Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s hit comic series by studio Science Saru, premiered on Netflix last friday. Produced and written by O’Malley and co-creator BenDavid Grabinski, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off diverges significantly from the source material, morphing into an adaptation that at once functions as both a sequel and a remake of O’Malley’s original comic.

OpenAI’s board of directions recently made the decision to remove Sam Altman as CEO, and though there has been a power struggle to reinstate him back to his original position, the final verdict will remain unchanged. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, was said to be the company’s interim CEO, but now, a former Twitch Chief Executive will take that position.

In a shocking turn of events, Sam Altman has been fired from his position as the chief executive officer (CEO) of OpenAI, as per an announcement by the company today, November 18. The reason behind laying him off was given as not being “consistently candid in his communications with the board”. As per the announcement, the decision was taken after a deliberative review process, however, the board found that it had lost confidence in him to lead the company. After the news of Altman being let go surfaced, president and cofounder of the company Greg Brockman has also resigned from his position. Altman was one of the earliest backers of the company when it launched in 2015.

“Why are we doing this now?” is an understandable question to have when hearing about the new Netflix anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, or even throughout most of its first episode. There are identical lines and visual jokes, and with the entire star-studded cast of the movie back in voice roles, it seems like the show is setting up to be a pretty faithful (but admittedly stylish) retread of Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult classic.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off gives the beloved story the anime treatment in a fun, multiverse-bending eight-part series. Reuniting all of the voice cast from Edgar Wright’s 2010 film adaptation, the Netflix show is created by comic book creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, and picks up in a very familiar place with Scott Pilgrim. Indeed, we begin with the bass guitarist for Sex Bob-Omb meeting the woman of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and finding out about her league of evil exes.
