Baldur’s Gate 3 had a huge night at The Game Awards 2023, winning Game of the Year and then just launching the game on Xbox Series X|S. Surprise!
The Game Awards 2023 are in the bag, and while most people are no doubt talking about all the new trailers, there were, in fact, actual awards handed out! As many expected, Baldur’s Gate 3 walked away the big winner, nabbing Game of the Year and five other trophies, including Best RPG, Best Performance, and the Players’ Voice award. There were times when it seemed like Alan Wake 2 could take GOTY of the year, as it grabbed three awards in major artistic categories, including Best Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. Beyond those two games, most of the awards were rather spread out, with major games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy XVI, Street Fighter 6, and Armored Core VI only receiving one trophy apiece.
For a while, it seemed like Xbox owners weren’t going to be able to play Baldur’s Gate 3 this year, but eventually, Larian Studios announced the game would arrive on Xbox Series X/S this December after Microsoft gave in and allowed them to cut splitscreen co-op from the Series S version. That said, we didn’t have an exact release date. Well, tonight at The Game Awards, the Baldur’s Gate 3 cleaned up, winning Game of the Year and... it was also quietly released on Xbox without the expected big flashy announcement.
Baldur's Gate III took home the top honour at The Game Awards 2023, held early Friday in Los Angeles, besting its lead competitor Alan Wake II. The Dungeons & Dragons-based sprawling RPG, which was strongly revered by both fans and critics alike, bagged six trophies, including Best Community Support and Best Performance. The latter was collected by Neil Newbon, who played Astarion, the silver-haired vampire spawn, holding our attention with his melodramatic persona and the occasional high-pitched screeches. Meanwhile, Remedy's Alan Wake 2 won four awards across some of the most important categories, with co-directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley emerging as the best game directors of the year, alongside a writing/ narrative nod.
After winning big at The Game Awards 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios is now available on Xbox Series X/S. Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty popular, it turns out. So popular that more collective human time has been spent chatting up hot vampires, shagging bears and being turned into sentient cheese than human civilisation has existed for.
After announcing that over 1.3 million players have completed Baldur’s Gate 3 since launch, Larian Studios has released several new stats for the acclaimed role-playing game. It reaffirmed Paladin as the most popular class, Gale as the most popular companion and Shadowheart as the top love interest (followed by Karlach and Lae’zel).
With how massive Baldur’s Gate 3 is, it’s incredible to see some of the stats from Larian Studios, like players spending over 8100 years in the Character Creator. However, thanks to Patch 5 dropping last week and adding the punishing new Honour Mode, there are even crazier numbers to glean, like 158,000 playthroughs started and over 34,000 players dying in the new difficulty.
More than 1.3 million people have playedand completed Baldur’s Gate 3, according to developer Larian Studios. The majority of those players — 1.24 million, actually — got transformed into a sentient wheel of cheese at some point during their playthrough. That’s a lot of bouncing wheels of cheese! Baldur’s Gate 3 was released on Windows PC and Mac on Aug. 3, and Larian’s latest statistics tell the story of how many people played the wildly popular role-playing game set in Dungeons & Dragon’s fantasy world.
Baldur’s Gate 3 received its Patch 5 update this week, adding a host of new features including the grueling endurance run called Honour Mode. Today, Larian Studios shared how many have cleared the challenge thus far, and it’s quite humbling.
The Resonance Stone is a strange, spider-like object available in. It is a round, purple stone on a pedestal with pointed legs and a dragon's face. The Resonance Stone improves the mood of all characters within a 9-meter/30 feet radius. Specifically, they get the Steeped in Bliss status, which has both boons and consequences.
Thanks to her healing magic, Shadowheart is tasked with keeping the party alive in Baldur’s Gate 3. These are the best Feats for Shadowheart to select in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Gortash is, first and foremost, a politician in Baldur’s Gate 3. When you find him at the Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, he has a deal for you: work with him to acquire the Netherstone from Orin and control the Elderbrain together.
It’s hard to understate just how massive Baldur’s Gate 3 became post-launch. Larian’s RPG garnered a lot of fans, who became infatuated with the world, story, and especially its characters. Now, in Patch 5, BG3 solidifies a particular fan-favorite character as a part of the journey.
The long-awaited new patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 has finally arrived. Patch 5 makes a handful of bug fixes, design additions — including, erm, dick physics that make for some very realistic naked movement — and also adds in substantial companion character epilogues. And in one companion’s epilogue, Larian Studios cheekily canonized a fan-favorite character that came from a Dungeons and Dragons actual play between the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast. That’s right: Bing Bong the Imp is now officially canon.
