OpenAI’s board of directions recently made the decision to remove Sam Altman as CEO, and though there has been a power struggle to reinstate him back to his original position, the final verdict will remain unchanged. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, was said to be the company’s interim CEO, but now, a former Twitch Chief Executive will take that position.
A total of three CEOs have been changed at OpenAI in three days, with new information stating that co-founder and board director Ilya Sutskever internally announced the appointment of the executive. Altman’s removal by the board resulted from the OpenAI founder apparently not being candid in his communications, and they no longer felt that he could pursue his goals responsibly.
Altman had also returned to the OpenAI office the previous morning, stating that it would be the first and last time that he wore a badge, hinting that the former CEO would either return as the company’s head or he would not be allowed to set foot in the building. Based on the appointment of Shear, we will likely no longer hear from Altman, but that does not mean he will not provide his followers with routine updates on X.
Ok, I am back for a few hours to update you since this idiocy at @OpenAI is pretty epic. Thus, let me tell you what’s what: The negotiations with @sama were ongoing and there was a noon PT deadline today when @ilyasut and his side asked until 5 pm. That’s when things went wacky.

Shortly after removing Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI, it was revealed that several key members, such as co-founder Greg Brockman, who was earlier removed as the chairman of the board, along with a few senior researchers, announced their resignations, signaling that they were supporting their former boss. Also, announcing Shear as the interim CEO of a high-profile AI company would have taken a ton of people by surprise, especially when he left Twitch in March earlier this year after serving that role for 16 years.
He left his seat before a series of layoffs happened in October, in which several jobs were slashed. It is unclear how Shear will materialize the new vision of OpenAI, but under Altman’s command, the company’s ChatGPT chatbot rose in popularity exponentially, reaching 100 million weekly users, making it one of the fastest-growing services of all time.

In a recent turn of events, Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, has reclaimed his position as the CEO of OpenAI after a tumultuous episode involving his shocking initial dismissal and subsequent reinstatement. The lingering question that has stayed in many people's minds is the reason behind this unexpected sequence of events. During an interview with The Verge, Altman addressed this query and more. While refraining from disclosing the initial cause of his dismissal, he expressed his joy at rejoining the company. Altman emphasised that the matter is still under investigation, urging that such questions should be directed to the OpenAI board rather than himself.
OpenAI has been through a lot of dramatic changes over these past few weeks with the board members firing the company CEO Sam Altman. It's been quite a week for ChatGPT-maker OpenAI — and co-founder Sam Altman.
Unlike Google, Facebook and other tech giants, the company behind ChatGPT was not created to be a business. It was set up as a nonprofit by founders who hoped that it wouldn't be beholden to commercial interests.

The OpenAI saga appears to be coming to a conclusion with one final twist, as OpenAI has just announced that Sam Altman will be returning to the company as the CEO. Alongside, he will also get a new board to work with. This means that he will not be joining Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to lead his AI research team, as announced by him earlier. The move comes after reports of mass resignation came from within the company with as many as 500 employees demanding Altman be reinstated. This would also mean that the tenure of interim CEO Emmett Shear comes to an end. It is not clear whether Greg Brockman will join the CEO to return to OpenAI.
Sam Altman and members of the OpenAI board have opened negotiations aimed at a possible return of the ousted co-founder and chief executive officer to the artificial intelligence company, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

Following a surprise ouster, OpenAI co-founder and former CEO Sam Altman joined Microsoft as the head of artificial intelligence research along with the ChatGPT maker's former President Greg Brockman and other staff. The developments come less than a year after OpenAI kicked off the generative AI frenzy with the launch of viral chatbot ChatGPT and bagged Microsoft as an investor, among other big names.
Following the removal of Sam Altman as the OpenAI CEO, the path to pick the right candidate to fill the position was not easy for the board members and they looked to be in an unseemly rush. Soon after the firing, Mira Murati joined as the interim CEO, however, after the news of Altman joining Microsoft was announced, the employees, including Murati, wanted to reinstate Sam Altman and they threatened mass resignations from the company. But to everyone's shock, he refused to come back unless the OpenAI board of directors were sacked.
It is day 5 of the OpenAI saga, and it is still delivering shocking twists and turns. When everyone thought Sam Altman, the ousted CEO of OpenAI, would join Microsoft and lead their AI division, CEO Satya Nadella gave cryptic interviews suggesting he wasn't sure where Altman would end up. Sprinkle in Ilya Sutskever's post expressing regret over participation in the board's actions and the threats of mass resignation from more than 500 employees of OpenAI, and you have a tale that will be remembered in Silicon Valley for decades to come.
