond for Aperture Desk Job, and Portal 2 if you haven't played it.

Don't expect a Red Dead Redemption movie anytime soon: Take-Two boss says the film industry is 'a really hard business' and he's not looking to rush into it

There was a time, not all that long ago, when movies based on videogames were surefire losers. The reasons varied, but the bottom line was the same: It just never worked out. In more recent times, though, that situation has turned around dramatically: The Super Mario Bros. Apple Has Admitted A Harsh Reality That May Negatively Affect Its Business; The U.S. Smartphone Market Has Been In A Decline For A While

Apple’s Q3 2023 earnings call reported that its iPhone division generated $39.67 billion for the three-month period, but that amount was 2 percent lower compared to the same quarter a year ago. While that is still an abnormally large chunk of change, it represents a trend that even the technology giant has noticed and has no choice but to admit; the U.S. smartphone market has been in decline, and it has been this way for a while. Naturally, this will prompt the firm to reduce its dependency on its biggest cash cow, but that is easier said than done.

Having spent a few hours in the internal playtest, followed by the ongoing closed beta, I must say that I'm truly impressed with how streamlined this sequel is shaping up to be.