Gamers should be used to updating and patching their games occasionally, but the real trick is having to do it with games that need a massive amount of storage just to initiate the update/patch. An excellent example of this is coming with Baldur’s Gate 3. The beloved title has slowly been patched up, with new content and fixes added over time, as Larian Studios has been listening to fan thoughts and complaints about the game ever since launch. But “Patch 5” is the biggest of the bunch, as it will be a whopping 30 GB to get installed!

The new patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 is a big one — big enough that Larian Studios says you might want to uninstall and reinstall the game, because downloading the update requires a huge chunk of storage space. Patch 5 for Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of new additions, though, including playable epilogues with “some of the most complex writing in the game thus far,” the option to play “a more realistic D&D experience,” and a brand-new difficulty option that’s anti-save scumming.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has taken an exciting leap forward with the recent unleashing of a 30 GB Patch. It’s a gargantuan update stuffed with meaningful content and silly little nods that I’m surprised it’s not DLC. It certainly weighs the part.
The massive Patch 5 is now available for Baldur’s Gate 3, bringing a new playable Epilogue with over 3700 new dialogues and cinematics. It also adds modes like Honour and Custom, performance improvements and much more also available. Out of nowhere, Larian Studios invited all of us to Withers’ Epilogue Party Extravaganza which is coming in Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5. If you’re confused about what this party is, you’ve come to the right place.
Choosing your party before venturing forth is a fundamental aspect of playing an RPG, but that doesn’t make picking favorites any less excruciating in Baldur’s Gate 3. What if you like more characters than the game lets you play with? What if you want to see what everyone has to say? What if you’re role-playing a non-hierarchical band of polyamorous adventurers? Apparently, lots of people are having this dilemma — which might explain why Party Limit Begone is one of the most popular PC mods for Larian Studios’ hit game.
Lady Esther's request in may seem like a simple side task, but its end result can have resounding consequences. It's no exaggeration to say that almost every choice matters in — from the slightest difference in dialogue to perilous risks of life and limb, almost everything the party does will come back around in one way or another. That's why it's always important to weigh the options carefully, especially when a character makes a particularly objectionable and gross-sounding request.
To find the Nightsong in, players must embark on a long side quest that stretches from Act 1 to Act 3. Although it initially appears to be a short fetch quest, finding the Nightsong is surprisingly challenging. This side quest ties into the main plot of, is closely linked to Shadowheart’s companion quest, and even involves choices that can affect the game’s ending.
Yurgir may not be the most unambiguously good character in , but the choice over whether to kill him can still cause internal conflict. Almost every choice matters in, from the most minor selection of wording to decisions between life and death. Navigating a situation carefully can often lead to interesting rewards, but the game also has no shortage of consequences, and it's often the most minor ones that come back to bite the party later in the campaign.
If you were playing Baldur’s Gate 3 during Act 3 and realized it was running pretty slow, it was apparently due to the theft and violence you performed earlier in the game.

’s Dark Urge Origin is unique to the other Origin characters as it allows more freedom while still playing an interesting fixed backstory. Race and class can be changed to suit the particular playthrough; however, the Dark Urge's background provides a fantastic connection to the main plot of. Certain classes and subclass, though, are a better fit for roleplaying such a complicated character.
It’s possible (though incredibly difficult) to complete Baldur’s Gate 3 with a single character. Some classes for a Solo Challenge run though, are much better than others at getting the job done.
Paladins have some of the most interesting class features in thanks to the oaths that play a central role in defining them. Although the idea of upholding oaths comes from the implementation of paladins in the tabletop experience, developer Larian Studios has tweaked the rules for the paladin to fit better with video game mechanics. These changes are focused in particular on creating fun consequences for keeping or breaking the sacred oaths of a paladin.
You won’t find Baldur’s Gate 3 on sale this Black Friday. And yet, we believe it’s still one of the best video game deals this holiday season. Across the Polygon team, we’ve collectively put hundreds — if not thousands — of hours into the CRPG. Considering the current bleak forecast for big video game releases in 2024, we expect to invest a few thousand more.
is a game built on choices, some simple and some more complicated, but all impacting the narrative to at least some degree. However, one such choice early on is tripping some players up, and the result is a crucial area being completely missed. Given that this area is important to a key companion's personal quest, missing out on it can have repercussions further down the line in .
Clerics are one of the most versatile support classes in , capable of providing healing alongside buffs. When creating a cleric, one of the first steps is to choose their subclass, known as their domain, which will determine what spells and abilities the character will have. With seven subclasses currently available, it is important to know which are the strongest and have the most to offer to make the most of any playthrough.
